Scrubs are not appropriate for a classroom. They need to be washed just like regular clothing and have no magical germ repealing properties. As for being comfortable it really depends on your size because they are not always a great fit. Children (at least mine) associate scrubs with healthcare workers. Get some inexpensive machine washable clothing.

I'm curious as to what makes scrubs not appropriate in a classroom. I am being told I have to go into somewhere between 9-10 classrooms a day of children where there is not enough room to socially distance for me but the kids are spaced apart, where the students will be taking masks off to eat (oh but no indoor dining allowed). I will be wearing a KN95 mask (unless or until I can find N95's), a cloth mask over it, a headband where I can attach said mask, a face shield, my hair in a pony tail (possibly covered not sure yet), gloves, scrubs and a lab coat. I am sorry if this makes your children uncomfortable but I am going to do what I need to in order to protect myself and my family. I also will be standing in a corner near an open window and not going near a single child. If this doesn't work for you please feel free to keep your children home.

Why are you returning to work?

If you can’t do your job, quit.

I didn't know my choice of PPE meant I couldn't do my job.

I don’t know what grade you teach but I would think “not going near a single kid” and teaching from a corner would hamper your ability to teach in an effective manner. Also, they won’t be able to hear you if you’re wearing multiple masks and a face shield.

People who treat covid patients don’t wear that amount of PPE. Where on earth did you find research supporting the need for all that?

I find this to be very extreme. I have been working as an essential employee every day since the start of this pandemic, going into people's homes, going into hospitals etc armed with a face mask and hand sanitizer. You aren't a doctor treating sick patients. You are working in a school with kids who will be wearing masks. The schools are having safety measures and having kids wear masks. Beyond wearing a mask and using good hygiene there's a not much you can do. Unless your employer is telling you to wear scrubs, why would you do that? Scrubs arent PPE, and need to be washed like regular clothes. It sounds like you're having en extreme anxiety about going back.and maybe you should consider taking a leave of absence.

Do you really think what you’re describing is you doing your job? It sounds like you’re hiding in the corner unable to interact with your students properly.

Teachers are excellent at projecting. Ive been very confused at how many people pull their masks down to speak-keep the dang mask on. I can hear you fine.

Wow. Just wow. The only person that I’ve seen wear somewhat close as to what you are describing was my DENTIST who is 2 INCHES from Peoples faces! I know doctors and nurses who don’t wear that much stuff! And to not go near any kids? I don’t know what grade you teach but if someone got hurt? G-d forbid someone was eating something in class and started to choke? Had a medical episode? Your first instinct would be not to rush to them? I really suggest that you take the year off and reevaluate the situation next year.

I am disappointed as to what this website has become. I feel like no one is able to have an opinion anymore or say how they truly feel without getting ganged up on. It's like "bully-like" atmosphere on here lately.

Why is wearing scrubs a problem? From the other posts, it was clear that most wanted children back in the classroom. If scrubs makes me feel better to go teach my children, then why not? Masks are NOT mandatory in my district.Chat Icon

The defintion of bully is to intimidate and harm others you percieve as vulnerable, and generally over an extended period of time using multiple methods of intimidation.

Random people having dialogue on the internet and disagreeing and getting emotional is not bullying.

Wear whatever you’re comfortable wearing! FWIW, I follow a fashion influencer who is compiling a whole list of business casual outfits based around scrubs, so there must be a demand! Best of luck to you this upcoming school year!

Scrubs isn’t the problem IMO. It’s the theory That people think they are safer. Yoga pants would be just as safe.

The person who is basically in a haz may suit is over the top and deserves to be called out for it. If people are not comfortable going back to any job, I get it but then you need to take a leave.

I am not against wearing masks, but I know it will be difficult as a teacher to keep mine on and teach and talk with it on the whole day. I feel like I will be shouting.

Some didn’t understand why scrubs were any better or safer, but no one bullied.

The teacher who is wearing three layers of hazmat protection, and still won’t attempt to go anywhere near a child needs to really rethink her profession and her choice to go back to work. She’s either doing all of that out of spite or she is genuinely terrified. Either way she needs to step away from teaching for a while.

