I also never meant to "devalue" anyone's opinions. However, there are agencies that are motivated soley by revenue. As a parent we have to make sure the people who are there to help our children are not only considering profit. (This is true for any profession)
LIF is an incredible resource and a wonderful community.
All in all, I want to thank Cjik for starting this thread. SPD is just finally being "identified" and there is truly so much we can do to help the little ones with these issues. Especially advocate to get SPD in the DSM-IV so that research can really be funded and service providers can be available.
ITA. Just like some special needs school only care about quotas and if your child in not in the right class he/she may not progress.
I honestly never felt any disrespect on this board. That may be the truly only drama free board.
We are all parents of special needs children or working in the field. Maybe with different issues, but all truly supportive to one another. I don't think anyone has ever been devalued as a problem being less important than another one.
We have enormous challenges with our children. Not only dealing with the typical things typical kids do but dealing with the stress and commitment it means to have a child with special needs. Whether it's eating, sensory, speech, physical/motor, ADD/ADHD, MR, genetic issues, on the sprectrum and everything in between, I do feel we do understand each other struggles and would never undermine ANYONE.

DD was just diagnosed with SPD. She is not on the spectrum. We had her evaluated through the school district - she is almost 4 so it was CPSE not EI. She qualified and is going to receive OT services 2x a week.

Sensory issues are very common for people on the autism spectrum. Individuals vary in their responses to sensation -- some may be hypersensitive (over-sensitive) to some things, and hyposensitive (under-sensitive) to others. Any of the senses may be affected. Working daily as a special education teacher (independent contractor)1:1 with children who have autism I had the seen how a parent assisted their child with a Neurodevelopmentalist and the child benefited greatly. Someone mentioned getting a special education evaluation which I also provide free using an assesment tool called the Developmental Assessment of Young Children.
It considers cognitive,communication, physical, adaptive and social emotional development.
I am in awe by the progress we make as I listen to the child and their parent. I'm a Long Islander parent so let me know if anyone needs any information on Autism. I always seek to give parents a heads up from start to finish about early intervention, CPSE and CSE services as well as strategies to implement that have worked for me.

If you are concerned about SPD. the Develpmental Assessment of Young Children is NOT the tool you would use to diagnose that and/or ANY developmental delay. It is an overall assessment tool that therapists (usually special education teachers) utilize to determine the need for services and/or other evaluations. As a provider who has used the Developmental Assessment of Young Children, if I even had a concern that a child had sensory issues, I would recommend an OT evaluation and/or neurological eval. They would be the professionals best suited to diagnose such a disorder. If your child is turning 3 in 3 weeks and does not currently recieve services, the county will probably tell you to contact your local school district to start the process for evaluations.
