should i have kept my mouth shut?

My MIL is AWESOME and bought a bunch of diapers and wipes - she gets them when she sees a sale or a coupon. But here is the thing, I am planning on using all natural products like seventh generation.

I am totally not the crunchy granola type BUT I really love these products and I was actually allergic to diapers when I was a baby - my mom had to use the cloth ones. So, I just emailed my MIL and said:

"Oh hey if you see any sales for Seventh Generation please let me know b/c I really wanted to use all natural products for the baby!"

Now, I feel terrible but I didn't want her to keep buying the regular ones and I never use them. . .

Should I just have been grateful and kept my mouth shut?

Also, does ANYONE just use any random diaper brand after the baby is born? I thought that was something you kind of stick with - she just keeps buying all different kinds, I didnt know people did that?

I have no idea, but this is such a great question. I'm in the same boat. Thank you for asking!

I warned DH if his mother buys anything for the baby I would scrutinize it as much as if I where buying it myself. And to please prepare her not to be offended if I don't actually use anything she gets us.

Different diapers work for different babies. To be honest I wouldn't have her buy any more at all, you have no idea how big/small the baby is going to be (I hope she's not stocking up on NB size) and what brand will be best for leaks/irritation/sizing for your baby. If you want to use 7th G, then I don't think you should feel bad for letting her know. This way she's not wasting her money anymore becuase unless she's keeping the receipts, if you don't use them they're wasted...unless you have a friend who uses them or you want to donate them.

Re: should i have kept my mouth shut?

I'm not a huge fan on stocking up on diapers/wipes at all. Like another poster said, you have no idea what will work for your baby. DD leaked out of every Huggies I ever bought, so she uses Pampers during the day, yet the Huggies Overnight are awesome! You have no idea how the fit will be, if there will be allergy issues, etc.

I am brand loyal, but not everyone is, and you have no idea if the brand you want to use will even work.

That being said, it's great that your MIL is excited! I don't see anything wrong with what you said, you just told her to keep an eye out for what you prefer.

Re: should i have kept my mouth shut?

I wouldnt feel bad about telling her what brand you want to use. It seems like you did it in a pretty tactful way. It is cute that she is going out of her way to stock up on these things I am sure she probably didnt even think about the fact that there might be a certain brand you want to use. BUT...like other girls said, you probably wont really know what brand/sizes you will need till after the baby is born. I would definately stock up on SOME before baby is born, but maybe tell her not to go too crazy.

It's also funny you mentioned this b/c my MIL actually asked me what brand I was planning on using b/c she would probabbly buy us some diapers....to tell you the truth I really had no clue. I figured I would give pampers a try since a lot of people seem to like them, but it's true...they might not even be great for my baby!

Re: should i have kept my mouth shut?

I think your MIL is just trying to help out. You did the right thing by saying something nicely. There is no reason for her to waste money if you do not plan to use it.

With DD #1 I had to stick with Pampers because they were the only ones that worked for her but we tried all different kinds even the organic ones.

Many people switch off diaper brands. Some to find one that works for them and the baby others because their child has no issue with any diapers and they want to save money.

Thanks for the responses!

I figured that some may just flat out not work for the baby - but I didnt want to say that to her b/c I thought she would know that LOL

I am going to buy a few packages of the ones I want to try now and who knows? Maybe they won't even work for us and then some of hers will come in handy! Just as long as she doesn't try to buy us a lifetime supply LOL

You could also add the seventh generation ones to your registry and who knows maybe people will buy them for your shower. I know some people really like to buy diapers, this way you wont have to buy them yourself.

Thanks! I did, but they are ALL out of stock LOL but I figured people would know that was the brand I wanted and maybe go get them somewhere else. I am sure they are cheaper at other places

Re: should i have kept my mouth shut?

With my first I wanted to find the "perfect diaper" and I bought every kind out there to try it! I love 7th generation and a few others but the one that works the best for DC now is pampers cruisers. For every stage I found the "perfect one" It was hard for me to stick with 1 kind.
You'll see what works best one the baby is here. I wouldn't give them away just yet...Chat Icon

Oh no definitely not!! I wil keep them but she keeps telling me I have to come see what she got so I am nervous that she got enough to possibly build a second home out of diapers! Chat Icon

I think you did her a favor honestly - and I agree, don't let her buy any more diapers unless there is someone else she can give them to because you don't know how big your baby will be OR how fast they will grow!

Re: should i have kept my mouth shut?

I used all diff. kinds bc ppl bought me pampers swaddlers, baby dry, 7th generation, luvs, huggies etc. My Fave is luvs bc they are the cheapest. Diapers are the last thing I would want to spend my money on! they poop in it, doesn't matter. unless your child has ubersensitive skin, which is probably pretty rare

Re: should i have kept my mouth shut?

i dont think you did anything wrong.

i think it would hurt your mil more if she found out later on that you werent using what she bought you. if she is willing to spend the money - it might as well be spent on the things you want.

i wouldnt worry. i dont think you were rude.

Re: should i have kept my mouth shut?

Diapers & formula are the one items I won't be stocking up on.

You can't be certain they will work for your baby. My cousin stocked up on Huggies for her DD, turns out she hated them (my cousin) & she had trouble returning the unopened ones & had to take a hit in the wallet for all of them.

Just tell her you don't know which ones you'll be using just yet.
