Re: since Palin is nominated - I feel there is something I need to address...

To me, as a sahm, it makes me CRINGE when moms say they went back to work because they want to be a contributing member of society. Yes, I have seen it typed on these boards time and time again.

If that is someone's mindset, then yes, I would take offense to being called a soccer mom.

We have thoughts, degrees, read, life experiences...we are still members of society. We were not banished away to a minivan.

People who work outside the home will ask me all the time, how do I fill my day?
don't I get bored?

no, I am busy living life, only difference is I am not cashing a check.

I will call myself a proud soccer mom, I know first hand what it means and stands for.

I don't think of a Soccer Mom as anything negative.....if anything I associate it with a very busy woman who manages to multi-task very well!

same here.

apparently, she perceives it in a positive way otherwise she would not have said that. so, others can feel differently but she thinks of herself as that - in a good way. i respect how she feels. she seems like a great mom.

I think the difference is she is saying it in a positive light.

Its comments like "she's just a soccer mom" from haters trying to tarnish a good thing.

I dont find it offensive at all. I think its a very positive term in fact. Just b/c someone is dedicating their life to their family doesnt mean they dont contribute anything else to society.
I think being a soccer mom, or hockey mom or baseball mom is showing society how families bond and work together.
To me that is only a positive thing.

Re: since Palin is nominated - I feel there is something I need to address...

The main thing I find questionable about the term soccer Mom is that people have different definitions of what it means and therefore, the image that it conjures up is going to be of a varied nature. It can be an involved mother or mother who has nothing else in her life but picking out juice boxes and shuttling kids around. So to be called a soccer Mom depends on who is saying it and which definition they use. IMO Mothers aren't just defined in one way just because they are Mothers (SAHM or Working Moms alike). They are first and foremost, women. So in that respect, I don't care for the term soccer Mom as a definition of a woman.

This can really be said about anything and the way it is said will determine if it's seen in a positive or negative light.

Yes it would be nice if everyone was at least respectful of other people's choices but unfortunately I don't think that's realistic.

I'm not trying to be argumentative; I really don't understand what is offensive about the term.

I agree, I don't understand the offensiveness about the term(s). I see a "soccer mom" as someone who is completely involved in her family/community, etc. If anything I see it as a positive thing and hope that as I raise my children that I AM that mom!

I don't mind being deemed a Soccer Mom, but I prefer being deemed a MILF.

I've seen her referred to as a hocky mom.

It depends on how it is said & the meaning behind it.

If it means I do nothing all day but schlep my children around to games & live vicariously through them, then I think it's offensive.

If it means I show up on the sidelines to cheer on my son, support the community at the soccer games, then no.
