School Secretary/Administrative Personnel Jobs...
for either in a Catholic or Public school (preferably in Queens)?
I have an Associates Degree and have been a legal secretary for 11 years and I wanted to see if I could get a job in the schools, so that I would have similar days off when my son is in school and no commuting - that would be the best part!
And so, I have some questions:
What are Salaries for a Catholic School secretary or administrative personnel?
What are Salaries for a Public School secretary or administrative personnel?
Are there any special skills that are needed for a school secretary or administrative personnel?
Would I have to go back to school, for more education?
How would I apply? How long is the wait list, if any? Would I have to take a test?
....even if you don't have any answers, if you can guide me in the right direction on where I can start.
Thanks very much

Re: School Secretary/Administrative Personnel Jobs...
If you go to the NYC Board of Education website, there is information on there on how you can apply to take the test for School Secretary. There is a two part test one is typing/dictation, proofreading, etc. If you pass that part, then you have to take an interview test where they ask you questions about what you would do in certain situations.
I took and passed the tests last year and got my license. I worked as a legal secretary for 10 years, and thought I'd apply in the schools.
My situation changed, so I never really looked for a job once I had my license, but several schools called me to see if I was interested in positions.
I think the salary starts off kind of low - in the mid-30s, but you can use your experience and move up on the pay scale since you have so many years of it.
Hope this helped!

Re: School Secretary/Administrative Personnel Jobs...
Ha-this is the job I'm trying for!
You first have to go downtown to get fingerprinted. then yo uhave to send in an application for a school secretary position. they send you back a test date. since u have a degree, u will only have to take part II of the test, which 90% of ppl fail the first time around, lol.
its not a hard test persay, but if ur not expecting waht is actually ON the test, it could be hard. there are 3 parts, u can FM me for more info on them.
after u pass the test, u have to go to schools and submit ur resume.
i think u start off with 38k a year.

If you have all that experience working in a law firm, the test should be a breeze for you.
Also, just keep in mind that they only give the test in the spring and in the fall and there is a deadline for submitting your application.

This is true! But you cannot make ANY mistakes on the test, even with all that experience, people DO fail.
There are three parts,
1.transcription-they transcribe a letter to you at 70 wpm. (i dunno about yuou, but i never took shorthand or was given it in school-they did away with that wayy before i started)
2. typing a one page memo EXACTLY how its written
3. they give u a letter written by someone and have to correct it (grammar, correct business letter style, etc)
all in all, is not hard. its just the matter of making stupid little mistakes
for me, i failed the first time-bc i had NO clue how the test would be. and the transcription is 20 pts, and i lost 20 pts automatically bc ive never done that before and it was hard! lol
but i just took the test again 2 weeks ago and practiced a little bit w/the transcription part. u just have to know when to not tire out ur hand so much!

Re: School Secretary/Administrative Personnel Jobs...
You're right. If you never took shorthand it's going to be kind of hard unless you can write really fast. I happened to have taken shorthand when I went to school for a Legal Secretarial degree (even though I hardly ever used it at work). But it's a good thing to know anyway.
I think if you get the dictation part, then it should be pretty easy.

Thanks ladies
I had it in school too, but I only did a 70wpm once (I couldn't keep up) and I don't use it at work.
Since you haven't use it, were you able to do the shorthand on the school test?

I'm answering this, lol. I've NEVER used shortand, by the time I went to school-it was completely out!
The first time I took the test, I completely bombed that part-bc I didnt really practice.
This second time around, I practiced for a few days before the test to make my hands get used to it. I would watch a tv show and write down as they were writing.
The trick is....they first give u a "practice" shortand. Dont go too crazy on that, or else your hand will get too tired. (Thats what I did wrong the last time!!)
Then they dictate 2 letters at 70 WPM-and you choose the one where you think you did the best. I pretty much got every word on the 2nd letter dictated, so I was happy. (and this is from someone who never did this before!!)
Are you a pretty good typer?

I was able to get it because I kind of use it for myself, and if I'm able to figure out how the flow of the letter is going, then I usually have no problem. I worked for a couple of old fashioned attorneys who would dictate to me once in a while, so it wasn't really too bad.
I think you'll do fine though.
BTW - they do still give shorthand courses at some community colleges. I know someone who is going to Queensborough now and taking it.
