seeing vs. hearing the heartbeat

when did you actually HEAR and not just see the heartbeat? I've seen it at every sono but never heard it.

I've had 2 sonos at my dr's and the NT scan. I have my 14 week sono tomorrow and I'm going to ask my doctor. It just bugs me a little that I haven't heard it even though I see it pumping away on the screen.

Re: seeing vs. hearing the heartbeat

6 wks -- and at each sono we've had since at 8, 12, 16, and 17 wks.

I see a high risk OB as well as regular, so I get a lot of sonos.

I heard it for all of 2 seconds at my NT scan on Monday. I asked the sono tec to turn it back on for just a moment b/c I wanted to record it and he said:

"Sure, if you want me to heat up your baby's tissue"

AHH EWWW what a jerk!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

that's the thing, i expected to hear it then. that tech didn't have a great bedside manner either; she couldn't get a good shot of the neck and acted like it was the baby's fault. *****.

Re: seeing vs. hearing the heartbeat

i heard it at 10 weeks. i had many sonos before that but all were with my RE where he doesnt use the audio part of the sono. at my 10w ob appt he did an internal sono and he put the sound on and we heard it. at my 12w ultrascreen they did an external sono and we heard it again. then at 16w we heard it at the doctor with a doppler.

Re: seeing vs. hearing the heartbeat

Heard it and saw it at 6 and 8 via the internal.

At the 12 week sono with my doc, it was external and she got it but we didn't hear it.

Finally, at 16 weeks, we heard it externally and from there on.

Re: seeing vs. hearing the heartbeat

The first time I heard it was at 11 weeks with the doppler. I had a sono at 7 weeks and 9 weeks and they didn't even bother to turn on the speaker on the sono machine, claiming it wouldn't be possible to hear it. We probably could have though. Then they flipped on the speaker at the NT scan at 12 weeks and we heard it the first time at a sono.

Re: seeing vs. hearing the heartbeat

During my first appt at 8 wks I saw it, then she turned up the volume & we heard it too. After that I've heard it at every appointment (rarely got sonos though because my Dr is annoying like that)

Re: seeing vs. hearing the heartbeat

Ask the next time you go. I heard it at 9 weeks. It was the most amazing sound....I didn't think I would, but I cried!

Re: seeing vs. hearing the heartbeat

Heard them at 7 weeks but it is not common for my practice to let you hear it that early.

Didn't hear them again until 12 weeks.

Have heard them every appointment since.

Re: seeing vs. hearing the heartbeat

I had a few sonograms at previous appointments. Last week, I had my appoint with my OBGYN at 14w5days and I asked her when will we hear the heartbeat and her answer was - "today!". It took a minute or two for her to find it but it was really amazing hearing the babies heartbeat for the first time :)

Re: seeing vs. hearing the heartbeat

First time I heard it was at my 12 week appointment. You should def ask to hear it at your next one, although the Dr. should be doing it anyway if he is not doing a sono.
