how long does it take to get a mortgage after the contract is signed?

I think it depends on how backed up the bank is. Astoria told me today that it would take about 1 week.
ETA: 1 week to get approved for a mortgage and then 3-4 more weeks to close.

it depends on the bank and if there is a PMI company involved. With all that is going on with the economy and ank regulations it may take longer than "normal".
Mine took forever and we were very desireable buyers (high credit scores, low debt to income, large downpayment) - but it still took forever. Their excuse was so many bank employees were let go and the backup was huge. It was frustrating for both us and the seller.
