Kid's that are starting school in the fall?
How are you dealing with this? My two will be starting at the same time and taking the bus and I am a mess over this.
DH thinks I am nutso but I am very nervous about the whole thing. I am fine with them being in preschool and going to the sitter during the day, I have always worked full time, so it is not about be not wanting them to be away from me, I just worry that there is so much less supervision.
The bus is freaking me out the most. How can a bus driver really be responsible for all those kids at that age. At least my 2 will have each other, but still it freaks me out.

I felt the same way when my kids took the bus.
I wanted to fingerprint, background check & stalk the bus driver.

I know my school does that, but I am thinking of taking on a part itme job as the bus driver or even putting hidden cameras on the kids. The fact that I won't know what the hell they are doing for 8 hours a day is mind blowing to me.
It is so odd to me that I am feeling this way because I never felt like this for day care, sitter or pre school.

They will get to sit in the front so maybe that will make you feel better.

Oh great, so they will be closer to flying out the front windshield.
But seriously, that does help. I do know that they seem to keep the kindergarden kids seperate from the rest of the classes once they get to school so I feel good about that I was just picturing them sitting next to 5th graders. I never took the bus to HS so I don't know how the bus works for the younger kids.

Mine is not taking the bus, it is easier for me to drop her off at school and then go to work. I AM however freaking out over the after care scenario. She is so tiny and there are so many kids

Awww...no. In my experience, it is the K, 1st, 2nd, etc. until the 5th graders in the back. I have done this twice so I know how you feel. They will be fine (you might not be) but they will--

Re: Kid's that are starting school in the fall?
I would like to drop them off but DH is against it. He thinks I am babying them. It would also cause me to be late for work probably since I believe they pick up before I would drop them off. I also have not been on time once for prek this year, so I can't imagine I would do a complete turn around for K. The bus stop is at my corner too, so I don't even have to leave my porch.
I didn't even realize they had aftercare, they don't seperate the kids into age groups?

From my experience with after-care, they separate the kids and/or the kids separate themselves. In my school they help the Kindergarteners with their homework also. My kids were always with their friends and kids their own age.

Thanks, I think part of my issue is that they are both doing this at the same time. I am done with having babies and even toddlers. I will go from having to preschools to 2 school aged kids in one day. If I could just hold one of them back I might be better with this entire thing.

Re: Kid's that are starting school in the fall?
Luckily ours is half day Kindy so I feel like we can both ease into it. And we are too close for the bus and our teacher doesn't do field trips so I don't have to worry about the bus yet. Last week all the incoming kindergateners took a ride around the neighborhood in one and I was really anxious until I saw them come back to the school.
I'm sure that when we get the supply list I'll be sobbing.

Re: Kid's that are starting school in the fall?
I feel the same
I am a SAHM, DS goes to pre-k 3x a week ( 4 hours a day) so this is going to be a huge adjustment for me...As much as he sometimes makes me crazy, I am really going to miss him all day...
The only thing getting me through this , is the fact that he is so excited to ride the bus with his little friends from our block ...
I can count on one hand how many times he has been in someone else's car aside from mine and DH's

I got my supply list when I registered her for K. We live on the school block so her taking the bus would be more of an inconvenience, and she is not really asking to go on it

I am freaking about the bus too. There are no other elementary kids on our street so she will have to get on all by herself. At least by the time my DS gets there, my DD will be on the bus with him.

I was the same way when DS started K. I took off the first day - "just in case" He absolutely loved it, the bus was the best part.

Re: Kid's that are starting school in the fall?
I always feel so left out of the mommy loop regarding this. I'm completely desensitized after teaching kindergarten for 12 years.
I know the bus isn't hell or purgatory and that even the aprehensive kids end up loving kindergarten. It's the mommies who shake and cry until about Thanksgiving!
I'm sending my baby, who screamed and carried on throughout his 2 and 3 year old preschool experiences, off on the bus for the first time in September. Instead of shedding tears of bittersweet saddness as my baby goes to big boy school, I'll be shedding tears of joy because he is going willingly and I'll be saving about a grand a month on before care, after care and preschool!
I know, I know... I'm a freak!

I am nervous, since Melanie doesn't really stand up for herself when she's bullied the way my older DD does. Luckily, she will be with her big sister so I don't feel too bad.

We got the supply list at orientation and what a list just for kindergarten. I will be spending 50 bucks on crayons alone, LOL. I told DH we should buy stock in Crayola.

Re: Kid's that are starting school in the fall?
Katherine is starting kindergarten in the fall too. I am really not too emotional about it for a couple of reasons. First, she's in Catholic school, so she started this past year for Pre-K. Also, she's already going full-time. Lastly, I walk her to and from school, so she doesn't need to take the bus except for field trips...and I think there are only two of those.
In fact, I sort of wish a bus would take her to and from because the school is a long two block walk for us and you can't park on the block of the school, so when it's raining, snowing, icy, etc. Guess who's schlepping this year with a 4 year old AND a 2 (and now just turned 3) year old? Next year will be even crazier since in October, I'll have baby #3!!
I am a little sad thinking about her leaving her current teacher though and I KNOW I'll be a mess for the stepping up ceremony next month. I'm already emotional about that one!

J,
Not a freak at all, I'll be doing the happy dance when I write my last pre-school payment but oh wait, I have a son entering college. I just worry about her because she is a tiny one and has been with the same friends for the past 3 years

I am thrilled about that part. I am also thrilled for us that my DH will get a nap in after work before they come home, but once I registered them, it hit me. I love the extra cash, I was so looking forward to that, but I guess I just feel like they are not babies anymore and it makes me feel like I will blink and they will be going off to college. I want to stunt there growth and keep them this age forever. This has really been my favorite age for them so far, they are independent but still need me, they can have conversations, you can have fun and we have a great time together.

Re: Kid's that are starting school in the fall?
Nate is starting Kindergarten in Sept. At this point we aren't really worried about anything. We were so stressed about the long enrollment process that started in October of last year. Getting your kid into 'good' public school in Chicago is so competitive and unnecessarily complicated. Even if the child tested high enough to get into a gifted program, there is no guarantee that they will get an offer. We were so relieved when we got acceptance into one of the gifted programs, it wasn't our top 3 choice but we took it.
We registered him last week and got his summer reading list and uniform info. He's totally excited about going to a new school. We'll be driving him to/from school so we won't have to worry about him catching a bus.

I'm pretty excited about it. I love when he comes home and tells me something he learned.
Maybe I'm desensitized as well from being in the schools.

M - that's a great way not to feel the tuition bill! go from preschool to college! It seems like preschool costs the same as college anyway!

Maybe if I got an answer other then I don't know or we did nothing, I might be more comfortable with it. I even start to ask them stupid stuff and they are all I don't know and we did nothing, it was bad, etc.

Re: Kid's that are starting school in the fall?
Michelle, I have this list of questions that you can ask to elicit detailed responses from kids about what happens at school. I used to give it to my kindergarten parents at the beginning of the school year. I'm going to scan or retype it for you. I think it will help!!
