Since a lot of your DHs are police officers...
I have a question for you.
What would be a nice Christmas gift for someone who is graduating from the academy later on this month? Maybe something they would get a lot of use out of?
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

If he doesn't already have one - a nice GPS system.
When my brother graduated from Nassau he didn't know the area he would be working in very well at all. He wanted to be able to just plug in the info on a call real quick and have it assist him in getting there. As time went on, it really helped him get acclimated with his precinct because he could use it to find places to eat or anything also. He used it for a lot of other things aside from work too which was cool.
A Gift Certificate to GAUL'S or a catalog/website similar to that would be great -- Kenneth bought himself REALLY quality boots that they have to wear. He was always looking in that catalog for something and would get so excited at the stuff they sell -- not just quality stuff but stuff to make working on the job easier. He would buy the cotton stuff a lot for under the uniform because what they give you is polyester and would aggrivate his skin.
Hmm trying to think of what else?? A really nice pen to keep on their uniform - even if just for show - they usually keep one in their top pocket. A gift card to Starbucks haha Kenneth said the one thing that helped a lot - especially on nights - was drinking coffee. The Syosset Starbucks got so used to seeing him that they sent us a gift basket with a card when he got hurt!
Hope that helps - if I think of anything else I will add it.

Re: Since a lot of your DHs are police officers...
My brother asked for gcs to police stores because he had to buy his uniform and some other stuff himself. A gun safe for his off duty piece. My mom bought him the off duty gun. Thermal underwear b/c he was on foot patrol for a while.
Just remembered that DH & I gave him a really good flashlight that he wanted and extra batteries and the quick charge thing for the batteries. It sounds stupid, but the flashlight alone was over $100.

Re: Since a lot of your DHs are police officers...
for stocking stuffers...hand warmers are good...most likely a new graduate will be stuck on a foot post -- and its COLD out there....any type of thermals are nice too....thick socks and such.
good handcuffs and a special extended handcuff key are great too. (it looks almost like a little pen--and allows them to double lock or unlock handcuffs easier) -- the cuffs they give you at the academy are okay--but my DH prefers his smith & wesson cuffs--either way they should have at least 2 sets on them, so an extra set is good.
a GC to any "buff store" or cop shop is good too--there's a good one in massapequa.

Yes! Great suggestions - you are right, the stuff can be so expensive for something so "simple" like a flashlight. I forgot about the safe - my brother has a really nice one that you need both a password AND fingerprint for... especially useful if the officer has kids. I forgot about the off-duty gun because Kenneth won his in the academy - for getting best all-around shooter but those can get really pricey too!
I didn't realize that some officers have to buy their uniform - where is that? I am almost positive Kenneth didn't have to purchase his basic uniform

If you are on LI, there is one in Massapequa on Broadway.

Re: Since a lot of your DHs are police officers...
My brother is graduating at the end of December.
I just got back from a small police store here in Queens. We got him a 100 dollar gift card for Christmas. We were going to get his flashlight but it was 150.00 and we couldnt swing it right now.
For his graduation though, we are paying for his off duty piece and contributing to his dinner.
I cant believe my baby brother is going to be a cop.

You may not be able to buy gear..ok a flashlight, etc. But not uniforms, etc.
I know when DH graduated, he needed uniforms. At graduation you have to buy the dress blues ahead of time plus the new stuff. But a g/c might be good. Is he NYPD?
www.nypdequipment.com
You may be able to get a g/c.

Re: Since a lot of your DHs are police officers...
Gift cards to a cop shop b/c if he is graduating from the NYPD Academy they have to buy a lot and it is $$$$. DH said he spent a couple thousand on stuff he needed after the academy...it's not like Nassau and Suffolk. They dont give you everything for free.
ETA: I dont know that you will be able to buy him a lot of what he needs b/c your not a cop. You have to show police ID.

check out galls.com. Or there are 2 stores I can think of in Queens, both are on Jamaica Ave. One is Joe Pauls, the other is Kaye uniforms.

Re: Since a lot of your DHs are police officers...
I agree with galls.com. My dh is a nassau county cop and he loves everything on the galls website or in their catalog. He also got a gps as soon as he graduated. It helped him to get to his calls quicker. If he is NYPD then gps is prob. not a good choice if he is on foot
