Silly, random post birth question....
WHY do the offer coffee/tea on the hospital menu if we are not supposed to have caffeine?
WHY do the prescribe Vicodin as a pain killer--isn't it a narcotic? Why would they give that to a nursing mother???

Re: Silly, random post birth question....
B/c not everyone nurses. My DH brought me a GIANT iced coffee the morning after DS was born.
And I thought they give perocets more often to mothers who are nursing....although I will say I had a vaginal birth with a 2nd degree tear and I only got motrin and I was NOT nursing.

Re: Silly, random post birth question....
Their was a list of drugs my doc OK'd if I needed them while I was in the hospital and I was nursing. Also, I think it is more controlled in a hospital setting. I know when I asked for my motrin every 4 hours I always had to tell them what level the pain was from 1-10 (that was annoying so I just usually didn't ask until it was bad). Also, like PP not everyone nurses.

Ditto for me. I was taking percosets (sp?) in the hospital - BUT I was hooked up to my epidural for 2 days after my c/s. They told me to "hit the button to make it work." So I hit the button more than I should have because I didn't understand what they meant... I was probably still loopy from all the drugs I was persuaded to have during the c/s.
I was nursing as well. It was only when I left the hospital that it hit me how many drugs I was taking while nursing.

Re: Silly, random post birth question....
I drank coffee thru my entire pregnancy. My OB said it was ok to have one cup a day.
And there are some pain killers that are ok to take while nursing....although I wouldn't take it if I didn't need it.

Re: Silly, random post birth question....
I am nursing. Gladly took the percocet after my c-section. I also happily ordered the coffee every morning

This was me, too. I was told that having a cup of coffee everyday was perfectly fine during pregnancy and nursing, and I was given percocet every four hours and was told it was fine for nursing mothers, too. Granted they didn't give me like a 3 month supply, but enough until I started to heal. I think a month's worth, and I don't even think I took a week's worth.

Re: Silly, random post birth question....
I didn't have any pain killers, but I had coffee the morning after DS was born and he was exclusively breastfed. I drank small amounts of caffeine and it didn't seem to affect him.

Re: Silly, random post birth question....
I asked for caffeine free tea (although there is still some caffeine left in it).
I always asked if anything I took was safe for BFing.
