i have 2 SIL's and 1 BIL. For the most part I try to build a relationship with them for my DH. With one it's pretty easy, we get along and can chat, I see her maybe once every month or so, besides family functions, since I have kids and she doesn't.
With the other SIL and BIL. I've tried to build a relationship with them. I thought since our kids are of similar ages(within a year apart of each) and we live within the same town that we'd become friends and that our kids would grow up together. But boy was I wrong!! Every time I try to get together or to build a relationship they just destroy it by their jealousy of our family. Every time we do something, they always have to try to one up us. But we're not trying to keep count. But it become blatenlty obvious when even people who are not our friends point it out to us. Whatever we do, we see them try to do shortly after it. Whether its having a kid or having a party, or even redoing a room in our house.
It's horrible how bad of a relationship we have with them now, and DH laughs because he's like you never liked my sister to begin with, and you're the one trying so hard for a nice relationship for our kids.
Sometimes you just have to realize that it is just not worth it to really be friends with someone. What me and DH say all the time, we married each other for each other, not for our families and take whatever relationships we get or do not get out of it in stride!

I do. But mine is very difficult with very few friends and most of the family despises her. She's not normal so I don't feel bad. My hubby and her didn't speak for years when he and I started dating.

Before they got married I was always fighting with my sister in law. I even told my brother not to marry her. After 10 years we have both grown up a lot and now have a great relationship.
