Re: So annoyed at my parish! Re class for first time parents before baptism!

you figure with all of the negativity facing the Catholic church, you would think that anybody wanting to baptize their kid in the faith would be allowed to do so without any type of BS...
i dont really know that its BS to take a class on something your child will be doing with his/her life..?
Being baptised when the parents do it for the right reasons is a lifelong commitment. Id rather take a 3 hour class, and be informed, then not. JMO.

what church are you having dc baptised at? We had to take the class for DD too, we were able to do it beforehand..our church said no to children bringing brought, but not sure how much they enforced it or not since we went before she was born..stinks if we use that church again for the next dc, we have to do that class again

Re: So annoyed at my parish! Re class for first time parents before baptism!
This isn't directed at the OP but a comment in general...I don't think the classes for catholic sacraments are a hassle or anything of the sort. If you are catholic and going to have your child be a catholic, then its important to understand what is going on.
So many faiths require a ton in terms of prep and attendence. The baptism class is such a small thing in the scheme of things, I guess I don't get why anyone gets annoyed by it. Its your faith! And to me that is important...I had no problem with pre cana or baptism classes, they aren't a big deal in the end.

Re: So annoyed at my parish! Re class for first time parents before baptism!
We had to go to a 2 hour class and they said we could bring our DS. He was about 2 months old at the time. He stayed at my mom's house when we went, but I think at least 2 parents had their babies with them.
I did not arrange the baptism with my DS until he was born so I don't know if they allow parents to take the class before the baby is born. I know everyone at my class already gave birth to their children.
We were suppose to go back again for a another one session, but my DS was not feeling well so instead they just sent us the stuff we were suppose to pick up through the mail.

Yes, my church requires a class. I simply told them I wanted to take it before baby was born and they let me. I am going tomorrow.
I took mine for my DD before she was born. Go down to the office personally and talk to them there. They are much different than on the phone

I had to take a class but I was told it was the parents and godparents we went and took the baby with us and when we got there it was a waste of time since none of the other godparents were there and some people didnt even have there husbands or wives there it was a couple of hours on a sunday..If you have to go Id say bring the baby with you.

I understand your perspective, but I guess it's becuase I come from the 'olden days' perspective. for millenniia, no catholic attended a class to receive a sacrament... it was granted to us as a right of passage after proving our worthiness to progress within our congregations.
We DID all need catechism to be taught our faith and how to be a good catholic, though. This class-before sacrament thing is new, and frankly, I tend to get nothing out of it! The classes feel more like a group therapy session than something religious and holy.
I obviously will be spending a great deal of effort teaching our baby our religion and good moral values, and a few hours is nothing in that regard. from my perspective, it's more the principle (we are nowadays forced to take a class in order for our child to become a catholic) than the actual time or effort required of us. As if after the class, there's no more input required from us
