So annoyed with the babysitter...
DD just turned 3 this week. She had a true babysitter for the first time ever (not family watching her). She did not follow our instructions at all. Some of it was stuff that doesn't really matter (giving her snack before lunch) but some stuff really bothered me. We told her she could only watch the winnie the pooh movie and this girl put on the tv for three hours STRAIGHT and we come home and DD was a zombie and she was watching all of these scary old school mickey mouse cartoons. DD hasn't slept through the night since seeing them, I swear! But the worst thing to me... she opened a lot of unopened birthday toys... and threw out all of the instructions to them in the garbage (like the building guide for the legos, the directions of a game, etc.) and two pieces of her only 24 piece set of magnatiles are completely lost. I spent seriously like 48 hours trying to find them. It was a brand new toy and now 2 pieces are gone. I am just so, so upset and can't get myself together!

Re: So annoyed with the babysitter...
I'm pretty laid back when it comes to sitters but I would be very annoyed with some of the things your sitter did. I would be furious if my sitter allowed my 3 year old to watch that much TV. There is no reason that a sitter should be using a TV for a child that age - their job it to devote 100% of their time and energy to that child. The toys would bug me a little but if they were in the playroom or the child's room, I can understand why the sitter opened them.

Re: So annoyed with the babysitter...
I'm be pissed about the toys. I would never open anything that wasn't mine, without asking first. I wouldn't even open a box of cereal without permission! Lol
Needless to say, I wouldn't ask her to sit again. Is she a family friend or something? Depending on my relationship to her, I may tell her that the reason why she will not be asked back is because of her actions. Not in a nasty way, but kind of a heads up of that's not what to do when babysitting.

I def. won't be asking her to babysit again.
I was just so upset about the tv stuff. She's only ever watched like 3 tv shows and 2 movies in her whole life and then this girl showed her 3 hours of stuff I was not quite OK with! I cried lol...
and now I'm just annoyed about the missing toys... but im crazy like that...
ugh i wish i didnt have anxiety and could let this go but the whole experience has rattled me so badly...

I would be annoyed but take a deep breath. Your daughter is fine, that's the important thing.
Toys are just toys. Don't let that bother you so much. There is nothing you can do about it now, try to let it go.

The TV would bother me. That's way too much TV for a 3 year old to be watching! She should be spending that time engaging with your DC.
As a side note, I'm trying to figure out what MM cartoons they would have watched, like original MM cartoons back before it was really for children?

ITA. I also don't see the problem with the TV thing but we are a big TV family so that never bothered me. As long as she wasn't just ignoring the child, I see nothing wrong with that.

mickey from the 1930's to the 1960's ... somewhere in between there. not like mickey mouse clubhouse or mickey of the 80's and 90's or anything like that.
The directions I left her were simple. Play with her for a few hours and then she can watch 1 movie (gave specific title) at (specific time). they were playing when we left. we had to come back early, and they were not playing. they had watched tv for almost 3 hours straight at this point and it wasnt even the time i said they could start watching tv yet and it wasnt the movie i told her to put on it was many different other things...

I would not be asking her to babysit again. I don't care if they are not major things. You left her directions and she did not follow them. End of story. Good bye... don't let the door slam you in the butt.
Babysitters are getting paid good money. The least they can do is follow simple directions like only one tv show or no snacks.
There are plenty of people out there that are great babysitters no need to let things like this slide. It would have been one thing if it was an established babysitter and she had one bad day. If this was the first time you were using her why should you continue using her.

Re: So annoyed with the babysitter...
I would be annoyed and would not have her babysit anymore. And to be honest, next time you hire a different babysitter, I would tell her the reason i needed a new babysitter is bc the last one did x,y,z so she knows how important these things are to you.
As a previous poster mentioned, your child is safe and sound, which is all that matters in the end.
I would be more annoyed about the toys, not the tv. I dont let my kids watch tv often, but I also know the the tantrums my daughter will throw sometimes when I do something she isnt happy with...and as a first time babysitter sometimes you just have to give in to the child.

Re: So annoyed with the babysitter...
I would never ever use her again. I'd want to rip into her about why, but I probably wouldn't unless she specifically brought it up. But I'd REALLY want to tell her exactly how bad she was!
I'm sorry you had such a bad first experience.
Just out of curiosity, how old is this girl?

I babysat for years and would never do anything the parents specifically ask me not to do. I don't think TV watching is a huge deal but you don't put on random shows not approved by the parent. You also don't go opening brand new items you know nothing about and then not take care of the items! I would never have this person babysit. If they can't handle the minor instructions then lord knows what else they are doing.

It was probably the new Mickey Mouse cartoons that are on Disney channel (not Disney Jr.) My girls love those things. They call it "Silly Mickey" lol
I think you need to take a deep breath and chill out. It's not the end of the world. Now you know not to use her again. Next time be more firm with your instructions and tell this story so they get that it's NOT okay.

Yes, how did you know it was three hours? Not that it matters since you won't be using her again anyway.

She never said it was the end of the world. But just because you think it is a show that you allow your girls to watch does not mean that it is appropriate for another child. I let my son watch tv but I also have a lot of friends that do not let their children watch tv at all and that is up to them. It is not up to a babysitter to decide that the parents rule is stupid or not ok.

Re: So annoyed with the babysitter...
Was this a one time babysitter or someone you hired for a daily job? If for daily, find someone else.
Those old school Mickey cartoons can be very scary. DS def had nightmares after watching one (goofy was a zombie & falling apart... Inappropriate and on regular Disney).
As for the toys... Let it go. She may have just been trying to do something other than TV to entertain your kid.

Re: So annoyed with the babysitter...
I would be annoyed too. We watch tv in our house but I keep it at a minimum and would be irritated that the sitter didn't follow my instructions. If be most annoyed about opening brand new toys AND losing parts. Obviously, don't have her babysit again. I would try to keep it in perspective though, it's not like anything truly harmful happened. Use it as a learning experience. This is why I only have family babysit, I trust no one.
I'm also curious as to how you know they watched tv for 3 hours. She could have turned it on as background noise out of habit while they did other things. Obviously they were opening and playing with her new toys at some point.

Yes I was curious about this too. How did you know the tv was on for 3 hours?

Re: So annoyed with the babysitter...
I would not use her again but I wouldn't be that upset about the toys. I actually wouldn't mind if a babysitter used new unopened gifts to play with kids. If she had tv on the entire time, that would bother me a lot. I am always clear to anyone watching our kids that we do not like them watching tv.

Here is why I wouldn't use her again. When I used to babysit, which was all the time, I followed the parents instructions to the letter...never deviated from them. If she can't follow simple instructions then I would not trust her judgment.

I too would be upset. But try calling lego and explain which part numbers are missing. They will send them to you.

So annoyed with the babysitter...
I would be a little annoyed but if she's not an every day sitter it wouldn't bother me tremendously. Next time I would write down the important stuff for her. I know my kids get so excited when the sitter comes and can see her getting distracted while trying to listen and remember what i'm saying. Stuff I don't want opened isn't mixed in with their regular toys.
