Schools...
Anyone hearing chatter that they are going to announce that schools will be remote for 2 weeks after the Christmas break?
I'm in NYC, and that's going around the rumor mill. We are having classes shut down for quarantine left and right. Several teachers I know (and administrators) are saying it's being discussed in the "situation room" (side note, I didn't know the NYC DOE had a legit situation room LOL)
UGHHHH...not looking forward to having my kid home for over 3 weeks!!

Ugh - I have seen it on the news for a district in Westchester as they have 18% of their student body in quarantine. I wouldn't be surprised if the city did because nothing DeBlasio does surprises me anymore...
I don't think our district has enough cases to justify going remote at this point.
ETA - I misread - after Christmas. They better not go remote... But again I wouldn't be surprised if NYC did.

LOL- yes they do have a situation room. Whenever a class closes the information has to be logged on the positive individual as well as all those that were exposed to that individual. I teach in Queens and yes- there has been chatter of remote the week of at least January 3rd, haven't heard about the week after. We have multiple cases in our school, among staff and students. There has not been any in school spread, all cases occured outside the building. However, I would not be surprised if many districts go remote the week of the 3rd. I can't imagine the amount of closed classrooms and quarantines that will result from Christmas and NYE celebrations as well as families going on vacation. Let me state- I am not saying don't get together with people, before anyone starts that. This year we are doing family night of just us for Christmas Eve and NYE but do have plans to be with extended family Christmas Day. I am just saying I understand the concern.

Re: Schools...
I have not heard anything official but I was speaking with our school's principal yesterday and she told me that, as of yesterday, they had 300 kids quarantining in the district. She said since Thanksgiving, they are averaging 10-12 quarantines per day in our elementary school. For reference, there are about 500 kids in our elementary school and I believe roughly 4000 in the district.
She told me they are very concerned about what January will bring because the numbers this time last year were nowhere near that. She said on yesterday's date last year, they had 25 kids district wide quarantining so that's a tremendous difference. She didn't say anything about a 2 week closure (quite frankly I don't think that helps anything because it's just an extended 2 weeks of vacation really), but I am betting it is not off the table.

Wow - that's a lot.
What is your school's quarantine policy? We've had cases daily and we're nowhere near that. Mainly the only kids sent into quarantine are from outside of school activities or those on the bus as everyone is distanced and masked 3ft during the day and they are 6ft apart at lunch (they eat on the floor of the gym or the hallway though so they are bound to pick up some other nasty illness).

I am on Long Island. I haven’t heard anything but then again we don’t have kids quarantine by the 100’s. They only quarantine the kid that tests positive in the class, Being that the kids wear a mask all day and are three ft apart they stopped quarantine classes. Haven’t has a school shut down since school started

yes i heard it too and i work in the DOE- I hope they do it, it would be very smart honestly. Forced quarantine for a week or two following the holiday break is a good way to ensure the kids don't come to school and spread covid IMO

Except nobody will quarantine. The kids will be getting together with their friends, hanging out, having sleep overs and probably have to be watched by other people because not everyone can sit home because the schools decide to close- parents do have to go to work. So yeah, that wont' do shit. Nobody is "quarantining" healthy kids

Totally agree 1000000%. Shutting down schools after break will do absolutely nothing! Kids will be getting together regardless.

I don't think a shut down is necesarily a good idea, but I do think it's spreading in schools. Which is weird if they're all following the guidelines- masked and distancing. However, my daughter told me today (she's in middle school) that lots of kids take their masks off, and teachers tell them to put them back on and most don't comply. Or they'll put it back on and then remove it when teacher isn't looking. Her BFF was told to quarantine yesterday..they are not in classes together, but do spend recess and walk home together- those are both unmasked...so if they friend was exposed and tests positive, I guess my kid is exposed and then will have to test? I swear if Covid ruins Christmas 2021, i will scream. LOL

If they are outside I don't think you have to... You may want to but you don't have to.
Aah - in our schools our kids are good about masking when asked. The main issue is the bus as the bus driver is driving and not enforcing.
I'm getting ready for it to ruin Christmas. It's spreading like wildfire around firehouses in NYC (you know the ones with the mandate)...

This exactly. And all those activities will be unmasked and non- distanced. Great plan!

I always say they are safer IN school. Because at least at school, they are forced to wear masks (I wont' say distance because I've seen the hallways at my DD's middle school and they are PACKED- there is no distancing at all) But my child does not wear a mask at home and sees her friends indoors this whole time and I have zero restrictions on anything So yeah...
The schools closing is doing nothing more than giving everyone extra days off. Must be nice. I wish my job would shut down completely for a few weeks with no remote access to anything to "stop the spread"

Closing schools will be useless. It just prolongs the vacation. We already saw that closing schools does not stop transmission. They need to stop repeating their errors.

My district just sent a weird email saying there has been a sharp uptick in cases in the county and urging everyone to participate in the regular testing (96% already do). It ended by saying that they are prepared to go fully remote but hope it won’t come to that, which I thought was weird.
I have no idea how many quarantines they’ve had so far this year. They are very strict about masks and I think at least half of her class is vaccinated.
ETA: 1 positive in DD’s school over the past 7 days

It's essentially the same as yours. The kids that are quarantining have been exposed through life outside of school. I can't speak about the other schools in our district but she said that of all the cases in our school, none have caused another child to have to quarantine because of the social distancing and masks in school. I personally know 3 kids quarantining right now and it's because their parents tested positive. They are negative.

Yes.
It is utterly fascinating to me that teachers and school administrators possess a fear of covid not even seen among doctors, nurses and other high risk professions.

I am a teacher and nobody in my school wants to be remote. My class is remote right now and we can't return until after break. I am devestated that I am missing out on all the fun holiday things I had planned for my class. My principal, the faculty- NOBODY wants to ever go remote again. Teachers don't get to decide whether schools go remote or not. Neither does the principal. It comes from the district or the state/city.

I’m not saying every teacher or every administrator. But where I live, the district/admins/teachers seem to grasp at straws to force quarantines out of an abundance of scientifically unwarranted fear.
They’ve had 10 kids test positive in the last week, in a district of ~4,000 students total and are sending out emails hinting that they could need to go fully remote. If that isnt horseshit I don’t know what is.

Of course it’s horseshit! There are schools in other parts of the country that are operating like normal - No masks required, no distancing, no quarantines. And everyone is FINE. It is completely absurd and evil what NY is doing to children.

Agreed!!!! I hope people are paying attention to what is going on here with our new governor and respond accordingly during election time, no matter what party you affiliate yourself with. Time to put that aside and act in favor of who will move this state forward.
