So annoyed at my parish! Re class for first time parents before baptism!
I just called my church and they require a class for first time parents to take before baptism. I believe I was told you take it after the baby is born. I didn't push the issue b/c the lady on the phone was short with me. But now i am thinking, I don't see myself wanting to get a babysitter for my newborn and also being able/wanting to sit in a class if I had a c-section. So do you have to take a class and what are the details on that?
The lady at my church barely wants to answer any questions, I am so agitated right now. The only way I know anything is from you guys, so I ask questions but if I didn't ask, she wouldn't have basically told me anything other than to call back after baby is born. What's the big deal why she can't answer my questions or give freaking details??? I am trying to prepare for the birth of my child and the lady at the church is gonna get snippy and short with me? I think it could have even been a nun!!! She was so rude (this is the second time this mth that i called and she was the same each time). I had to ask questions to get any details (such as when they baptize, how often, if they do it during Lent, if I have to take a class, etc, etc).
I wish I did not have to go to that church, I am so annoyed.

Yes, my church requires a class. I simply told them I wanted to take it before baby was born and they let me. I am going tomorrow.
ETA - this is for the baptism, right?

Re: So annoyed!!! Does your church require first time parents to take a class?
Yes- my church had us take one as well...We did it after the baby was born and my MIL watched him, but there were some people there with their DC's...At my church it was pretty short, not a "class" more like, they went over what would occur at the baptism and it was very informal- just sat around a table with some other parents...
ETA: I'm pretty sure its not only 1st time parents at my church,so I'm sure I'll be doing it again !

Well my thing is that I am doing the baptism soon (2-2.5 mths) so to take the class and bring baby I don't feel comfortable with regarding the baby getting a cold, etc, from a group of people. I wouldn't feel comfortable bringing the new baby so young around strangers.

my church requires a class for each child being baptized. i went when i was still PG so i didnt have to worry about it when the baby was only a few weeks. DS was christened at 8 weeks.

Re: So annoyed at my parish! Re class for first time parents before baptism!
Our church requires 3....count 'em 3 classes!!! They are 2 hours in lenght and they must be done the month before you have the baptism. DH and I wanted to baptize the baby as soon as possible but I don't think I'll be up to taking 3 classes this month so we can get it done in October. And, we already have another engagement in November on the 1 day they offer the baptism and then we won't do it in December/January b/c of the holidays. So, looks like we will have to wait.
ETA: When we met with the church they told us they don't want the parents to bring the baby so that you can really pay attention and focus on the discussion. We will have to get one of our parents to watch him while we are at the class.

We had to take a class as well. For us, it wasn't long--maybe 30 mins...we didn't bring DS, but alot of the parents brought the babies and it was fine. Maybe ask if you can bring your DC with you.

Re: So annoyed at my parish! Re class for first time parents before baptism!
we had to take a class and bring him to mass for a "coming out" sort of thing.
we brought DS to the class. it's so informal. he slept through most of it and cried at the end. everyone was laughing because he waited until the end.
it's really not a big deal to bring the baby. everyone in our class did. DS was 6 weeks old

Re: So annoyed at my parish! Re class for first time parents before baptism!
I had to take a class too only 1 thank goodness and never again for siblings.
It was about 2 hours long, they made us get in a cirlce go around introduce ourselves, why we want to baptize our child yada yada reminded me of pre cana. then they had us watch a video, and the deacon spoke for awhile too. It wasnt that bad. We took it after the baby was born, DH's aunt watched her. Our church sent a letter requesting no children b/c it takes away from the whole process but a couple had to bring their child and I have to say as I was angry at first to read no children how dare they- I saw what they meant. This child was screaming and running around, the parents had no control and it was really annoying when they deacon was trying to go over how the process would go- there are no rehearsals after the class it is at that class is when they tell you what you need to do. At least in my church. I actually liked it.

WE took it too at our church. It was after the baby was born, and we took him, as did most of the other parents in the "class". I wasn't too worried, everyone's baby was roughly the same age, and the class was rather quick. NowI'd be pizzed if they made me take it again for #2, but they didn't!

Re: So annoyed at my parish! Re class for first time parents before baptism!
fine, I'm a bad Catholic sometimes... I was irritated by the amount of time the marriage classes took... but frankly, this one totally sends me over the edge!
OK sleep-deprived parents, leave your little one at home (likely for the first time) and come to the rectory for an afternoon of dipping around and doing not so much.
why can't they just mail us a packet of info? I know I know, it's not 'communal' or 'social' enough
ok, catholic rant #412 is over.... I feel better

I had to bring DD with me ALONE because our sponsors lived out of town and DH had to work. She was less than a month old (I think maybe 3.5 weeks). She just stayed in her carrier the whole time and took a bottle of pumped BM at the end of the class.
Since everyone is kind of in the same boat (so they understand), you won't have people wanting to touch the baby.
Like pre-cana, look at it as a "rite of passage" rather than a hassle.

you figure with all of the negativity facing the Catholic church, you would think that anybody wanting to baptize their kid in the faith would be allowed to do so without any type of BS...

I hope it didn't sound that way, as I don't have a problem with the class. I had a problem with the lady on the phone's attitude and not wanting to answer questions. I like to be prepared, don't I have a right to KNOW how the process works?
DH called later in the day, and was determined to get answers. He planned to give the cranky lady lip if she gave him a problem.
Turns out, we can take the class beforehand (she did not offer this, DH asked). And it's only 45 mins. So I plan to go in October just to get that done.
I just get so frustrated, I don't understand why when people are asked questions that they can't answer it? Esp when dealing with the church I DONATE $ to. I don't expect to be talked to like crap and brushed off the phone.
Rant over.

I didn't take it that way- sorry for the implication.
Many people do see it as a hassle- especially right after having a baby. And you're right- you'd think they'd be more accomodating.
Realize though- that the people who work those phones in the rectory are usually volunteers, NOT customer service type people at ALL. I had the same issues with our rectory *secretary*. I asked to speak with the pastor and was able to get all my questions answered.

Re: So annoyed at my parish! Re class for first time parents before baptism!
hate to say it, but I actually DO view it like a hassle.... it's a right of passage for our baby, but not for us.
I know that's a selfish way of looking at it, but I'm just being honest about how I feel
All these classes prior to sacraments are new to the church. My parents never went to pre-cana..... they certainly never went to a class merely to baptize me!
But then again, I'm an old-schooler who pines for the days pre-vatican II.......
bring back the latin mass, the priest's back to the congregation, and the doilies for all of our heads! Not to mention the MUCH BETTER classical music!

Re: So annoyed at my parish! Re class for first time parents before baptism!
just called the rectory to get the procedure.....
they won't let us attend prior to birth. they want us to be there on the fri night before the baptism, or the friday before.... those are our choices. they said to 'call them once the baby arrives and we know when we want the baptism to be scheduled'.
sigh. I guess Oma must babysit that night
