Should chocolate mousse filling be a concern for son's first birthday cake?
I thought I had it all picked out, I was going to go with Chocolate mousse with his vanilla cake and then my mom says not to because he never had anything chocolate and he could have a reaction.
My pediatrician told me to hold off on nuts, fish and chocolate....I'm wondering if I can get away with giving him a little chocolate on his birthday.
Should I not do anything chocolate??? What filling did you have?

I think the best part of being one is indulging in a little chocolate...my dd had a cupcake with chocolate frosting and she was just fine....and dirty !!!

Re: Should chocolate mousse filling be a concern for son's first birthday cake?
I did chocolate mousse for the 1st birthday since I had a lot of kids and figured most kids eat that. I just gave my DS a couple chocolate cookies a week before his party to make sure we had no allergic reactions....just in case. I think chocolate is ok after a year or per my ped - so what is a few weeks earlier??? esp if no family history of allergies...wound up my DS didn't like the cookies or the cake so didn't eat much of either and I didn't get the cute messy cake face birthday pictures - he wouldn't touch his cake !

I made DS chocolate cake for his first birthday and he had no issues with it.
To be honest, my ped never said anything about not giving him chocolate!

I've never heard the no-chocolate rule either, although DD does not like sweets. I couldn't get her to even touch her b-day cake either.
She does NOT take after me I ate the cake

My ped told me chocolate was okay- not sure why it was on your peds no no list - they must have a reason. If you go ahead with it you might want to make sure that you give him chocolate before that time so he doesn't have a reaction on his bday - or you can do what we did and get a smash cake - I gave DD a vanilla smash cake with whip cream frosting so she had her own cake and could of it what she pleased - then it didn't matter as much - but I did give her a taste of the other cake.
