silverware in the dishwasher... placed up or down?
I always used to put everything face down but since DH told me to do the opposite I don't find them coming out clean for some reason. What do you do?

Re: silverware in the dishwasher... placed up or down?
Everything face up, but the knives face down...My silverware holder is on the door of the dishwasher, does that make a difference?

I do both. I actually move the tray off the door into the bottom rack. I notice they clean better there.

My basket is also on the door. I put everything face down. I just think it is better than poking myself taking them out.

Silly as it sounds........I wash my hands before I empty the dishwasher anyway kinda for that reason. I cant touch my clean dishes/silverware w/ hands that havent been washed in a while. LOL
And all silverware faces up except knives. I used to do face down but I ended up manually washing them b/c one always had dried food on it. Face up, I dont come across that problem.

I understand where they are coming from.
I guess it depends on how everybody's flatware basket is designed. Mine isn't very deep, so I can grab "the neck" of the flatware in bunches.
I just found in my past experience that the flatware didn't get clean when placed face down. I always felt leftover food was more likely to get trapped in the basket since the tines & bowls took up more space than the handles. The food was more likely to be pressure-washed off when they were "heads up".

Re: silverware in the dishwasher... placed up or down?
We have a basket on bottom shelf. All utensils (except for serving spoons, spatulas, etc) are facing down. Keeps sharp blades and tines away from your hands. Hands stay cleaner putting dirty dishes in. Dirty food doesn't slide down the handle, and possibly make the entire utensil dirty. Since the knives and forks are face down for safety reasons, it just makes sense to have everything face the same way.
Bigger items are face up, mainly because they won't fit if they are bowl-side down.

Everything face down. I've poked my fingers on the fork tongs and decided that is no fun!

Down for this reason. I don't want to touch what will ultimately be put in someones mouth.
