since Palin is nominated - I feel there is something I need to address...

The term "Soccer mom", "Hockey Mom", or anything of that nature is NOT a compliment to us mothers or women as a population.

Please women (and especially moms) of the world...if you agree with me... honk your minivan horms!!! No...seriously though - its not a compliment at all. It is a stereotype that does nothing for the foward movement of women in our society!!!

I am sure she did it because it is what this society relates to as a stereotype for a good mom that is dedicated to her family...its a government made term that basically groups moms into this sect of society....

although I think it is great that she is using it in that way - I dont believe that the term has 100% positive connotation and I think it rids moms like myself of an identity away from their family.

I am a "soccer mom" - I am dedicated to my family, taking my daughter here and there while having dinner hot on the table - but I contribute SO MUCH MORE to society than that and I don't want to be stripped of that just because I fit under that title - that is what I think it is doing to young american moms!!

I don't have kids yet, so I'm confused. To me "soccer mom" connotes a woman who has chosen to be a stay at home mom (actually, one who is LUCKY enough to make that choice - my DH makes a lot less money than I do and I'll never have that option), and who cares enough about her kids to take care of her home, pay the bills, etc., and at the same time see that they're being enriched after school. Soccer practice, ballet lessons, etc. Pundits are always on tv talking about the power of the "soccer mom" vote; how a candidate can't be elected without it.

I'm not trying to be argumentative; I really don't understand what is offensive about the term.

I HATE the term soccer mom, however when the word is said I do get a picture in my mind. I guess its just another one of those stereotypical terms.

I am sure when she used this phrase it was not just said, I am sure she put a lot of thought into that term trying to target a certain group

I agree, I don't understand the offensiveness about the term(s). I see a "soccer mom" as someone who is completely involved in her family/community, etc. If anything I see it as a positive thing and hope that as I raise my children that I AM that mom!

Re: since Palin is nominated - I feel there is something I need to address...

IMHO it's not a compliment partially because it is stripping away all the other things that we contribute to society. I think it started out as a nice term...but over the years I think the use of it has changed so much.

I actually think it is starting to take on a negative meaning - or people are using it negatively...like...

what does she know, she is just a soccer mom...

it implies we have been taken out of the "Real world" of money, work, politics, etc... just to focus on our families when really...mom or not...we have a lot offer this country!!!

AGAIN - this is just my opinion...I am totally open to others opions...I dont think one is right or wrong. I guess for me I was upset by reading it in the other post (Which is a perfect example of how it can be used in a negative way)

so maybe its the negative use of soccer mom that bugs me!!

I think that happens to women a lot in general, actually.

I can see your point. But I can't imagine someone saying about me, "Oh, what does she know about money or politics? She's a Spanish teacher!" As if I'd only know about Spanish literature. I see "soccer mom" as a profession, you know? Not a term that limits you to what you can do.

But like I said, I'm not a "mom" of any kind yet. And I'm a woman, and one who would love to be a "soccer mom" one day, so that probably factors into it.

I don't hate the term, but I don't like it either. I feel it is reductive in some way. Even the self-proclaimed "Soccer moms" are so much more than that picture.

shes trying to show that shes a mom just like all the other moms and she knows our plight. shes just like every other mom out there. oh puhleeze!!! give me a break. shes pandering to women to garner votes. its insulting and demeaning to every woman. dont tell me about how you are "every woman" tell about your credentials, what experience you have in the political arena and what your views are on diverse subjects. McCain thinks that she will be able to bring over the women who wanted Hillary in office. what he doesnt realize is that these women wanted HILLARY not just any woman. this is going to get ugly very fast.

soccor mom (i think) was created for the moms that drive big suv's with loads of kids and equipment to the soccer field..and they are usually hot moms! and GOOD moms!

why is that a bad thing? the bad part is the environmental imact of all the suvs.

if you want to talk about giving women a bad name, how about "housewives of the OC" etc.. if you want to talk about gold digging useless people

but im not a mom yet so maybe my feelings will change

I agree with this as well. I am a mom and I have no problem being called a soccer mom. I work full time and I have no problem taking my boys to and from any extra curricular activity specifically sports. I play sports with them all the time. They tend to seek me out before my husband. I don't find the phrase offensive at all.
Growing up, I don't remember one mom of any friend of mine actually picking up a mitt and having a catch with her son or daughter. This is something I do everyday with my boys. Call me a soccer mom any day-I have no problem with it.

I agree with you completely Jen. I don't care for the term at all either and it's probably because I don't think that women who stay home get enough credit for all that they actually do. Sometimes it is even fellow working mothers who will devalue what what a "soccer"mom or SAHM actually does.

Thank you for saying this! I wasn't sure where I fit into this discussion which has spread across several threads, but this really says what I feel best. I was an ardent HRC supporter and very disappointed when she lost to Obama. I does not give me comfort or excite me that if McCain dies while in office, this woman will become president. (as suggested in other threads.) IMO, she is not the RIGHT woman for the job.

Sorry to go off of this topic, I just had to respond to this!

I'm a FT working mom, and I would take someone calling me a Soccer Mom as a compliment. To ME, it is a mother who is very involved in her childrens' lives.

I think Palin wants to sell herself as someone just like you and me, hence, a "soccer mom."

While I think most moms are amazing, I don't want to vote for the woman who wants to show herself as being "just like me" because, beyond my mad mom skillz I'm an idiot. Chat Icon

I had no idea the term "soccer mom" was insulting to some.

As others have already said, I think she's trying to convey a "one of the people" likeness and so by referring to herself as a "hockey mom" I think she's trying to make a connection to a very real (very large) voter group in this country.

Re: since Palin is nominated - I feel there is something I need to address...

Eh...I AM a soccer mom. I even refer to myself as such.

To me, soccer mom means a mother who stays home with the kids; makes dinner, cooks, cleans; is on top of their child's schoolwork; brings them to and from all after- school activities/ sporting events/ playdates; very involved in their child's life; and has their family's well-being as her priority.

I'm a soccer mom. And proud of it. Chat Icon

I think I can classify most moms I know as such.

Oh...and my son is on a soccer league as well, so I really am a soccer mom. Chat Icon

It doesn't help women and it's a hokey phrase anyway.

She didn't qualify herself very well. She said she is a hockey mom and she and her DH work with their hands. What does that mean exactly? What did they do before she entered govt.?

I'm with you and I can probably be described as a soccer mom. But, I am also a professional woman (who works PT as a lawyer) and has customized my career around my children's schedules. I think this is a term that minimizes what we as women do and I agree with another poster who said the term was a govt./ public relations pseudo characterization.
