Sleep study results in...

So it turns out my child does have sleep apnea; which is probably the direct result of the behavior issues we have been havingChat Icon

Im so glad to have an answer; but now Im faced with a whole new decision to make (removing tonsils and adnoids)

Im not sure, how much it will help; or how much of his behavior will be effected, and I dont see the ENT until next week to discuss it...

Anyone who has been through this; sleep apnea and/or tonsil adnoid removal; any advice is greatly appreciated...

TIA

My daughter (who is now 14) was diagonsed with sleep apena when she was about 5. We weren't having behavior issues, but her snoring was so loud and she was wetting the bed almost every night.

Anyway, the ENT said she had sleep apena and suggested removing the tonsils and all that. Almost immediately I noticed a difference, no more snoring, the bed wetting went away. Best decision I ever made.

Re: Sleep study results in...

MY DS who is now 7 (almost 8) had his tonsils and adnoids out when he was 3 almost 4 years old. And this was due to sleep apnea. And let me tell you, his behavior was night and day before and after.. I was reluctant to do the surgery but what a difference. And the recovery was not as bad as they told me it was going to be either..

I highly recommend having it done. You will not be sorry you did.

Good Luck and if you have any questions please feel free to FM anytime!!!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Crashing b/c my DH had to have this surgery in his 20's b/c no one picked up on it. While he was a great student..he couldn't stay awake while reading b/c he was always sooo tired.. it really affected him b/c he wasn't sleeping well enough. He had everything taken out including his soft pallet (sp) and said it was the best thing he has ever done.
(better when he's young then eventually having to have it done anyway when he's older) Good luck!!Chat Icon

Marissa I'm sorry to hear this news but glad you have some answers.
Can I ask...did you see an ENT first?
Miranda snores and has chronic congestion but the ENT didn't say anything about her adenoids or tonsils.
But OMG her behavior with us is horrendous and I really don't know what to do with the screaming, crying and tantrums.
She's good at school and for other people though.
Who suggested the sleep study?
Was RJ waking up during the night and coming to you or was he appearing to sleep all night?

Ryan wakes like 4 times at night; sometimes he wakes up and walks half way down the hall and lays back down on the floor...it's terrible...

We started school in Sept.; we started with TERRIBLE behavior, tantrums, outbursts, and major hyperactivity in October.... In Nov I was about to lose it and went to the ped for help...

He simply asked Ryan; whats going on? and Rj said "Im tired". Ped said; "lets start there"....

He sent us to an ENT who specializes in sleep; he sent us for the study; and Im assuming he will be the one who sends us for sugrgery (if it comes down to this)

Ryan is a mouth breather and does snore slightly...When I googled "sleep apnea for kids" he literally has every damn symptom...down to the poor weight gain!

There is alot going on for us right now...Things are really stressful; and the poor kid is feeling it Im sure; so for us; I dont think this will be the all end solution but slowly things are coming together!

Marissa,
SO sorry to hear!!!Chat Icon
I did have my tonsils and adenoids out but not for this reason...mainly due to sore throats. The procedure really isnt that bad. Are they 100% sure it will cure all things? or help? The promised me no more sore throats and that definitely didnt happen. Did dr H. send you for the sleep study? Maybe second opinion it?Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Aww---sorry to hear.

Just wanted to say that my sister had her adenoids removed and what a WORLD of difference it made for her sleep apnea and breathing!

She no longer snores and she has a full night's rest instead of broken sleep nightly.

Lots of luck for whatever you decide.

Thanks for the feedback.
I am going to keep this in the back of my mind. We're finally sleeping through the night in her own bed so we'll see. She is on nasal steroid spray twice a day though so maybe that's helping. IDK.
Good luck! I'm glad you have some answers for RJ.
