My kids start a summer “enrichment” next week with no masks. Hoping they continue the regular school year like that. They had summer school all summer with no masks and not a single outbreak.

My home district had a pretty normal year last year despite masks and distancing. My son luckily never had to quarantine. Kids were full time. My son will be wearing a mask if it's optional. So whatever they decide, I'm okay with it long as it's full time school. I work for the NYC DOE and well that's another story. I took last year off and wish I could again this year.

Haven’t heard yet but my district was one of the districts that sent multiple letters to New York State saying that the decision should be made locally about masks. To me they seem to want to make it optional but we will see. What they just did was basically shift the constant letter/protest to a local level now and the school districts will now be the ones that are harassed by the constant protest and be to blame which whatever decision they make.

I would just like the option to be mine. Last year my kids would get “yelled” at if their mask wasn’t on correctly. They are small children who sometimes need a break! I would feel so much better if I sent them in with a mask to wear “as needed”. I have no problem sending them in wearing one if things in our school started getting bad but it would be nice if they took it off while at their desk alone and didn’t get in trouble. The condition these masks would come home in were disgusting. I found it absurd that they would have to wear it while at their desk with the next child three feet from them. They would try to sneak it below their nose during those times and literally get yelled at. I think that’s why I’m so against the mandatory masks in school.

Although I was hoping no masks, I’m thinking masks will be required but I do hope my district loses those plastic shields. Many districts did away with them mid year last year with no issue.
My friend who lives in Florida, posted pics of her kids meet the teacher day yesterday, no masks on anyone, desks were grouped together in sets of 2-3 kids.

Didn't the FL Govemor ban masks in schools?

He banned them mandating it. I think he said it would be the parent's choice.
I don't' think he banned them as in, you are not allowed to wear a mask in a school if you want to.

U’re right Nell. He banned any school from mandating them. Masks will be optional.

Being that the kids will be quarantined and miss 2 weeks of school if they are exposed and in classrooms with no masks, I'm okay with masking. Actually my daughter doesn't mind the mask at all. Last year we have hybrid, remote schedules. If you weren't in school you could stream in. Hybrid and remote are not options this year, so yeah..I would rather mask and be in school

But some districts are still mandating the wearing of masks. My coworker actually knew before me that her sons school was requiring masks. She’s in the Miami area.

He’s threatening this but it is not official. It’s disgusting that he’s putting schools in this position.

Masks work. My DH was in a car with his coworker on Saturday for hours. They also were in close contact on Sunday. His coworker tested positive on Monday. They both double masked and my DH was negative for Covid. My husband is vaccinated which I’m sure sure helped in addition to the mask.

Our school district is requiring masks indoors for all staff and students regardless of vaccination status. Masks are not required outdoors. They will not be social distancing in the classroom in most cases due to space limitations. I am fine with the indoor masking since there is not going to be a remote option if a child gets quarantined- it will count as an absence.

They’re gonna count quarantines as absences? Wow! Do quarantines still last 15 days? Would that apply only to a symptomatic person or exposures too?

How can they mark that an absence if your child was forced to quarantine? I would be fighting that. No way in hell is my child getting marked absent because the school is making them quarantined because a positive in class.
Especially my district when they quarantine a whole entire class no matter if a child was even close to the person that tested positive Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

But I'm sure it's an excused absence.
The only absences that are issues with the district are unexcused absences.
Like pulling your child for vacations etc
Being quarantined due to exposure has got to be an excused absence and as far as I know, a excused absence means pretty much nothing

I guess if it’s excused I would be ok with it. I do pull my children for vacations so I wouldn’t want to use up those days.

What exactly constitutes excuses absences anyway because on my son‘s report card even though I sent doctor notes in for pulling him from he still had an awful lot of marked absences on the report card.

The absences should be makred as Excused or Unexcused.
If they are sick, with a note, they will still be marked as an absence but it should say excused or be indicated excused somehow.
Unexcused are vacations, or pulling them out for anything other than illness, death in the family, doctor appt etc

Our district just said they are opening with three feet of distancing. They are forming a committee to discuss masks,

There is no remote option this year but the district will support those with quarantined do remote learning.

after a certain amount of time if your child is not in school they will not advance to the next grade no matter how well they do on tests. There is no way I would stand for this. They will not be able to learn if there is no virtual class. This sounds like a complete and total disaster in the making.

Children can still advance even with excessive absences. Excessive absences can lead to a pre-pins meeting due to educational neglect. If the absences are due to a covid exposure, admin should not flag it for such a meeting.

Schools honestly have no idea what they are doing. Directive really should come from the state. Virtual learning was a shitshow last year and many students took advantage of the system at least at the secondary level.

Re: Schools

Our governor never lifted the mask requirement for schools. He just gave towns and cities the authority to have universal mask requirements in all public places so I don’t see masks going away anytime soon. I don’t have a problem with masks in schools especially for those who are too young to be vaccinated. I just want my kids to be in school FT. My oldest was hybrid for most of last year and he struggled with it. Our district mentioned today that there may be remote options for classes that are quarantined, but it wasn’t clear if that will be an option for individual quarantines as well.
