SLR mommies..
Need lens rec's.
Nikon's 50mm 1.4 or 1.8
Anyone have the 1.8 and totally happy? Is it worth it to splurge for the 1.4?
What's your favorite lens?

What camera do you have?
I have the 1.8 it's an awesome lens. It is NOT, however, an AF-S lens. Which means that it will not autofocus on the D40 or D60.

Hmm.. It says "AF" on the website. Does it have to be an "AF-S" lens to work with the D40?

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G lens
Same here (on Summer's recommendation). Ours will autofocus with the D60/D40x/D40 DSLRs

In order for the lens to autofocus on the D40 it needs to be an AF-S lens...
The 50mm AF lens will have to be manually focused on the D40.
Essentially the autofocus "motor" isnt in the D40 so it needs to be in the lens..that's the "S" part of it.
Aside from that they are comparable...

I have the 50 mm f/1.4 D
I have a Nikon D50 and it auto focuses.
ETA: I bought it second hand, so I paid a lot less than the nearly $300 it goes for.

I have a Canon 50mm f/1.8, which focuses on any camera. It's my favorite lens and I've been VERY happy with it although I would love a 1.4. The lack of AF would be a deal breaker for me if I had a Nikon though.
