What is the value in speculating or even worrying about what September 2022 will look like? Nobody has any answers to this question and SO much can change in the almost year until next September.
Live for today and stop stressing over a future that you have no control over. What a waste of energy.
Because some people are planning on pulling their kids if it doesn’t get better, myself included. I’m not subjecting my kids to this nonsense another year, they don’t deserve it while friends and families in other states are getting a normal education.
It's December 2021 - you're putting the cart before the horse in this case. For myself, I'm not wasting any energy on "what ifs" and speculations about the future.
To be honest, I 100% think most parents are full of $hit and when push comes to shove they aren't going to do anything drastic like pulling their kids from school or up and leave NY. Why? Because the actual reality is that most people are incapable of exclusively educating their own children AND they aren't able to just quit their jobs, sell their homes and relocate to start a new life.
FTR, my kids are having a fantastic year. Other than wearing masks, their school year has been completely normal and filled with after school activities, sports, events, socializing, moving around the building, parties in school, etc. It's NOTHING like 2020 and while every district is (of course) different in how they are handling things I do think there are many people who are up in arms mostly over nothing. People seem to just be riling each other up.
Just my two certs. Carry on with the outrage.
I'm glad it doesn't keep you up at night but it does keep me up at night as it has a major impact on my children's future. The decision by our dictator is out of my control but how I react to the decision is within my control and I have to take into account all aspects of that decision (children's emotional well being, aging parents, etc)...
Understood however, worrying about September 2022 in December 2021 is absolutely pointless. There are no answers, there is no plan and there no way to know what next fall will look like.
Worrying about a future that may or may not be simply robs you of your peace today.
I think that if someone is planning to potentially uproot their family because of a vaccine mandate it would be better to know sooner than later. From your posts on here it took years for your husband to find the right job in a location that you liked out of state. If someone wants to be set up in another state by the time school opens next year, realistically they have to start planning sooner rather than later. We are fortunate in that we already own property OOS and my husband and I both have positions that enable us to work remote, but I am assuming most families do not have those luxuries.
I wouldn't look at it as "worrying" as much as properly planning given the information that we already have right now and speculating how things will look in a short 9 months from now.
Exactly.

Re: Schools September 2022
I think that the issue is saying to someone: "Don't worry about something almost a year away" assumes that the thing you are worrying about is completely out of your control. When the thing you are "worrying" about is something that you can avoid by planning properly and making some important decisions, it's a different story. And so being that is the case with this situation, I think asking others to speculate on how they think things will look in our area in September is completely reasonable. Sometimes it's good to discuss and get other people's perspectives, etc. If it's a topic that does not concern you and you would prefer not to speculate, just move on. But don't dismiss someone's desire to have the conversation.

Maybe it’s easy for you to think this way because you are ok with how things are in school. Or you don’t mind vaccinating your children.
But for parents who have children in schools that are not doing a good job at normalizing school this is something to worry about. Or parents who will not vaccinate their children, this is something to worry about.
We have a governor who has already had health care professionals lose their livelihoods over a vaccine. She has made it very clear that she will consider a vaccine mandate. We have A mayor in NYC who is requiring vaccines. We have every right to be worried about September and to start planning so that our children will have a seamless transition into whatever decision we make. It is my job as a mother to worry about my children and their future.

My kids actually aren't vaccinated, they still have antibodies from having COVID.
NY and NJ........ VERY LITTLE difference between the two.
Stick to what you know which is VERY LITTLE about me or COVID for that matter.

Were they even checked for antibodies or do you just take it they do as I know you said you nor your kids ever got tested for covid?

The CDC recommends that anyone who is recovered from covid get vaccinated asap. Your family had covid months ago. Your children are considered unprotected.
The cdc's website says "No currently available test can reliably determine if a person is protected from infection." and then goes on to say that someone who recovers from covid is more than 2x more likely to get re-infected if they don't get vaccinated.
Also, and just for the sake of clarity, there ARE many similarities between NY and NJ. This is true. But currently there are also quite a few differences, with NY mandates being more restrictive.

This. School is pretty much normal except for wearing masks. They do holiday parties, have assemblies, work in groups, etc. my son’s school is only quarantining kids on the bus or if you eat at the same lunch table so barely anyone needs to quarantine at this point.
My kids school is completely opposite. Masks are strictly enforced, kids are threatened daily. Lunch at desks and yelled at if they move them the slightest bit. Parents can’t come past the vestibule. It’s terrible. My kids hate it. Maybe that’s why I will actually be one of those families who will move out of state.
Masks are strictly enforced at my son’s school as well but everything else is normal. I would think your best course of action currently is to attend board meetings and complain to your board members. It seems like things need to change at your local level of they are being that restrictive. Also I don’t believe most public schools are currently allowing parents in the building. I have had to have guest speakers over Zoom.

Some are but it seems most aren't. Our district doesn't unless it's after school hours (we had a winter concert last week at the HS). A neighboring district allows in 4 volunteers for PTA things (my boss went in for her holiday boutique while ours was outside).
Our kids are eating on the floor 6ft apart and strict masking but they do seem a million times happier than last year.

Parents are allowed back into school in my district. I saw a bunch of pictures of holiday parties last week in the elementary school with parents in attendance. We also had a concert last week- after hours but up to 2 people per child were allowed to attend.

My husband and I are fully vaccinated and have had our booster.
I'm waiting to vaccinate my children for two reasons, at last check they still had antibodies AND when they were sick with COVID they fared very well and recovered quickly. Like many other, I'm slightly more hesitant to vaccinate my children. It doesn't mean I won't, I'm just giving it a little more consideration before I make the decision.
As for school, if I were still on the island my kids would be having the same exact experience in my former district as they are here. I still talk to all of my friends in 3V and their kids are having a normal year so far too.

