Re: Schools virtual after thanksgiving?

I sent an email asking the superintendent if these rumors were true and are we going full remote after thanksgiving till January. And if so I hope they plan on giving patents as much notice as possible He responded he just got off a meeting with other western Suffolk superintendents in the area and said they heard the rumors and it’s not true. He said unless mandated by Cuomo there are no plan close and they will continue doing what they are doing now with no plans to go full remote.
Do I believe him I don’t know. A teacher (not in my district) say he has to say that but really if that’s true they are asssholes instead of being upfront about and giving parents warning. So I am hoping he’s being truthful.
Will it surprise me if Cuomo orders it; absolutely not!!
Our super said the same thing - and I trust he won't blindside us unless forced by Cuomo...
And now Cuomo is fighting DeBlasio to keep city schools open so I'm not sure if Cuomo will order schools closed for two months...
I know things can change at any moment but, I think it would take a number of cases/closures for my district to close for two months at this point (one already did in our county and they gave parents notice before they made their ultimate decision on Saturday)

I don't think Cuomo is looking to close schools at this point. He realizes that some schools may have to close if there are a lot of cases, but as a whole he doesn't see them as a problem.

When he allowed them to reopen this fall, he set a threshold of 9% infection rate for them to have to close again. So I agree, I don't think he's looking to do a sweeping closure at this point today.

I thought I heard or read today that Cuomo suggested considering the positivity rate in the district (or school) as opposed to the state or county when deciding to close. This makes much more sense. Schools should remain open if at all possible.
Schools are NOT the problem.

Definitely not. And closures have come in our district when a large number of staff had to quarantine - too many to get subs.
I wish we were working towards more in person learning than days a week though from 3-12 grade. And working on not having one asynchronous day...
Things seem to work better under the hybrid though as compared to full remote as there are more glitches when everyone is remote... or someone brings their cat to class and makes them do funny things...

Schools virtual after thanksgiving?
Schools are not the problem but we have seen more cases in our district since Friday than the entire school year so far. We are coming up on the timeline where parents can opt their kids back in and due to increase in cases and the possible increased students it’s getting scary

Re: Schools virtual after thanksgiving?
We are keeping our kids remote for two weeks after thanksgiving. They are usually hybrid but after the huge spike in cases after halloween our district closed for two weeks. I’m sure thanksgiving will be worse. We have many neighbors that are Trumpers very adamant to have their typical huge gatherings. I just don’t want to deal with COVID testing and myself possibly having to quarantine from work.

Why are only Trump supporters being shunned for not wearing masks and not doing the right thing? What happened to SOME people as I am sure there are a lot of people who don’t support him who do the same.
This is why this country is divided.

You are right, it would be wrong to generalize a group or assume only Trump supporters don’t wear masks. In this case, I am referencing people(5 families in my block) that are very proud and vocal Trump supporters that regularly post on Facebook COVID mask-liberty infringement articles and go to bat defending him. They can do as they wish, I don’t say a word to them about it, but I don’t trust that they will social distance so I will act as I feel appropriate to protect my family.

The country is divided because our President is a loser that doesn't know how to try to unite people. It starts at the top.

So you can say anything you want and be nasty to people and blame it all on Trump?

I never understood this mentality. I never lived my life or based how I speak to and treat people based on the President of the United States. I don't care who the President was. From the best president to the worst one, do people really say- OK who's in the White House? Let me model how I act based on them?

Re: Schools virtual after thanksgiving?
Our district in NJ has no plans to close, we had one COVID case and that was weeks ago but because of the cohort groups we didn't need to close the school. As long as things continue as they have been, our district plans on being open.

Exactly, nor why would you even use that basis by how other people live? You should be the best YOU can be and not act bad because someone else does. You are lowering yourself at that point.

Re: Schools virtual after thanksgiving?
Our district put out a call last night saying the kids need to be in school, they want the kids in school, so unless the Gov shuts our district down, our kids will be in school after Thanksgiving. Lots of rumors out there.

Ours did something similar. Pretty much unless Cuomo shuts it down- which I think his threshold for that is 9% infection rate but who knows- they are staying open

Schools virtual after thanksgiving?
Overall mixed messages. We have not heard anything official however MS and HS teachers are actively prepping the hybrid kids for full online learning within the past 1-2 weeks and indicating they were told things would be switching soon. Hopefully it is just preparation as my district has been doing a good job handling the isolated cases that have popped up.

My superintendent said we are only closing if the DOH/Cuomo makes us.
