Shopping Carts and Little Ones in Car
I went to Trader Joe's yesterday with my twin 2 1/2 yr old boys. I put the bags in the trunk and got them in their car seats. It was about 103 degrees here yesterday. I took the cart and started to walk it over to the corral, but the aisle I was in didn't hve one. It was all the way in another aisle and down about 10 cars. I decided it was too hot to leave them in the car, so I put it in between two spots(not blocking either one) and went back to my car.
A woman saw me and was staring at me so I just ignored her because I could tell she was looking to say something. I got back in my car, started it and made brief eye contact with her and she mouthed shame on you and did that finger thing that means the same. So annoying. Sorry but I am not leaving my kids in a steaming hot car to retrun a cart to an area that is so far away. What do you do? Normally I am with my husband so one of us walks it back while the other stays in the car with the AC on.

Ummm, yeah, you did the right thing.
It's hot, your kids are in car seats roasting, unattended.

When I have the kids in the car, hot or not, I try to park right near the cart return thing. But if I cannot, I put the cart in between the cars...I am not risking leaving my kids in the car, not matter what.

I would have pulled up to her and said "Oh you're right, next time I'll leave my children unattended in the roasting car just to make sure the cart is put back." Give a little smirk and drive away.
You definitely weren't wrong.

Yes and with twins(as you know) one has already been in the car for 5 mins or so while getting the other strapped in. I was tempted to pull around to her, but it just wasn't worth it. I don't need to justify my decisions to a stranger. I was tempted though, trust me

Re: Shopping Carts and Little Ones in Car
She was watching you obviously, she didn't see you had twins, and that you might need some help with the shopping cart?
I don't understand people have time to judge but not help.
If she had a problem it was all her own.

Re: Shopping Carts and Little Ones in Car
You know I'm starting to build up some public social courage and I just may have rolled my window down and said shame on you lady! Mind your own business. For your information, I have two young babies in the car on the hottest day of the year. I bring my cart back every time otherwise so go shove it and get a hobby! Those snooty organic people!
When I shop with my son, in these summer days, yes, I do leave the cart in the parking lot, exactly where I found it! I circle the lot to park near a stranded cart so I do not have to leave my son to find a cart. My local market is small and does not have cart corrals. There is a very nice employed cart man who has lots of free time to socialize (not a bad thing, he's been there since I'm a kid so everyone knows and loves him) with customers in the store. If I snag the first spot, I do bring it back to the sidewalk that's 20 feet away. Same as if I go to target or another shopping center and the corral is a spot or two away, I'd run. But honestly, in these hot days, nopey nope. Someone is getting paid to tend the parking lot so I can keep my child comfortable.
Now let's wag our fingers at the people who leave their carts in a handicapped space!
Really, this world needs to mind their own business!!!!!

Re: Shopping Carts and Little Ones in Car
On the hot days like yesterday, I usually would use the autostart on the car as I am putting the packages in so it got somewhat cool. Even with that on, I still would not have put the cart back.

Re: Shopping Carts and Little Ones in Car
really? this lady should get a life. you should have put the cart behind her car.
they have people who they pay to get the carts. give me a break. its not a law you have to put the carts in the cart thing. she should have came over and got it from you if it was such a big deal to her.

Thats the difference between NY and NC. I don't really think anyone gives a crap here where you put the cart. For the record, I'd do the same.

I would so ignore her! Your kids come first and I bet if she saw you leaving your kids in this blazing weather and walking out of the way to put the cart away, she probably would have mouthed the same thing. You did the right thing!

Re: Shopping Carts and Little Ones in Car
First of all, you did the right thing.
Second, whether I'm at Trader Joe's or Harris Teeter or Kroger, I almost *always* ask for a walk-out and they are plenty happy to oblige. That way, they take the cart and it's a non issue.
What I do if I'm alone with DD (and I only have one, as you know) is that I start the car as soon as I walk over to it. I unload my groceries with DD still with me, then I put her in, then I stick the cart back. I always park next to the cart return, even if it's a mile away.
As far as that person goes - she saw you struggling -- why the f* didn't she offer to take your cart for you??? I always do that when I see someone with children (or did before I had DD).
Stay cool. It says 103 on my thermometer right now that's on my back porch. This weather is insane.
*ETA: I never, ever would've started my car and just left it running like that when I lived in NY. But in NC I'm totally fine with it (as long as I'm not in a seedy area of Durham or something).

It's amazing how much effort she put into watching - and then judging - you instead of helping you out.

See, my 25 month old son is really bad at holding my hand, and would bolt in the parking lot, so I would do exactly as the OP did. Sounds like Southerners are a bit more anal about this stuff! Too much hot weather!

You did the right thing. I usually return the cart too but if I were in your situation I would have done exactly as you did. Probably would have given the woman the finger as I drove away too

You absolutely did the right thing! I too try to park next to the cart return, but if I couldn't and it was far away and especially this heat, i would put it where i can. oh well.....only I WOULD have clarified to the lady to not ASSUME as to why you left the cart!

I usually try to park by one of those things.
Its not like you were being lazy, you had a valid reason for leaving the cart there. Who cares what she thinks

Surprisingly she was not old, maybe early 40'2 she had a teenager with her who you could tell was embarrassed. I'm not sure how long she had been watching me, but thanks for all the feedback.

Re: Shopping Carts and Little Ones in Car
Hmmm... Maybe this should be a spinoff but I'm surprised (not judging) to see so many of you load groceries first. I'm concerned of a runaway cart with DS in it. My trunk is filled with beach gear and the stroller so during the summer I have to scatter my grocery bags between the front and back seats. So I'd not want to leave DS in the cart while I'm not holding the handle. If I've had a few bags that I could put at his feet, I'd do that but otherwise, I strap him in first. The doors are open so the car's aired out by the time he gets in. We're jugglers us moms I tell ya!

Re: Shopping Carts and Little Ones in Car
Seriously? What a wench that woman is. Honestly, if the wagon corral isn't near my car I don't put the wagon back. Who gives a $hit if it's left in between cars? People managed to live life that way and park their cars for YEARS before a "wagon corral" was ever invented so that lady needs to get over it!

Re: Shopping Carts and Little Ones in Car
I would have given her the finger as well as said something to her. I have no patience for stupid people.
What I've been doing is use my electric starter as soon as i leave a store so my car is cool before i even get to it. then i ALWAYS put the kids in FIRST--I would not leave them in the hot sun while I'm packing my groceries just so I can return the cart. No way!!
I then lock the car with my remote (car is still running with the AC) and then bring back the cart. Go back to the car, unlock the doors and go. Sometimes I do leave the cart where it is, it all depends
