The district in my county I mentioned above formally announced yesterday they are on pause from 11/23-1/19.

That’s insane. What are working parents supposed to do? They can’t work and teach their kids simultaneously. Something has to give either schools need to stay open or there needs to be unlimited paid family leave at 100% salary so parents can teach their kids

And considering it's not spreading in schools due to all the distancing precautions this is absolutely absurd.
I'd be furious

From DD's principal:

"It is a parent's responsibility to ensure they are available to supervise their child's remote learning activities. All parents make sacrifices for their children."

I don't even have to tell you my reaction to that.

Wow. That takes some balls to send that out. My community would be going crazy. I find that extremely irresponsible of the school district and would be asking for a detailed explanation on why they can not continue in person learning.

Rockland - and the district isn’t in the former red zone.

Why are they on pause, did their number spike in the school?

It is such a ****** thing to say but I do wonder how fed up schools may be. Our district has a group of people who keep pushing to be fully back. And the school keeps begging people to make the right choices outside of school hours, but people aren’t. During hybrid remote days, kids are hanging out together on the same couch side-by-side without masks during class. Tons of kids were hanging out together on Halloween, without masks, Or even just after school, all the kids are congregating again without masks. Sleepovers, parties, etc. But all of their parents want to school open immediately and have been bashing the admin, the district, teachers, the board of Ed, anyone they can. They are out for blood but have not once taken responsibility for their own actions. You can’t have it both ways.

Every teacher I’ve spoken to absolutely despises the whole remote component. I’ve heard that this year teaching is the hardest it’s ever been. They just want to be in school teaching normally. But if people don’t wanna listen, this is what’s going to happen and I find it wrong to put the blame on the schools. Schools are making children wear masks, they are cleaning, keeping kids apart. But then you’ll have kids come down with it due to outside activities and then everyone has to go to remote anyway for a few days… And contact tracing, quarantining. It’s yet another interruption.

The blame should be on community members who are acting recklessly. The school is stuck in the middle of it, and they also have to protect their staff.

It would be different if people were hanging out but taking precautions, like wearing masks. At this point, we’ve all understood that you can work and wear a mask and the rate stays very low, if nothing at all. But kids are socializing without them and there are consequences to that. So for the school to say listen, this is your responsibility now… I kind of see where they are aggravated. I’m not saying I agree with what they wrote or how they wrote it, but I can understand the frustration.

I know - but the amount of quarantines that happen once someone does test positive - one to two positive student cases is all it takes to shut down our middle and high school since so many teachers have to quarantine.

I love how it’s never poor decisions being made by government, school officials etc. Its parents fault, kids fault, Trump supporter, no mask wearing people, you leave your house, you breathe air.

Even if you aren’t in a hot zone, haven’t had any cases in the schools, haven’t been exposed, wash your hands 1000x - it’s always someone else’s fault never the poor, illogical decisions being made with no evidence or backing by the government and town officials. Over it. Chat Icon Chat Icon

They haven’t had a spike per se but they do have new cases pretty much daily.

I think it’s just exhausting notifying, closing, reopening and I’m sure those who’ve had to repeatedly quarantine are upset...

I agree. The true and initial blame is the government. 100%. I have said that before in prior posts. This could have been eradicated if we had leadership and if we didn’t have one side making fun of masks and Fauci and denying science. I also think there should’ve been a second or third stimulus by now. I think there should be help for people who are in a bind.

Maybe for the high and middle schools, but if the districts are doing the right thing the elementary schools should be fine.

My elementary school had a student test positive. The class was quarantined for 14 days. As the infection happened on Friday, they didn't even have to close the school. All other school classes remained open going forward. If more teaches end up getting infected it's because the teachers are not wearing masks and socially distancing in the break room and during off classroom hours.

Schools should remain open.

Sometimes there’s an issue where a sibling is in the middle school, and then they get hit. In your case, if it’s just your elementary school had one student test positive this entire time, then yes, I think your school should remain open.

I think keeping elementary schools open is critical. Middle and high schoolers should be mature enough to properly engage in remote learning. Trying to keep my kid who is in K glued to the laptop screen for six hours is an absolute nightmare. And that's with parental supervision.

Fully agree with everything BFNY said so well. Not to mention, talk to any teacher or school administrator and you will hear about how often parents send their kids into school with raging symptoms, lie on the apps that ask key questions, neglect to take temperature, but say they have, and decide nog to test after the kid is sent home with rashes, feveer, etc. because they don't want to know, can't be bothered. But, yes---these same people demand that schools be open for them---and mess it up for everyone else who is abiding by the regulations and doing their part to be transparent and compliant for others.

I agree. Remote learning blows. Especially hard if a student has an IEP or any sort of learning disability. I know middle schoolers and a high schoolers are struggling too. I heard some districts were able to open up full-time for middle school and high school because they have improved ventilation systems, where as other schools do not. Can anyone validate that? If so, I’m waiting for someone to publicly wonder where all the school tax dollars are going where we can’t have a better systems in every single school on LI.

