Re: Sex Education- UPDATE with the teacher's response

Ugh I remember 7th grade sex ed. So awkward. Lots of giggling and nasty jokes. Putting the condom on the banana was the worst. I hated it.

yes I remember it was taught like you got STDs from kissing or any bodily fluid exchange. not specifically HIV but you could and can get herpes so easily. I remember that was the last time the girls shared chapstick.

It didn't really 'count' until we got to HS. Then Sex ed made sense. At 7th grade it was just an overview. But yeah I dont mind the idea of my school teaching my child NOT to have sex, avoid sex etc and I'm the one to teach her about condoms and birth control. I think we as parents SHOULD be more responsible for this. but not saying that parents ARE.

See, that's the thing. I am responsible in this way. I had him at 17 and don't want him to make the same mistakes I did so this is something I feel strongly about. My district has I e of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in the area. Out of 1000 teens, 22.6 get pregnant. I looked it up. That's a lot. I talk to the parents of his peers and they are NOT discussing this stuff with their kids. And kids are having sex! They should be taught how to be safe, and if the parents aren't going to do it I think the school should.

Here's my view on it. I never want my kids to go sky diving. I think it's dangerous and I want nothing to do with it. However, if they DO go skydiving, I surely want them to be informed, be safe, and to wear a parachute!!

I find it fascinating that students will have to wait until 11th grade for another "health" class. I had already been dating and a bit...um...."experienced."Chat Icon Perhaps kids might be better served with the "abstinence only" education earlier than at 16Chat Icon

UPDATE: I emailed the teacher on Sunday (the email is below somewhere) and he just got back to me today (Wednesday). He apologized that it took so long but he "had to talk to his boss before calling me." Chat Icon

I'm a teacher and it is common practice to speak to your chairperson before communicating with parents about certain (hot button/touchy) situations.

Chat Icon It's a damn shame.

Either way you'll be teaching your kids the right way but for the sake of the other students, I'd consider getting some parents together on this to see about changing some curriculum.

No, this is public school... Sorry, I should have clarified.

Your place to start is at your next Board of Education meeting.. these curriculums are implemented by the board.. that is why it is so important to vote for your BoE AND find out about the candidates.

Report: Sex ed in NY schools inadequate
Originally published: September 12, 2012 9:38 PM
Updated: September 12, 2012 9:49 PM

Most school districts surveyed on Long Island and upstate failed to provide adequate sex education to teenage students, according to a report released Wednesday by the New York Civil Liberties Union.
The report, "Birds, Bees and Bias," found that only about a third of districts surveyed taught students how to use condoms in preventing pregnancy and disease. More than half provided no instruction on sexual orientation, and nearly two-thirds excluded any mention or depiction of female external genitalia.
"It's shocking what passes for sex ed in some New York classrooms," said Johanna Miller, the report's co-author and assistant advocacy director for the NYCLU.

The report analyzed sex-education textbooks and other materials used in 82 districts statewide, including 16 on the Island. Materials were used during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years. Districts contacted enrolled about half the state's entire enrollment outside New York City.
Survey sponsors reported that the most commonly used sex-education textbooks mentioned only abstinence as a means of preventing pregnancy -- evidently reflecting federal school funding that is focused on abstinence.
Some Island educators find this approach inadequate.
"We teach abstinence first, of course," said John R. Williams, superintendent of Amityville schools. "But we're also realists, and we know kids are going to experiment."
Williams added that health classes at the district's high school include demonstrations of proper condom placement on models of male organs.
Cynthia Proscia, a health-education professor at Adelphi University, said she has found in informal surveys of Island schools that about half do not teach human sexuality at the middle-school level -- the age when sexual experimentation begins.
"Are schools doing enough? Absolutely not," Proscia said.
The NYCLU report specifically criticizes classroom materials used in Bay Shore and Sewanhaka.
In the case of Sewanhaka, the report cited a test question that used the phrase "sexual preference" in describing heterosexual and homosexual behavior. NYCLU staffers contended that such phrases suggest, incorrectly, that homosexuality is a voluntary preference rather than an orientation based largely on genetic factors.
Ralph Ferrie, in his second year as Sewanhaka's superintendent, said his district was reviewing curriculum materials and "will make the appropriate corrections."
In the case of Bay Shore, the report found that definitions of sexual intercourse referred only to heterosexual sex -- in effect, excluding non-heterosexual students from consideration.
Sonia Bonilla, a secretary in Bay Shore's communications department, did not respond to a request for comment.