Scrubs isn't the problem at all. In fact my Dr. recommended I wear scrubs to work, I'm an essential worker so I have never had the luxury of being home. But not because scrubs have some magical properties, she said that Cotton clothes, that could be laundered on hot and dried would be fine. Its about fabric that can take laundering in hot water. But yeah, that poster should not teach. And I am cautious as hell and think most people are not taking it seriously at all. Especially on this website. But this woman is definitely not ready to go back to work.

I am VERY cautious and this seems extreme.

KN95 and N95 masks need to be properly fit to your face every time you wear them in order to be effective.

I plan on wearing a cloth mask, regular clothes and my lab coat with my hair in a ponytail. I touch my hair a lot if it is down. I teach science so I have two lab coats that I wear regularly. I do not plan on wearing my nice work clothes as those need to be dry cleaned. I have a bunch of school spirit wear that I’ll be sporting this year because I don’t care if those get destroyed with being washed over and over again.

Gloves are not necessary. Just wash your hands frequently and/or use hand sanitizer.

I’m requiring all students to wear masks in my room regardless of social distancing as I don’t think students will remain 6 feet apart at all times. I also will be doing instruction outside whenever possible.

I would be worried if I was a teacher. It’s different than working at Target or in an office with adults. Plus, some kids have one-on-one help where they are very close to their assigned teacher or assistant. Younger children are often unsanitary.

Researchers still don’t know everything about this virus or transmission. There was some belief that children were possibly transmitters. When we closed in March, numbers were high for awhile and started to go lower. My concern would be if kids were the main transmitters and by closing schools, it helped keep numbers down. I suppose we will see what happens with opening.

I just don’t fault those in education for being wary. I’ll get to return to an office at some point where people aren’t sneezing in my face or have booger fingers, or worse. I sense that this is the big experiment and kids and teachers are the test subjects. That’s anxiety-producing for everyone.

And then you see that nine kids now have Covid after that crowded picture in the Georgia school. Or how a bunch of kids in Nassau just came back from sleep away camp with it. I’m not going to judge a teacher wanting to wear scrubs. Do whatever you have to do.

I do wonder if people realize just how many teachers probably ARE leaving or taking a year off when people keep saying teachers should resign if they're not comfortable. I know of three and I don't even know that many people lol. Between retirees, medical leave, child care leaves, etc, I honestly don't know how schools are going to fill regular positions let alone all the subs that are going to be needed when teachers get sick or need to quarantine.

I’m with you.

I work with kids who can’t tolerate the feeling of socks on their feet, and who sneeze like explosions. They won’t be wearing masks.

I’d rather know that I can wear clothes underneath and take scrubs off before I get into my car and throw them in a bag.

Not sure why everyone’s so angry about it

Someone said that the virus lives longer on regular clothes than it does on scrubs and that isn’t true. Scrubs are not magic.

Wear whatever you like, but you’re just as likely to get covid in scrubs as you are in regular clothes.

I guess you can do that if you want to, but again scrubs have no magical properties. And a bunch of teachers dressed up in doctors scrubs will just be more of a distraction in an already distracting situation.

I agree! Everyone wants school open and if wearing scrubs makes teachers feel safer or if its more convenient then why do you care? I don’t believe she asked for opinions on IF she would be wearing scrubs but rather what type for those who use then. If you had nothing important to contribute... like telling the woman to leave her job or shave her head... then why respond unless you are trying to be cute or funny (P.S. you are neither!!). Or a jerk!

Seriously this is not ringing people up for 2 mins while there is a plexiglass barrier between you and being in an large open indoor space like a grocery store or target. These teachers will be in a small, poorly ventilated room indoors for hours with kids, most of which are germ factories. DOH did a shit job of protecting their workers from covid earlier this year. I don’t blame teachers for doubting their safety will be last on the list of DOH priorities this go round too.

I love dressing up for work but I think this year is going to be a jeans/sneakers/easy to wash shirt. Comfort is key.

Same here.
