Yes.

I am a teacher and nobody in my school wants to be remote. My class is remote right now and we can't return until after break. I am devestated that I am missing out on all the fun holiday things I had planned for my class. My principal, the faculty- NOBODY wants to ever go remote again. Teachers don't get to decide whether schools go remote or not. Neither does the principal. It comes from the district or the state/city.
That's so sad! I'm sure this is one of your favorite times of the year.

Of course it’s horseshit! There are schools in other parts of the country that are operating like normal - No masks required, no distancing, no quarantines. And everyone is FINE. It is completely absurd and evil what NY is doing to children.
Agreed!!!! I hope people are paying attention to what is going on here with our new governor and respond accordingly during election time, no matter what party you affiliate yourself with. Time to put that aside and act in favor of who will move this state forward.

Definitely. It's crazy how different things are elsewhere...
I think shutting down will just prolong the whole thing - it's going to spread, it's spreading quickly. Thankfully it's not that strong...

Schools...
Oh that would be awesome to use my 2022 sick/vacation time the first week of the year to stay home while my kids do virtual school.
Get out of here with this craziness. Look at other states. NORMAL. people have livelihoods that can’t be put on hold for “what if’s”.

Yet we are sad people for wanting to leave the state and live a normal life.

Schools...
My school will only go remote if there are staffing issues. There are no subs. They are pulling teachers from their duties to cover absent teachers. We were told to have our zoom links ready because at any moment we could go remote if there aren’t enough staff to supervise the buildings.
Teachers are parents too and are having to stay home with their quarantined kids. Teachers need to be tested if they have symptoms. It’s a mess. Plus people still take days off for other reasons. Like I had an MRI the other day and needed to take a half day.
I teach and pray every day we don’t go virtual.

That is definitely a real issue. Our district though has never had a sub shortage or a teacher shortage throughout the pandemic. We have been hiring like crazy. I wonder if it has to do with the rate of pay for some districts.

I teach in an excellent upstate suburb. There are no teacher subs. There are no TA subs. There are no bus driver subs either. If there are too few adults in the building, you can’t properly supervise the students. This is the issue. My district reiterates again and again we will only go remote if there is a staffing issue. A secretary covered for a class the other day because someone had to leave for an emergency.

I'm not doubting you. I agree that is a huge issue . I was just speculating on why it is issues only in some districts. But I see you're upstate so it is a total different pool of employees.

Our issue is retired teachers would always sub, but none of them want to with Covid and I don’t blame them.
We’ve always been tight with subs but the shortage is crazy. Apparently our regional BOCES sets the daily rate so districts can’t even up the pay to attract more candidates. One district in my area is cancelling bus routes daily as they have no one to drive the buses so parents need to find a way to get their kids to school.

We have the same issue with subs and bus drivers. They may have found a few more bus drivers though as routes haven’t been canceled at the same rate they were back in Sept and Oct. It’s crazy.
DS1 in MS has had some subs who were retired teachers but DS2 usually has a TA in elementary if someone is out.

Yes.
It is utterly fascinating to me that teachers and school administrators possess a fear of covid not even seen among doctors, nurses and other high risk professions.

May I ask why your class is quarantined? My son is also quarantined through the break because of the school basketball team, 1 child positive. Even though they wear masks - they consider it close contact and there’s no test out option currently to come back (my son is negative). Although there was a news article yesterday about some states using a test to stay procedure to lessen the amount of healthy children missing school. This asynchronous learning (middle school) is laughable - it’s not Google meets piped in anymore.

My niece’s class had to quarantine since the teacher tested positive. 4 or 5 kids in the class wound up positive 2-4 days later so in this case it was good that the class quarantined.

Apparently her teacher sucks at wearing a mask and it is common knowledge around the school. She is also lower elementary so she works closely with the students in small groups. Kids also remove their masks for snack. Everyone infected sat in close proximity to the teacher’s desk. My niece’s desk is closest to the teacher.

My class is quarantined because we are Kindergarten and in my school the lower grades are required to quarantine the whole class due to them being less likely to be able to strictly keep their masks on all day like the older kids. So far nobody else but the original person has tested positive. Child was last in school Tuesday, woke up sick Wednesday, tested positive Wednesday evening through a rapid test. Luckily the parents were all completely understanding and not upset about the quarantine.

Ugghh. This is why, while I don’t usually wear a mask places, when I hear people sneezing and coughing, I move away or make sure I have my mask on in places required and try and turn my back to them. I don’t want to deal with ANY sickness. Today the man in front of me said his kid had Covid and he was testing and I made sure I had my mask fully on. He was negative though but still.

WHAT?! If my DD got covid because her teacher, an ADULT, “sucks at wearing a mask” I would be irate. I’m irate for your niece and her parents!

She is irate. My other niece and my BIL have since also tested positive. My BIL has been out of commission for over a week. He’s vaccinated. He said he’s never been this sick in his entire life. So far my sister and nephew are negative.

Kids also remove their masks for snack. Everyone infected sat in close proximity to the teacher’s desk. My niece’s desk is closest to the teacher.
Sad as people think since they are vaccinated they will have less symptoms. You just never know. Hope he feels better soon as being sick, especially at holiday time sucks.

I guess if you have 2 working parents you are just shit out of luck huh? Close down schools on a whim... sure, why not? 2 years later and we are no better than we were This will literally go on forever
Yes.
It is utterly fascinating to me that teachers and school administrators possess a fear of covid not even seen among doctors, nurses and other high risk professions.

Well if he wasn’t vaccinated, it could’ve been much worse. My sister is pissed he kept putting off getting the booster because he was “too busy.”

Again how do you know that? Not trying to come at you but no one really knows that. The booster doesn’t protect you either from getting sick.

It has been proven, time and time and time again, that while the vaccine does not stop infection or spread, it does lessen the severity of symptoms. You can choose to not believe that. You can choose to keep thinking the sky is falling and the government is out to get you. You can easily look at the data from hospitals- the hospitalization rate for unvaccinated is, in fact, higer than among the vaccinated. That does not mean vaccinated people don't get seriously ill and die. It also doesn't mean that the majority of unvaccinated people will be fine- because a majority of them will be fine. But the data is all there. It must be so difficult to spend your entire life with a weird obsession over a vaccine you DIDN'T EVEN TAKE. SO WHO CARES. I don't care that people didn't get vaccinated- doesn't bother me and I don't judge your decision. However you seem to spend all your free time judging those who did get the vaccine. Worry about your own life, your own family, your own decisions. Just like you expect everyone else to do for you.

What you wrote at the bottom is exactly the problem. People are judging the unvaxed. They are not allowing them to participate in activities. People are not worrying about their own lives because they are being told what to do from the government. It is already proven that vaccinated people get less ill so that should be the end of it. It is also proven that getting the vaccine does not take away the risk of getting or transmitting Covid exactly like an unvaxxed person. The whole initial story about getting the vaccine to save those around you is false. It doesn't save anyone but yourself. Take the shot if you want, don't at your own risk. Mandating it and not allowing people to participate because of their choice is the the lack of a better word, discriminatory.
