Separation Anxiety in dogs- HELP
Bowie goes absolutely crazy when I leave the house. I am never gone for more than a few hours, usually only 1-2 hrs, and not even every day. We have to crate him when we leave because otherwise he poops and pees all over the house. When he is in the crate he somehow manages to get the tray out of the bottom of the crate, I don't know what he is doing. I hear him barking as soon as I close the door an then again when I get out of the car. He does this pathetic whining thing when I come into the house.
He walks 2+miles a day with DH at night, except for when the weather is bad. I can't take him out for walks in the morning now because it is too hot for everyone.
The other day before we left, I went out and threw the ball around with him in the backyard to tire him out, and left a radio on, but the same thing happened.
I just don't know what to do. Any suggestions would be very appreciated!
ETA: He wasn't always like this. He was great for the first 6 months or so we had him, and then this started about two months ago. I can't pin down anything that changed drastically for him that would cause it.

Does he go in willingly? I remember Cesar saying on an episode about it.. something about needing to go in calmly and not be forced in, to set the tone for while they are in there.
that's all I remember though, sorry

Yes, he goes in all by himself. In fact, he will sleep in there during the day, by himself, when I am home.
It is so confusing because he is really a loner. He spends most of the day in a different part of the house than we are all in, but then when we leave goes bonkers. I don't get it.

Do you make a big deal about leaving? Do you make a big fuss over him when you come home? Both of those can contribute and worsen the separation anxiety IME.
I think greenfreak posted something really helpful about separation anxiety in the past few months... giving a command when you leave, practicing for short periods of time, etc. I'll see if I can find it and link to it here...

Okay, I can't find it! Maybe greenfreak herself will chime in.

Nope. When I leave, I just leave. He goes into the crate, I get the kids ready to go, and we leave. When I come home I just open the door and let him out of the crate.