ITA. What's taught in most classrooms isn't the teacher's choice; it's developed by the state or district.

I think it's nuts that they wait so long for the talk and that it's abstinence only. Kids are having sex at very young ages now, like middle school and need to be taught about protecting against diseases and pregnancy. As much as you don't want your middle schooler to be having sex, they might give in to peer pressure and you would want to make sure that they are safe.

I worked at the Seaford Cinemas in high school and my boss walked into the men's room and there were a line of middle school boys with girls going down the line going down on them. He was horrified! One of the other managers was a mother in the district and she said there were many parent meetings and notes home regarding"the Seaford train" apparently it happened often

You should ask directly or indirectly to the teacher about all this wrong stuff they are teaching to their students. This is the only way we can save our children from false knowledge.

Based on your update I would escalate this. Find out who is choosing the curriculum and bring this to the policy makers and experts on the topic itself. Try this:

Sex Education- UPDATE with the teacher's response

Thank you to everyone who posted. I am going to email the chairperson and the principal, and go from there. I have never even BEEN to a Board of Education meeting, and I'm anxious at the thought of doing that. I've spoken to a few of DS's friends parents, and they are all for abstinence only education, and only one has ever spoken to their kids about sex. One, the mother of a girl Nick's age, hasn't even spoken to her daughter about menstruation. I asked her why, and she said "I didn't get my period until I was 16 so I figure I have plenty of time." what is wrong with these people?!?! I have a feeling I'm going to have a long road ahead of me. Thank you for everyone who posted resources, and I can't believe Newsday ran an article about it yesterday!!! How coincidental.

And for those who asked about the district, it's Lindenhurst. Ironically, this district has a very high teen pregnancy rate, as well as a high STI rate. So clearly this abstinence thing is working out well for everyone.

Our district did a 3 day puberty class for 5th graders. Some parents didn't thought it was crazy to teach girls (ages 10-11) about erections. That was until the speaker gave an example of why it's taught. It's because (1) it's a natural thing that happens to males so they want to each both boys & girls to be respectful of the changes in their bodies (2) if an adult has your child on their lap or if they're masturbating, it's an inappropriate reaction.

Honestly I was floored. Most parents I know focus on good touches, bad touches, stranger danger.I never occurred to me to talk about that.

I think I know what district you are in, and I went there through sixth grade. I remember the three day puberty class, and even back then it was handled SO well. I think my district is back in the Stone Age or something.

Our district did the puberty lesson in 5th grade, with a movie, etc. But it wasn't about sex at all, just about their own bodies.

Re: Sex Education- UPDATE with the teacher's response

Our district has an abstinence based human life cycle program for science this year (6th grade). They were very clear in communicating this to us on open house night. It complements the introduction to human sexuality and puberty that the kids were given last year in 5th grade.

I'm fine with it. It is a tricky subject and impossible to please all parents. I have had no issues with teaching human sexuality to my child in a way that I feel meets his understanding and his unique needs based on his age and experiences.

I suspect that any parent who wants to give their child a broader and more complete definition of sexuality and it's potential repercussions will have no problem communicating those lessons to their child. And if they do, the school guidance and support offices are always willing to help facilitate conversations of that nature with parent cooperation.

Introducing a more complex sexuality curriculum for all students just starts a shitstorm that most districts would prefer to avoid.

I'm in Lindenhurst, and DS is in 7th grade. This is the first they are hearing about anything, even puberty. They don't have any kind of sex Ed again until 11th grade, and them it is also an abstinence only curriculum.

I think I would even be ok with what they're learning this year being only the mechanics of sex, if they did some kind of comprehensive sex ed in, say, 9th grade. That would be ok with me. But this is the last they are going to talk to them about it until they are 16! I'm sorry, but it is too
late at 16.

In a perfect world it would be great if schools took care of the science and mechanics of sex Ed and parents took care of the discussions of values, contraception, etc. However, based in the discussions I've had with parents, this is not going to happen in most cases. As A result of this complete failure of school and parents, you end up with a bunch of kids who are ignorant about the functioning of their own bodies, their own sexuality, and their responsibility to themselves and their future partners.
