shed -- do you need a permit
Does anyone know if you need a permit for a wood shed? The house already has an old dilapidated metal shed. We are replacing with a 8x12' wood shed. This is in the TOH. Anyone know?

You need to check with the town. Our town has a limit - if its smaller than a certain size, then no permit needed. I assume TOH is the same.

Yes you need a permit for any size shed on your property. Usually it’s only a problem if a neighbor complains or you get other work done. I personally get permits so no headaches in the future.

Check on your town website. In the Town of Babylon any shed under 10 x 10 doesnt need a permit. I bought an 8 x 8 from Lowes and had to show the installers that i didn't need a permit so i printed this from the town website https://www.townofbabylon.com/DocumentCenter/View/161

I don't remember all of the Town of Islip rules, but I'm pretty sure one of our rules is a cumulative size. If 10x10 is the limit, you can't put a dozen 8x10 sheds on your property. It would be a total of 100 s/f, or whatever the limit is.

this is spot on. OP is in TOH, this is TOH's rules.
They say for literally any size shed you need a permit.
If you're buying one, it shouldn't be hard to get the permit, just fill out the paperwork, use an existing survey and attach the plans from the manufacturer.
We built our own, this took a longer time since I made a change on my hand drawn plans and it delayed things.
I personally think the whole thing is BS that the process takes so long. They want their fee, but really, why can't you walk in with the application and out with a shed permit in a day, is beyond me.
