Should I start nursing school in the fall or spring semester?
I am pregnant and due in early October. I was accepted into Molloy and Adelphi for the fall. Molloy is my first choice, but I don't think they start classes in January (I may be wrong)
I am wondering if it is at all possible to start my first semester 9 months pregnant, take a week off, and return without falling extremely behind. Would you start in the fall or spring semester? I need to reserve my spot for Molloy very soon if I decide to go in the fall.

First, contact Molloy and ask them when their program begins and if you choose to go in the Spring, is that okay? I know for certain programs, you have to start in the Fall. Others you don't.
SO first, find out when your particular program begins including your clinicals.
Next, if you can go after the baby is born, I'd go then. Being 9 months pregnant, things can arise, the baby can be born early and you might miss a significant amount of work. You might be overly tired, and drained being 9 months pregnant and going to school. Also, this would give you the chance to bond with your baby before you begin your academic career.
I had class with a woman who was pregnant with twins, and she said she wish she had waited, she missed her field work and classes for over two weeks.
Some professors may or may not be understanding to this situation. IMO, I'd wait for the Spring and then go to school.
If you can't wait, then start in the Fall. Molloy is a great school and IMO I'd chose that too. I attended and graduated from Adelphi University.
Best of luck!

Thank you for the advice! I know logically that it's in my best interests to wait. I'm just so excited about finally starting that I just want to do it NOW, lol. I also have a good group of fellow students who I've taken all of my prereqs with who will be moving on to Molloy without me this fall. I think that scares me too, to lose my study group.

I would start after the baby is born. You are going to be tired with the new baby and will have a hard time concentrating as well as missing even one class is going to set you behind. If the baby is born in October and you start in January, that will give you time to make arrangements for when you have to be at school, study time and for clinicals the next semester. The good part is, you don't usually have clinicals the first semester anyway, but second semester you will. There are no excused absences for those, no matter what the reason unless you are literally hospitalized, so having rock solid childcare plans are going to be needed. Good luck!!

I totally get that you want to start sooner rather than later, but you only get one chance, and if for some reason you fall behind and fail, you can get kicked out of the program. Remember passing in nursing school is a B and higher, its better to wait and get good grades than to rush and fail out. Not saying you will fail out just because you have a newborn, but there is so much studying involved that one cannot cram and pass.

Thank you! I made the decision to wait. I've worked so hard to maintain a 4.0 to transfer into nursing school with, the last thing I want is to fail out of the program because I was impatient. Thank you for the advice.

I would start later but can you get a jump start now on required reading & coursework, on your own?

Having those extra few months to prepare are going to make a world of difference and you will be so happy that you took them instead of cramming and being more sleep deprived than one already would be with a newborn! Kerie mentioned something about reading ahead of time, I guess you can but until you know what your particular teacher focuses on and how the class runs, it is going to be difficult. Not sure what the curriculum is for first semester, in my program human development was first semester and believe it or not a lot of people failed out simply because of the huge amount of information from birth to very old age. The material itself in that class is not difficult, its just a lot of information. I definitely did have questions on my boards regarding child development, and the yearly mandatory education modules at work also test on these topics too. Make flash cards with birth to very old age and study things like Ericcson, Freud, milestones of children and adults. Check the website of the bookstore of the school and see what books the first semester classes are that you would be taking. Don't worry about the med/surg or pharm books yet, just start with the basics.
Just for starters, a board question regarding child development would be something like this:
18. The nurse is observing children playing in the hospital playroom. She would expect to see 4 year-old children playing
a. Competitive board games with older children b. With their own toys along side with other children c. Alone with hand held computer games d. Cooperatively with other preschoolers
Remember too, in NCLEX world, chiildren develop as the textbooks do, don't use real life comparison as "real world" children develop much faster, the teachers tell you to avoid that pitfall.

Re: Should I start nursing school in the fall or spring semester?
I just graduated nursing school. I would find out if they have clinicals. I would not miss a day of clinical. If clinicals start first semester I would wait. Otherwise, I would start in the fall.
