Seriously? My daughter does NOT look like a boy! VENT
So, DD gets mistaken as a boy all the time. Apparently if a child wears brown cordoroy pants, this child is automatically a boy. It doesn't matter that the pants have flowers on them, or that the child has a pink sweater on, or even that the child has earrings on! Brown pants trump all- and its a boy!
I cannot tell you how many time DD has gotten mistaken for a boy. Naturally, I'm always bothered by it but just chalk it up to people opening their mouths when they shouldn't- but what really takes the cake is what happened this morning when I dropped her off a daycare.
We've been going to this daycare for 3.5 months now. There have been NO major changes in personel- and generally speaking, all the teachers know all of the kids.
So this morning, I ring the bell, and one of the teachers from another room opened the door. Mind you, this teacher has opened the door for us a million times before!
DD had her blue pea coat on this morning- but had jeans on with flowers- and pink and white shoes- and yes, had her earrings on. DD always gives whoever opens the door a big smile. The teacher said "Oh, HE is so handsome! He's always got the biggest smile on when I open the door!"
OMG- I was mortified. Normally, I don't have a problem saying "SHE's a girl" to whomever makes these stupid comments- probably because we will never see them again- but I just couldn't not bring myself to say something this morning since we will probably see this woman 5x a week for the next 4 years!
I'm sorry, it just really made me mad!

yeah I get it all the time too. Pink, brown, teal, flowers, ANYTHING and people ask how old is he?
"HE" when she clearly has on all pink?!
I even had someone feel stupid when I said it's a girl and said, well her hair looks like a boy's?

In that situation, I'd probably be perturbed as well!
However, with perfect strangers, it doesn't really bother me.

That's why I always put a bow in Lily's hair....or put it up in a little ponytail. I HATE when people think she's a boy....drives me bonkers! One time, she was wearing a jean jacket with pink butterflies all over it, and everyone thought she was a boy because of the denim jacket!!

I think the idea that you may see this person everyday would MAKE me say something. I wouldn't want it to continue. Some people need to just open their eyes and pay attention before opening their mouths.
I'm sorry you're upset

Your DD does not look like a boy at all.
I would have corrected that person right away.

Re: Seriously? My daughter does NOT look like a boy! VENT
People are idiots.....I get the opposite - people saying "She is beautiful" to my son. this has happened on days where he is draped in blue. The first couple of times, I figured he was probably wearing something neutral and was still pretty young. I think in my case, it is because we had a green infant seat and a mint green stroller - I guess that screams "chick" no matter what you wear.
I would probably say something to her since you do see her all the time.

Re: Seriously? My daughter does NOT look like a boy! VENT
That is terrible and I would TOTALLY say something!
We have the same problem in the reverse. DS is CONSTANTLY mistaken for a girl. He ALWAYS is dressed like a boy - most of his clothes are navy blue! And, he is a big kid for his age (very tall). I think its b/c his hair is getting kind of long and it is curly....but I HATE it! It is so embarr! I feel your pain OH and my favorite comment back is "he is TOO PRETTY to be a boy!" - or "i've never seen a boy with pouty lips!" COME ON

Re: Seriously? My daughter does NOT look like a boy! VENT
When DD was still in her infant seat, we would dress her head to toe in pink, but the carrier was blue (inherited from DS, but also one that I researched for safety, and it happened to only come in blue....).
We would get several people saying how cute "he" looked. When we mentioned that she was a she, they said something like "Oh, well the carrier was blue, so I just thought....".
The SAFETY gear is blue..... her OUTFIT is pink. Which do you think is more relevant?

It happens to me, too, but I blow it off, since, I, too, have been unsure about the sex of babies & had mistaken a boy for a girl. For my DD, I usually put a bow in her hair so it usually avoids the problem. Otherwise, I correct the person, without making a big deal & laugh.

SHE does not look like a boy at all. She is a beautiful little girl
If the teacher makes the mistake again I would correct her...in a very nice smiley kind of way. I bet she'll feel awful for the mistake and it won't happen again.
For some reason people assume clothing color and hair length to certain genders only. I've had encounters where I wasn't sure - newborn dressed in all yellow - I just keep my comments neutral - what a cutie pie, how old? like that.

Thanks guys!! I put a bow in her hair this morning.
If the teacher does it again, I'm totally going to say something- I just didn't want to make her feel bad!

Re: Seriously? My daughter does NOT look like a boy! VENT
I got that the other day as I was walking DD to day care. She was wearing jeans, a PINK argyle shirt, a green sweater with RUFFLES and PINK sparkly shoes. And earrings. And she was screaming her little head off.
Someone said "oh that little boy is crying" and even though there was so much going on with me at that moment, and this woman was a total stranger, I still made a point to growl "she's a GIRL!"
I DEFINITELY would have said something to the day care.

I heard this a few times too when DS was an infant. I just corrected them. I think the teacher should know she is not a HE esp since she sees her and you every day. Next comment I would correct her.

Oh, Liz... I just saw your post!!
Kaitlyn is a beautiful little girl!!! You know Thomas thinks so!!
Thomas has been mistaken for a girl on more than one occasion when wearing a green shirt or something. I think he looks 100% boy, but others seem to think differently...
I think I can guess what teacher made this dopey comment... If I'm right, the only thing I can say to make you feel better is that she's a total cook and says crazy stuff all the time!!

I know, people are bizarre. esp with the earrings and pink. I did mistake a kid for a boy yesterday who was a girl though. I just thought it was a boy until I saw the pink edges on the shoes...but she was lost at WPF and I found her Mom for her so hopefully I get a pass.
