School supply question
My son is going into Kindergarten in September. At orientation they gave out the option to order and pickup the supplies when we meet the teacher. Do most parents just buy the supplies or do you do the supply kits? My dad offered to spend the money so we wouldn't have to buy them. I thought it would be fun for my son and I to go out shopping and buy them. I also have tons of extra supplies when I was a teacher, can I send them in as the year goes on to help out the teacher? Thanks so much.

School supply question
My son is going into second grade and this is the first year that we were given the option to order and have it delivered to the school. I find that so much easier. The price for his kit was really reasonable and it saved me a lot of aggravation.
Our list in Kindergarten was long and very specific... I went to a bunch of different stores to buy items on sale. It was difficult having him carry everything in as well. Unfortunately, our district won't guarantee what school you are going to until the summer so the kindergarteners still have to shop for the supplies - so I will be shopping for DS 2 (luckily I have a lot of the items from DS 1).
As for sending things in during the middle of the year - it varies. I didn't need to send anything in for my son but, certain schools do ask for extra items (crayons, pencils, etc).

Re: School supply question
We don't have that option but I wish we did. I hate having to shop for school supplies in July in order to get first pick of everything. By Sept they run out of everything.
It's so depressing thinking of school when she just finished 2 weeks prior.
I wish we had the option of just paying the school for them

School supply question
His supplies were ordered a month ago, lol. Too specific of a list and really not much more than if I went shopping. And I'm a teacher. Just order and take him shopping for a new backpack and lunch box's
Eta. One less thing to stress about this summer.

Re: School supply question
We picked up our little guys supply box for second grade about a month or two ago- although I did feel it was probably more expensive to order through the school than buying it myself, a)it was easier - a lot of times the teachers request a box of 16 crayons vs the 24 pack that might be on sale, or 5 ounce glue stick, not 10. B)it's also a fundraiser for the school. I don't buy any of the other stuff they sell so I figured eh just take my money and leave me alone lol

Re: School supply question
Thank you all. At first I was thinking how nice it would be to pick out his school supplies together and get him excited for school but now Im rethinking it. I see how crazy it can sometimes get with parents searching for the correct items. I think it will be less stressful if I just order them and then pick them up. One less thing to worry about over the summer.

Re: School supply question
I hear a lot of parents say they want their child to have the experience of going shopping for school supplies. I don't know, when I was in school, I hated shopping for school supplies. We always went like 2 weeks before school started, so it was just a reminder that summer vacation was almost over. I would have loved to just have my parents order them through the school. My boys are going into 1st grade & Pre-k, in the same Catholic school. I ordered both of their supply kits through the school. They were uniforms so no big back to school clothes shopping either. It's the greatest.

We have the option to order supplies, but I have always loved shopping for school supplies so we get our own.

School supply question
I buy them myself...our kits are $45 and I get all of my supplies for half that (young elementary). Target had most common items for less than $1 last year (markers, crayons, pencil boxes, etc) We can go in to meet our teacher prior to school starting, so we bring the supplies then.

I'm pretty sure they're ok with more crayons/glue! I'd get the sale item and not think twice.

I feel the same. I have twins so I have to do this crap twice. I wish I could pay and have the school do it. Not to mention they needed specific items, liked a red, blue, and green folder with pockets (3 separate folders). I had the worst time finding the stupid green one 2 weeks before school. I was ripping my hair out. Either they had designs or didn't have 2 pockets (it said must be solid color and with 2 pockets). Finally made my dad drive all over (he's retired) to find it for me. Would've gladly paid to have this over!

Re: School supply question
I ordered through the school because it was easier and everyhingnthey wanted was specific down to the color. If we could have picked out cute design stuff I would have done it myself but this seemed easier. I'll let my dd pick a backpack and lunch box

Re: School supply question
I always buy the kit.
A) It's easier, instead of having to chase down specific brands, colors, package sizes, etc. of the things the teachers want.
B) It's a PTA fundraiser, so I like to support the school/PTA.
It's not like when we were little and you got to pick out your own colors and designs for folders and your trapper keeper and all of that. I have found that the teachers want specific colors because they use them for specific things (red notebook for math, blue notebook for daily journal, etc.). Plus, my DS doesn't really care about that stuff.
It's still fun to pick out things like his backpack, back to school clothes/sneakers, etc.

School supply question
I bought the kit when my son was going into K, but haven't since then. I find it much, much cheaper to go to Target in early August and buy everything myself.

I wonder when the Target back to school sale will be. it is usually a mess but I like picking it myself and I find it to be much cheaper.

Thats what I was thinking. I ordered it this year but Ill see for the following years. I have 3 kids going into elementary school one right after the other. It will get really expensive as the years go by.

See I find that to be such bullshitt that they make you drive to the end of the earth to find a specific color. So far we haven't had color requirements ,thank God. I am not one to run around.

School supply question
We just got our supply list at prek orientation. I wish we could just buy a box because it's a very long, detailed list. I'm just buying things as I see them or find them on target/Amazon. I used to love school supply shopping but nothing on this list is fun.

I wish we had the option to buy the kit! I'm dreading going from store to store trying to find everything on the list.... ugh. And like someone mentioned, it's not even fun anymore... god forbid kids get to show off their personalities on their folders lol.

School supply question
I'm was on the PTA Board this past year and just finished my last duty by counting up the school supply orders and ordering them from the company! But, I didn't buy them. My daughter likes to pick out her own stuff. And, it's much cheaper to go to Walmart.

Re: School supply question
We have the option to purchase the school supply list through the PTA, but I could buy 4 of them for the price they offer it as. I prefer to head to Walmart and buy them - takes 10 mins and I save a bundle!

School supply question
We have the fundraiser at school and it is very convenient. All the boxes are on the kids desk on the first day of school with a sheet of labels and the teacher has them label everything the first day. A lot of my friends have their kids just pick out one "special" folder that they use at the homework folder so it makes the kids feel more personalized. I unfortunately can not participate because my daughter is in special ed and they never finalize who are the teachers until July so it's after the cut off date.

My son is going into 1st. There is a chance he will not be in the same school next year. They want $68 for the supply box from school. I can get everything on the list way cheaper than $68. And if his school changes (I won't know til end of August) I will probably need different supplies. I like buying this stuff and I always stock up on this type of stuff and use it all year long.
