sleeping situation - thoughts?

Kind of a weird question for you all that's been on my mind the closer and closer I get to my due date.

My DH snores pretty bad. Chat Icon It seems to be worse at different points of the year based on what's going on with his sinuses and its gotten progressively worse as he's gained weight since we've been married. I cannot remember the last time I've gotten a good night sleep between this issue and being pregnant. Sometimes I wake up with a scream because it startles me in the nighttime which then wakes him up. He feels really bad and has tried the nose strips, I've used earplugs, let's me fall asleep first, etc. Nothing seems to help much. Needless to say it has occassionally become a source of argument between us bc he feels bad and well, because I'm utterly exhausted.

For the last couple of months all I keep thinking about is what we are going to do when the baby comes. We want to have him in the room with us for the first couple of months in a bassinet. I'm so nervous that he is also not going to be able to sleep between the snoring and my screams when I get startled out of a dead sleep. I really don't want to put him in the crib right away. Chat Icon I also don't want DH to sleep elsewhere, that's not fair to him either.

I know this is kind of a weird issue so if you've read this far, thank you. Just wondered if anyone was dealing with something similar or had some advice.

what about going to the doctor about this?

While it may be considered extreme - a friend of mine had the EXACT same issue. Her husbands' snores were so badly - he did sleep in another room - but she could STILL HEAR THEM...

They went to the doc - and while I forget the name of what he had done - he had a 'simple surgical procedure' done and from the minute he woke up - all was 100% better. He was having issues breathing through his nose during his sleep and that was corrected and they are dramatically happier now...

I bet you he has sleep apnea-would he do the sleep clinic and wear a cPap? Everyone I know that has done this is SO much better. Sleep apnea can cut oxygen in your body by 50%! So it is not just a matter of comfort but also health. Losing weight can't hurt but that is a longer processChat Icon

My dad has sleep apnea and wears the mask, but the question to know if he HAS it is - does he ever STOP snoring during the night?

Like - snore and then there's a minute or two of silence???? That would be sleep apnea...

ITA- Have him go to the Dr. My DH just recently did this and he has bad sleep apnea. When he wears the machine, it is so much better. I get a better nights sleep! :)

ITA with the sleep apnea! My DH has sleep apnea and when he did the sleep study it turns out that he actually stopped breathing many times throughout the night. He now uses a CPAP machine every single night and we both sleep much better. It is a pain in the neck at first but definitely worth it.

Re: sleeping situation - thoughts?

I'm actually having a similar problem...

DH snores pretty badly, too. I actually have one of those high-powered fans that I keep on my bedside table. I turn it on at night because it helps me to be able to sleep through the snoring.

The concern that I'm having is not so much with the snoring, but I don't want the baby to become dependent on that source of white noise (the way I am--I keep it on even when DH is away on business).

I've been trying to get DH to see a Dr. about this, it's something you may want to try as well. Chat Icon

thanks everyone - i have been trying to get him to go to the doctor and hope he finally agrees soon. it's such a stupid issue and as silly as it sounds, it's been kind of tough on our marriage. thanks for listening! Chat Icon

Re: sleeping situation - thoughts?

My DH wears the mask since the day I met him.. It sounds line an AC smooth humm.. When he is away I actually have a hard time sleeping w/out it.. If he has sleep apnea you really should find out because DH was told he could have a heart attack in his sleep if he doesn't wear that mask.. Not to be an alarmist or anything but itsno joke.. its a serious condition w/many health risks attached.. Please encourage him to go..

I agree with everyone's comments.

Maybe, he would agree to going to a doctor now knowing that the baby is on the way! Give him the guilt trip he if seems reluctant. Good Luck!

Re: sleeping situation - thoughts?

My DH had this snoring problem as well...and he did loose weight which i think helped but i also noticed if he sleeps on his side or his stomach he barely ever snores. If you can get him to try not to be a back sleeper than it might help as well or until you can get to the doctor

For me the CPAP machine really helped my marriage. I am not an effective person when I don't get sleep. Good luck! Chat Icon

Re: sleeping situation - thoughts?

It definitely sounds like your DH could possibly have sleep apnea. Try to convince him to at least go have a sleep test. He can talk to the doctor about his options after he gets his results back. A Cpap machine can work wonders.