Some schools are able to merely upgrade the filter if their HVAC system is newer, while others would require an entirely new HVAC system, which is very expensive and would take time to install.

My school has a MERV 8 - the lowest acceptable filter for a building to open.

It goes beyond maturity and it is hard for every student no matter age.

Older kids are losing out on lasts too which is an even harder hit.

All kids need to be in school.

Re: Schools virtual after thanksgiving?

All schools need to be open.

I teach HS. My high achievers would be fine with remote. They would miss the social aspect, but they would complete the tasks that needed to be done. My struggling learners can not navigate digital learning. It has been a huge struggle for them. I model every single day how to navigate the learning management system and many still have no idea how to use it. I have made dozens of instructional videos walking them through how to use it. I have had 1:1 meetings with them showing them exactly what needs to be done and they are still lost. Many of these students are ones who have chosen to be 100% virtual, which is a total mess. I am thankful that many are changing to hybrid starting on Monday. Fingers crossed that we stay face to face.

My son is in 1st grade and the amount of progress he has made since September is amazing. I pray every single day that they are able to remain face to face for the entire school year. They had a practice virtual half day last week and he said while it was okay, he missed real school. I was glad to see, however, that the district is thinking ahead in case we do need to go 100% remote. They have asked for feedback in order to improve it.

They're not on pause and there is no spike here. This was in reference to the chance of going full remote.

No one is socializing without masks. People call the police if they see anyone maskless.
They bike with masks, run with masks. No one is skirting the rules around here. Hence no spike.

If they're frustrated, they have a really low threshold for frustration. They're incompetent and trying to blame their inadequacies and inability to do their jobs on the parents. They are the laziest lot I've ever seen. The administration are a bunch of snide holes and DD's teacher is an ineffective moron who sits there with the kids watch youtube videos of other people reading books and then sends home 2 hours of homework. To kindergarteners.

Before I get chastised for having no respect for teachers, I'm not saying that at all. I read what many of the teachers on here say and they sound like wonderful teachers who care about their students and I feel awful for the positions they are put in.

So to be abundantly clear, I have no respect for THESE teachers and THIS administration, who are complete garbage.

They need to revisit their safety protocols. The community should be scrutinizing what they are doing to provide maximum social distancing. We have had numerous single covid cases in our HS and the HS never shuts down. The only ones that need to quarantine are those in close contact and if they are doing their social distancing and mask wearing correctly then there should not be that many people on mandatory quarantine.

At our district, people are reckless outside of school. And parents admit to falsifying the health surveys because surprise surprise, they don't want to deal with having to get their child tested for covid. But if no one is getting tested, how do we know and act swiftly to prevent others? Some people who had to quarantine, then forced 20+ other students to quarantine with them. It happens, even the strictest observers of rules can get sick. But most of the people who were getting sick - it was linked to super spreader events or house parties and things like that. Or they were around someone with covid and still decided to come to school. That negligence ruins it for everyone.

No one wants schools to close. I don't know anyone who does or anyone who loved what happened March-June. I was fine with it March, April, even May. But by May, I wanted her back in school. I think there is no reason schools need to close now. They can enforce masks, have hybrid schedules... even off a week for cleaning or whatever... but NOTHING should close a school down full time again like that.

So if you are worried, please make sure you are doing all you can to keep our kids in school. As simple as that.

I know my friends in Rockland are having a holiday pause.

Our district sent out a very positive email on Thursday, applauding the efforts made by students and staff and the community at large. We have had very few cases and all have been contained.

For them to shut down after Thanksgiving with no real reason would be detrimental. Obviously if the numbers IN OUR DISTRICT are up, then things need to be reconsidered. If they are how they are now, why close? It doesn't sound like our Superintendent has any interest in closing. I hope I read that right.

The fact is that when a family defrauds a school and causes other families to need to quarantine, miss in person school, endure testing, need childcare, etc., they cost them a lot of ime, money, and aggravation.

Protocols and systems are in olace to protect everyone and enable kids to be at school, but those who lie on apps, fail to wear masks, refuse to get tested or to disclose symptoms or exposures, or decline to limit gatherings rob everyone.

I would loose my fuckinggggg shit if my principal came back with that. I’m not one to blast people on FB but I would be posting it in my school and local mom groups!!!

I am so pissed off for you right now!!!!

Re: Schools virtual after thanksgiving?

I sent an email asking the superintendent if these rumors were true and are we going full remote after thanksgiving till January. And if so I hope they plan on giving patents as much notice as possible He responded he just got off a meeting with other western Suffolk superintendents in the area and said they heard the rumors and it’s not true. He said unless mandated by Cuomo there are no plan close and they will continue doing what they are doing now with no plans to go full remote.

Do I believe him I don’t know. A teacher (not in my district) say he has to say that but really if that’s true they are asssholes instead of being upfront about and giving parents warning. So I am hoping he’s being truthful.

Will it surprise me if Cuomo orders it; absolutely not!!Chat Icon Chat Icon
