Sign of an ear infection?-please help

DS got a cold nearly 2 weeks ago. He seemed to be getting a bit better, but he's still been so stuffy that he has trouble breathing while eating. He is also teething.

Now he's been pulling on his ear all day. His temp is only 99.3 right now. Should I be concerned he might be getting an ear infection or is ear pulling a teething thing? He's 5 1/2 months old. TIA! Chat Icon

when I asked my Ped she told me that the ear pulling can be a sign of an ear infection, but also could be DC trying to soothe themself. Also, the teething can cause them to try & pull on their ears. If the temp goes over 100.4 then call the Ped (well this is what my Ped recommends).

we've had two double ear infections, and both times he was up almost all night screaming inconsolably. that's how we knew it wasn't teething. He also ran a fever higher than what your DC's is, however, pulling ears is def a sign so if you aren't sure it may be worth a trip to the ped or at least a call.

I think it's worth a trip to the ped to rule out an ear infection. You'd hate to think that DS is just irritable from teething and then find out days later that it was an ear infection.

Re: Sign of an ear infection?-please help

we've got the same thing going on over here...lots of ear pulling, both ears and a cold and a fever Chat Icon We just got back from our trip and I'm wondering if she got something from too much water in the ear...that's why she's pulling. But she's sleeping SO much, so I also think she could be cutting another tooth.

If she still has the fever tomorrow than I'm calling the PED.

Like the others said...I'd call just to make sure. Ear infections are NO fun.

Hope your little one feels better Chat Icon Chat Icon

it could just be teething but it also could be an ear infection. I'd bring him to the ped. just to be on the safe side. And if it is you'd be better off getting him on antibiotics sooner rather than later. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Caden had an ear infection and he showed no signs what so ever..not even a fever or anything. I would probably take him to the ped just in case...if for nothing else it will ease your mind.

My son has had numerous ear infections, but never really showed any symptoms - not even a fever. I would go to the ped. just to be safe, the last thing you want is an untreated ear infection that can cause scarringn or other problems.

Abigail was the same way. She showed no signs of an ear infection.

I would say to take him to the doctor just to be safe.