In our school the class holiday parties allowed one parent per child to attend. We have mystery readers back in person. And the elementary concert was open to anyone - no limit on number of guests.
It's amazing to me how many differences there are from one district to the next. Even quarantine rules....I have friends who have had to quarantine their kid multiple times already, and my kid has like a quarter of their class out with covid and still no quarantine for us.

What is the value in speculating or even worrying about what September 2022 will look like? Nobody has any answers to this question and SO much can change in the almost year until next September.
Live for today and stop stressing over a future that you have no control over. What a waste of energy.

Wow - we are not allowed in, our elementary concert was outside. For middle school, they had an evening indoor concert with 2 tickets per family. We had to scan QR codes on the program for contact tracing purposes... Our class parties are send in (I'm a class mom). I haven't seen the inside of the elementary school since Feb 2019. I can't even go into the vestibule when picking up early.
Most of the quarantines in our district have been through the bus and outside of school.

She also does not live in NY so while there are many similarities, it is NOT the same there like NY.
She also has no problem with vaccinating her children so another thing that is not an issue for her.
September WILL come quickly as we are almost 2 years into this already.
Perhaps you should know what you're talking about before you open your ignorant mouth.
My kids actually aren't vaccinated, they still have antibodies from having COVID.
NY and NJ........ VERY LITTLE difference between the two.
Stick to what you know which is VERY LITTLE about me or COVID for that matter.
NY: full indoor statewide mask mandate, NJ: no universal mandate right now NY - governor has stated she wants kids vaccinated in school by Sept, NJ: no such statements and has more lax vaccination requirements already.
You might not want to acknowledge it, but they are different. And if people on this LONG ISLAND board want to discuss their concerns, who are you to tell them they shouldn't?

Last week I got three letters home saying a child tested positive but we did not have to quarantine. Now the teacher is out with covid, and still no quarantine.
And our winter concert was jam packed. No one was enforcing anything. I could have been sitting next to someone who is now positive and I'd never know.
I think my district has given up.

Re: Schools September 2022
There is no way to know but Let’s be realistic it’s New York it’s never going to be like the states down south. If that is what anyone wants then they should start planning on leaving! Is it easy no is it ideal no but the chance of NY ever being like south is so slim.
Chances are unless by some miracle chance covid is all of sudden gone I would plan on kids to be wearing masks and/or a vaccine mandated will be needed.
If you’re not OK with either one of those scenarios you should start making alternate plans now. Chances are you won’t have much time to make it once A final decision is made. Take the mask mandate this year it was up to the schools and then she came in and made it mandatory.

We're talking about schools.
Masks are mandated in EVERY district as per Murphy. No different than NY.
NJ and NY have NO vaccination mandates, speculating about what the governor may or may not do doesn't make NY any different than NJ at this current moment.
You can talk about this all you want, nobody said not to. The point being made by myself and others who commented is that worry and speculation about September which is months and months away is pointless. Nobody has any idea what life will look life in the fall and everyone throwing out what they *THINK* it'll be like just gets everyone in a frenzy unnecessarily.
Best thing anyone can do? Don't worry about what you don't know and do what is best for YOUR family regardless of what's going on out there in the world.

I was going to say NY and NJ are vastly different, and I am so happy about that. I do hope it stays this way.
In terms of schools, again NJ is very different in that you don't need the vaccine to participate in after school or school programs like in NY.

I agree, it also lacks sensitivity and empathy.
People can't just uproot their life on a whim, it has to be carefully planned. Especially since these mandates seem to be coming out with little notice. I don't think the government is going to care enough to allow for parents to plan ahead before enforcing a vaccine mandate for schools.

Absolutely not as look what they are doing about NYE in the city. He is going to come out this week and let everyone knows what is going on. What about people who have already had plans months ago? They don't give a crap about them.

I know people who have lost a ton of money on tickets to Christmas shows in NYC because they changed the rules at the LAST minute and are now requiring 5 year olds to have at least one dose of a vaccine before they can see a show. Yet when the tix were bought that wasn't the case. And it's no refunds at some of them. So yeah, I can see how people are concerned about last minute bullshyt from the government. It's absolute insanity

Rules change everyday and I think a lot of it is a concern for many people, especially parents.

There is a big difference - Murphy seems to be a bit more realistic to date - not as much of a dictator. I had to send my kid to NJ last winter to play basketball (we live on the border so it is an easy option but he could play basketball there but not 5 miles away in NY).

I remember we used to joke that he would just look to Cuomo and do whatever he did. Now his mentor is gone and he's on his own! hah: But he did come close to being voted out right? Like he won by the skin of his teeth? So maybe he got nervous and trying to be a bit more moderate now.

So many thoughts on this… 1. Mask and vax mandate will never go back to 2019 way of life for schools. Or 2. Back to normal when new guidelines come down to treat Covid like any other virus, just in time for mid term elections and claiming victory over Covid.

Re: Schools September 2022
Well in my town in NJ, the local catholic school had 100 person in class spread of covid and shut down. They are all virtual until break on Thursday. In the public school, they did make two classes in one grade go virtual for a week when there were six kids with covid. It stopped the spread. At the high school over 85% are vaccinated. At the middle school 80% are vaccinated. At the catholic school they said less than 20% of the people are vaccinated without listing an actual number. If I had to guess based upon in town Facebook discussions I would guess it is zero kids and the 20% is the adults.
