Sharing Blood with the baby
I've seen this in a couple of posts...
At what week do you actually share blood with your baby?
So basically, if you are late with AF and get a BFP you don't share blood with your baby for another week (5wks). Is that right?
Thanks

I could be very wrong, but from what I've read on here, you count the weeks from when you ovulate. So by the time you are late you are already 2 weeks pregnant?
Then it's 3 weeks from there? I could be wrong though.

This is my understanding too.

You actually calculate the weeks from the date of your last AF, so technically when you get your BFP you are already about 4 weeks. I know it doesn't make sense since you are considered pregnant before you even ovulate, but that is the way that Dr's calculate it. You are technically physically pregnant for a total of 38 weeks, but they count it as 40.

Ah! OK - so by the time you are late, you have 1 week until you are 5 weeks pregnant.
Thanks!!

I know that that is the way they do it, but it really makes NO sense to me.
Also, for those of us with longer cycles, determining due date and how far along you are is impossible under these guidelines-- unless we get to be prego for less time than everyone else.

trust me, i know it makes absolutely no sense, but it is the way the Dr calculates your "estimated" due date. Like with me for example, I know that I ovulated late on CD19 the month I got pregnant, so to calculate my EDD from my LMP is not accurate, it is 5 days off. When I had my first sonogram the Dr said it was 5 days off what she thought it should be and I explained the late ovulation to her. She said she wasn't going to change my EDD though since it was less than a week different.
There are plenty of due date calculators on the web that factor in conception date and/or cycle length, but most doctors don't go by that. The reason that Drs use the LMP as a starting off point is because a lot of women don't know when they ovulated because they don't use OPKs and whatnot. If you do know when you ovulated, you can simply count from 2 weeks before that date to figure out how many weeks are you at any given time. Hope this makes some sense.
