Shocked at making it optional. I would think they would all follow the cdc recommendation

Our district is looking into a variety of metrics but has not made their final decision.
Since the number of cases in our county is much lower than the number of cases in Massapequa - I think there is a chance of optional masking to start the school year still.

I am surprised they even announced it. You’re gonna have to really pissed off parents of the state comes back and says they can’t do that so why even bother saying it until you know what the state is going to do. We are going to have a new governor in what a week and who the hell knows what rules she’s gonna impose.

Why are schools even wasting time and resources on this? We all know the new governor is going to decide the week of school masks must be worn. And probably throw in some more unfunded mandates that require schools to scramble and spend tons more money.

I wondered if the Plainedge decision was a strategic move, but I’m not familiar with them.
I know Board of Ed members and supers are feeling the heat, meetings are like bad reality shows lately, and it’s just way too much to dump on the lap of any district during this time.
My thinking was that they made this decision as sort of a stunt. As if they were really listening to their constituents, and that they are on their side… Knowing full well that the new governor could stop that plan. But at least they could say they tried. Now they can just blame the governor if she mandates differently. I could be wrong but I don’t think schools want to be angering their communities or making these calls.

lol - they definitely are like bad reality shows. I think with all of the viral videos going around - people feel that’s the way to get their point across but often times it just makes people angry.
I’m sure our district is waiting to the last possible minute because they spoke out early in June when the news slipped they were going to remove masks in schools and they had to backtrack once Cuomo said oops - not today.
Can the Governor mandate? I am unclear on that one since the emergency powers were lifted. So I wasn’t sure by her saying she couldn’t do that now was it because she wasn’t Governor or she can’t? I am sure some overarching power somewhere will say something.
As much as I would love to have kids unmasked - I’m seeing and hearing these stories of mass quarantines and masking would prevent that…
I didn’t do well teaching 4th grade and I’d have to do that again this year so I need my kids in school as much as possible.

I’m not sure about the rules of mandating but I agree about wanting kids in school. In Suffolk, it looked like the positivity rate was 5% as of today. I couldn’t remember what percentage it was when they started locking down last year. I just wish we could see into the future a bit.

You know what you make a good point. I don’t know what the governor is allowed to do and not do it the emergency powers were lifted. My district basically said they’re waiting to hear if more mandates/rules come down from New York State which to me means they’re going to wait until the new governor comes in

I think 5% was beyond yellow last year.
I was so hopeful at the end of the last school year but now I think it’s going to be horrible again.
