Single Embryo Transfer vs. Multiple...tell me about your experience

The last time we did IVF we put back two blasts (one hatching) and had DD. I was pretty young back then (28) and the RE mentioned he wouldn't put back more than two.

Fast forward 6 years later and we're back at the game. Transfer is tomorrow and I know they will discuss then how many to put back. I've heard a lot of clinics are now doing single embryo transfer. Obviously this is great because it reduces your chance of multiples (unless of course you really want them) however what are the success rates?

TIA

Well so much for the questionChat Icon. They didn't even give us a choice. At 12:30 today we put back two 4BB blasts. As they RE explained they are very good not the best but very good. They looked perfect to me. Chat Icon

He said there is about a 70% chance of pregnancy with a 30% chance of twins. At this point I will be elated with either.

So now leave it in God's hands and pray that at least one of them becomes my take home baby. Send some prayers my way ladies!!

Single Embryo Transfer vs. Multiple...tell me about your experience

I have no idea what the success rates are and in fact i think they vary per RE office(I could be wrong). I think this is a decision that only you and DH can make as this is a very personal decision. For us it depended on what literally happened that day as we were doing a fresh cycle and what was available. Sometimes there is only one so there is no decision to be made Chat Icon
I think it's best to have a decision ready before you walk in tomorrow(obviously with a back-up plan) ..if you'd like twins then maybe two embies wouldn't be such a bad decision. I'm in my early 30's, transferred 1 embie and now 10w preggo...
All the best!

Re: Single Embryo Transfer vs. Multiple...tell me about your experience

we recentely had a discussion with our RE about this as we will be starting a FET next month. I cant remember what he said the success rates are, but he said that putting back more than one, while it increases your chances, it doesnt increase the chances for each individual embryo. Like if its going to work for embryo A, it'll work regardless of whether or not there is an embryo B there too. hope that makes sense...

He did say a few things that we thought about in order to make up our minds about how many to put back.

(1) there's the financial side - if you put back one, how many more times can you afford to do this.

(2) the emotional side - if this didnt work, how many more times do you want to go through this.

(3) if you put back 2, are you willing to chance having twins. Granted there's always a chance that a single will split into two, but obviously those chances are far less likely.

Good Luck!! I hope all goes well, and that in about 10-12 days you get your BFP!!!!!

I never did a SET but I did put back 2 embryos back in September..I am 35, and my RE said he suggests putting back 2 because 4 years ago, at age 31 I put back 3 and only one took - my now DS Chat Icon So now that I was 35, we put back two for better chances...and...now I am 31 weeks pg with twins! I had a single embryo transfer back in Nov. We only transferred one at the recommendation of my RE. It stuck and I am 18w pregnant.

I know nothing about the success rates but if I were you and I was not ok with having twins or more, I would do an SET.

Re: Single Embryo Transfer vs. Multiple...tell me about your experience

I put back 3 embryos my first IVF and had triplets but it was from 2 embryos (one split) so I had identicals and a singleton.

My other transfers, I always put back two and either had 0, 1, or 2 babies depending on the cycle.

I would not put back 2 unless you are prepared for it. Good luck!

i put back two, got pregnant with two, and ultimately had one baby. for that reason i used to always give the advice to put back two. now that i have a child, i think about a SET next time around, but i think in the end, not knowing the genetic/chromosomal makeup, i would probably again put back two although i wouldnt nearly hope for twins as much as i did the first time around. i think when you don't know what having kids is like and you are struggling to get pregnant, two seems like a great two-for-one idea - but once you have only one, the idea of two seems very scary.

anyway all of that being said, first i think it depends on the quality of your embryos. if you are using frosties from a cycle 6 years ago then id say DEF two cause IVF has come a long way in 6 years. if you did a recent fresh and have lots of great quality 5 day blast and you ABSOLUTELY dont want twins - then i think one is the way to go as long as you are mentally OK with having to do another cycle if it doesnt work.

This is interesting because I have a DD from a fresh cycle 5 years ago. I had but back two and one took. I had 4 left over embies and had a single FET over two years ago and miscarried. Of course then I wished I had put back two. Now fast forward to today, where my 3 left over are over 5 years old. You Flowerwife, have me thinking. Do I use my leftovers and have another FET or start fresh. I wonder what the condition is after 5 years?? Hummmm.....

for the record frozen embies are frozen embies - im sure they have maintained their quality over 5 years. what has changed is meds protocols to develop the eggs, fertilization and freezing techniques which can lead to better quality embies. if you had 5 day perfect blasts frozen i would still be confident in them. if your remaining embies are low or poor quality only, then i would consider another fresh unless you are totally OK with a failed FET and then moving onto a new fresh. Just my opinion. good luck!

First pg, I transferred 3 with my fresh and 3 with fet . I got pg with my 2nd fet and became pg with singleton. With Current pg, I transferred 3 With my fresh and I am carrying a singleton but they did suspect a possible vanishing twin.

The most recent (and best!) freezing technique is vitrification. Once the embryos are thawed, it gives them the same success rate as if you had transferred them fresh. I'd speak to your RE about these concerns to find out how your embryos were frozen and what the quality of them were.
