Should skinny models be BANNED?
"SUPER-SKINNY MODELS BANNED IN EUROPE!
During NYC's Fashion Week in mid-September, normally blasé couture vets watched in horror as model after model paraded down the runway sporting sharply jutting leg bones, protruding ribs, shrunken chests and emaciated faces! In response to this exploding trend, organizers of Madrid's Fashion Week took a strong stance, banning all models with a body-mass index below 18 (122 to 125 pounds on a 5'9" woman) from the city's runways.
But, shockingly, many international style leaders are blasting the potentially lifesaving move! "Absolutely no! We are not going to regulate tastes," Didier Grumbach, the organizer of Paris' Fashion Week, told Star when asked about instituting a similar ban. And one NYC fashion vet insists, "There's no way a ban like that would work in New York!"
Adds Kelly Cutrone, owner of the fashion show production company People's Revolution, "It's a sad little thing, but clothes look better on thin models!"
Read more about it and check out Hollywood's Bone Brigade in this week's issue of Star."

No, I do not think they should be banned. All sizes should be represented.

Re: Should skinny models be BANNED?
i dont think it should be banned but it would be nice to see clothing on different size models so u can see how the clothes would look in real life rather then on a stick

Re: Should skinny models be BANNED?
I think all sizes should be represented, because there are women out there who are naturally very thin and that can't be helped. But they should have regular sized women out there too.

I agree! Some of us arent a 0 or a 2 and would like to see what a dress or pants looks like on someone that is a size 10 or 12

Re: Should skinny models be BANNED?
I don't think it will make a difference. I think the change they are proposing isn't going to put a wider variety of sizes on the runway anyway. 122 lbs on someone who is 5'9" is still pretty thin, IMO.

While i do believe that all sizes should be represented, in this industry- without a ban, that will never happen. The models will always be skinny.

Re: Should skinny models be BANNED?
Absolutely!
I'm a little surprised how many people are voting no.
While I do think that all sizes should be represented, we all know that'll never happen.
I see nothing wrong with banning what would be considered a dangerously unhealthy BMI. I don't know if the number they chose is that number, but that's what I would agree with.

No. I don't think that is right. According to the sizes and weights posted, I guess I should be banned from walking the streets then too. Everybody is different, big boned, small boned, fast metabolism, etc, it is not fair to label people and ban them when it may not be their fault that they weigh what they do.

On the contrary, should heavy-set models be banned as well? It is equally unhealthy to have an unusually high BMI. JMHO

Re: Should skinny models be BANNED?
I think the only way to make a change to the view that "heroin chic" is a desirable look is to do something extreme. Which they did, banning models that are unhealthily thin.
Emaciated women should not be the norm, is what I'm saying. It wasn't always like this but as the view of beauty changes, so do the model's bodies because they have to conform to what their employers want.
If the employers make a stand to say it's ok to have SOME curves and SOME body fat, then that's a good start. I don't know if it will continue, but you never know if something is going to work until you try it.

I agree here......and for some reason I feel that people are more offended by someone saying well if you are too big then you should be excluded....

Re: Should skinny models be BANNED?
ladies, these women are below what is even "naturally" thin.
there is a difference between being naturally "thin" and emaciated. no muscle...nothing. literal skin and bone.
anything under 18 (BMI) is considered unhealthy by doctors and causes many health risks.
I think HEALTHY bodies of all sizes should be represented.

I think thats dumb...
HOWEVER... I would also like to point out that it annoys the CRAP out of me when they talk about "plus sized" models that are size 12! Plus size's don't start till 14 anyway
Don't know what that had to do with this thread but I needed to get that out

I agree too, the only thing in my recent life that has increased my BMI is an unhealthy condition that made me gain a ton of weight. Prior to getting ill, I was 5'8" and 118, and trust me I was so NOT Skeletal. I had hips & a butt. I think the over-generalization is the danger.

in reality, this is all of our faults. we have become a society that values one "kind" of beauty at a time. right now, thinner = more beautiful, whether we care to admit it or not. they show smaller women b/c whether or not we are that size, we want to THINK we can and will look like the model too in the same outfit.

I see what you are saying... But when you go past the lane bryant store and you see all these thinner models modeling their clothes it doesn't make you fell good...
They always talk about Mia Tyler and how she is not like her sister and she is a plus size model she is a size 12 damnit! She can't even shop in lane bryant!

Re: Should skinny models be BANNED?
I think there is such a thing as naturally thin (in which MANY women are healthy and have a BMI under 18) and unnaturally thin (alot of models). I think 18 is a little high for them to use as the cutoff, because there are many women who have BMIs in that area who are quite healthy. Maybe a 15 would be better.
In theory it is a nice idea - in that it might help models lead healthier life styles. Like last’s month incident when Luisel Ramos, a 22-year-old model from Uruguay, reportedly died of heart failure on the stage, during Fashion Week in Montevideo. SHe only made it big after surviving solely on diet coke and leafy greens for months.
But at the same time it punishes the naturally very thin models. I am torn.

Re: Should skinny models be BANNED?
I'm all for showing all different shapes and sizes, but I am not for skeletons on the runway. There is nothing appealing to me about that. Maybe that is why girls have distorted body images and most women are constantly on diets. What are we trying to portray to young women? That you should look like Nicole Richie or Kate Bosworth? That in order to be beautiful you should have your ribs showing? I'm sorry but you can tell the difference between being naturally thin and being sickly thin. I think models were sexier back in the day. Now they just disgust me.

When I see models that can't fill out an outfit, I don't see how that's good for the outfit. I watch Project Runway and they design these plunging necklines and I wonder why? Isn't that supposed to accentuate a woman's breasts? They don't have any!
