Re: Since many of you already went through the wedding process,is having an engagemnt party greedy?
Most of my extended family (aunts, uncles, cousins) had not met my DH's mother or family and it was a nice time for everyone to meet and celebrate. I enjoy engagement parties and do not see them as greedy at all.

Re: Since many of you already went through the wedding process,is having an engagemnt party greedy?
I'm still getting past the "americanized" remark...some people...
I did not have one, but would have loved to and have our families meet formally then, not months later.
Something you're going to have to remember in this process of planning a wedding...it's your day...YOUR day (ok, and also FH, but we REALLY know it's the bride's day) and you guys have to do whatever makes you happy. Don't stress yourself out wondering what people are going to think about engagement parties, dresses, color schemes, etc...to heck with all of them!!
Congratulations, and enjoy your engagement party without an iota of guilt.

I do not mind going to e-parties, but in my family we don't have them so for my wedding it was no different. If people wanted to send gifts, they did...Our families had met-MANY times over and have even shared holidays-actually we had Christmas Eve together the day after our engagement-

Re: Since many of you already went through the wedding process,is having an engagemnt party greedy?
I don't think it's greedy, I think it's a great way to celebrate you being together.....
We didn't plan on having one but my sister, mom and dad threw us a surprise "engagement BBQ" and I couldn't have been happier. She put on the invitations no gifts just bring pictures of Beth and Ken when they were younger.....it was a great idea and it was so nice to celebrate our love together with everyone.

Re: Since many of you already went through the wedding process,is having an engagemnt party greedy?
Not at all greedy (especially with longer engagements). We opted to not have one bc we wanted to take the $$ we would have spent on a party & put it to our wedding. However we did do a BBQ w/immediate family after we got engaged...

Personally, we did not have one because we felt it was asking to much of people. It's really a personal decision though.

Re: Since many of you already went through the wedding process,is having an engagemnt party greedy?
We had an engagement party. As an Armenian, the "purpose" of the e-party is for the priest to come and bless the ring. There was a small ceremony and party in my backyard. My DH's family is from Chicago and this was the first time our families had met.....otherwise, it would've been at the rehearsal!!!

Jessica- if you are worried that FH's family would think you guys are being greedy, you could always put something like: Your presence is your present.
I like e-parties, I think they're good for long engagements and having the families meet eachother if they haven't already.

It's not greedy. Traditionally eparties are for both families to meet.

If you have a backyard affair to have the families meet its one thing - but ive been to engagement parties that have DJ's, favors, a "first dance" mother/son dances, etc...its basically like a Mini wedding and I dont see the point!
But, in the end, I would do what you want. If you want to have an engagement party so the families can meet, i think its a great idea - just dont go too crazy, thats what the wedding is for!
I agree!!

I don't think they are greedy - but I don't think they are necessary either.

Re: Since many of you already went through the wedding process,is having an engagemnt party greedy?
i do not think they are greedy. however, i do know why people think they are.
people say it is like asking for help to pay for your upcoming wedding, and that is why some people have an e party.
others say it is an excuse for another gift.
we had one to introduce our families and we really didnt care about the gifts!

I had two - my mil threw use one in Massachusetts and then my mom threw us one here in New York and then I had 3 showers and then the wedding. I did not expect to have all this and did not ask for any of it and I felt like the greediest person ever!!!!

Re: Since many of you already went through the wedding process,is having an engagemnt party greedy?
If someone wants to throw a party to celebrate their engagement (or someone they know engagement) that is all fine and good with me, but I really think that if you are having a shower as well you should put on the invitation "no gifts please". JMO. I have been to numerous epartys and then showers and then weddings (and bachelorette parties) for a bride and to me it gets way out of hand and expensive. There was someone in our family that we spent close to $1,000 on all of these and that was even before the wedding gift and we were not even in the wedding party!
We had one that was just immediate families to meet and we requested no gifts. It was at my mom's house and there was a total of maybe 15 people.
ETA = Also a lot of times people include the wedding party members now so they can get to know one another which is a great idea i think.

I don't think they are greedy. I also don't think they should be so formal like at a reception hall bc then people will feel obligated to bring a gift. I didn't have one bc we only had a 9 month engagement.

I think it partially depends on your social circle and partially on timing.
It's common or expected with some people and a gift grab to others.
For me, as long as the events are spaced properly, I think it's fine. I have mentioned before about one of my friends that had an e-party, shower, b-party and wedding within 7 months when her engagement was only 15 months long. E-parties should be closer to the date of engagement then the wedding.
We had friends who got married two months before us, and they had an engagement party, bridal shower, bachelorette/bachelor party, wedding, and now a baby shower and CHRISTENING in the year....
Our circle of friends are sick and tired of the parties and shelling out gifts and cash...and not b/c we're not happy for them and want to give to them, but it's like there's something every other day for them....
So, as Christine stated above, it depends on timing....

I had one with family & the weddding party. Backyard bbq. I loved it.
I say enjoy every minute of your engagement. If this is something you want to do - then go ahead.

Re: Since many of you already went through the wedding process,is having an engagemnt party greedy?
I don't think it is greedy but I feel the same about these as I do with Showers. The person should not have the party for themselves. I feel that it is something that should be thrown for them.
This is just how I feel and am sorry if I offend anyone.

I agree! This is why we had an engagement party.
If you want one, have it. There is always going to be someone that has something to say.

Re: Since many of you already went through the wedding process,is having an engagemnt party greedy?
I think e-parties are great! You only get married once and it is a happy occassion why not give the family more opportunities to celebrate! In my family, I know everyone loves parties because it is a happy reason to bring the whole family together.
Besides, in this day and age, most parties cost wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more than you ever "make" back in gifts so I don't think anyone views it as a fundraiser anymore.
