SLEEPING ON STOMACH
AT WHAT AGE DO YOU THINK IT IS SAFE FOR A BABY TO START SLEEPING ON THEIR STOMACH.
MY DAUGHTER IS 2 MONTHS OLD AND SHE STARTED SLEEPING ON HER STOMACH A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, BUT DURING THE DAY SO I CAN SIT NEXT TO HER AND WATCH HER. SHE CAN LIFT HER HEAD BUT I AM STILL NERVOUS.

Re: SLEEPING ON STOMACH
Bella started doing this at 4 mts. It freaks me out and I spend a lot of time checking on her at night and during the day. I have heard that if they can lift their heads and roll over themselves it's ok, but to try to turn them back onto their backs whenever you see them on their tummies. When I do that, Bella just turns back to her tummy. It's a lost battle.
The Dr.'s say 1 year is OK.

Re: SLEEPING ON STOMACH
Sara srarted sleeping on her belly at 10 weeks old. Once they figure out how to roll over and they are comfortable there really is no stopping them. I used to turn Sara overbut she turned right back to her belly.
I just kept checking on her throughout the day and at night

Re: SLEEPING ON STOMACH
Hayley only started sleeping on her belly when she could roll both ways (stomach to back and back to stomach) when she was 7 months. Before that, I would put her on her back and she would turn on her side by herself but over to her tummy.

Re: SLEEPING ON STOMACH
I think it was about 4 months - It's scary, but it was not my choice, I would put him on his back and he would roll over everytime. Hey I like to sleep on my stomach too!

Re: SLEEPING ON STOMACH
DD has been sleeping on her belly since she was about 6 weeks old. At that time, she could lift and turn her head on her own, and she just slept much better on her belly. She refused to be swaddled anymore by that time, and she wouldn't sleep more than an hour or so on her back.

Re: SLEEPING ON STOMACH
I'm a big advocate of belly sleeping. My kids were doing it from the minute I realized they would sleep for 4 hours if they were on their belly but only 20 min intervals - max 2 hours on their backs.
Most pediatricians say when they can roll over on their own, they can sleep on their bellies.
Make sure the mattress is firm, no blanket, no toys in the crib, sheets are on tight.

Re: SLEEPING ON STOMACH
I NEVER let me first one sleep on his belly. #2, not really either. #3 - I broke down and I've let him for naps - boy, he sleeps so nice & soundly! - but I stopped doing it over the last few weeks. I read another SIDS article that scared me and I figured I should let him get use to having nice naps on his back. He's gotten use to it. Im just too scared.
ETA: He's 2 months old.

Re: SLEEPING ON STOMACH
I do it just for naps right now. DS is 2 months old. I asked my ped about it and she said once he's able to turn over on his stomach I can leave him that way.

Re: SLEEPING ON STOMACH
Miranda didn't start sleeping on her stomach until about 8 months or so. She rolls all over the place during her sleep now.

Re: SLEEPING ON STOMACH
At around 5.5 mos-6 mos my son was turning himself on his belly to sleep. I freaked out at first and would quickly turn him on his back, but he would turn over again. At my next appt I asked the ped about it and he said once he can roll back and forth he's a "free man" and can sleep on his tummy if he likes.

Re: SLEEPING ON STOMACH
We made the mistake of letting Ava sleep on her tummy during the day (she rolls there already!), and I'm convinced it's the reason she's not going for longer stretches at night anymore. I'm too nervous to let her sleep on her belly at night. Does anyone know if they make a breathable mattress? I thought I heard they do.
