So confused BF vs. Formula
I know there are many Pros to BF but formula is great after my 12 week maternity leave is up. I'm torn, I need advice, help and encouragement.

Re: So confused BF vs. Formula
i have a private office (currently, please GOD no layoff for me, PLEASE)....so i plan to pump at work....IF i am capable of breastfeeding...
this decision is a VERY personal one - there are pros and cons to both...but ultimately, it is up to you...

Re: So confused BF vs. Formula
Since you are torn…My advice is to take a BF class, see what they say. And then go to the hospital and give it a try. If you hate it, no harm done, the colustrom that the baby gets is incredibly beneficial even if you don’t continue to BF. I was torn as well, I took a class and wanted to try BF, which I did, but DS was a big boy and I felt too much pressure in trying to satisfy him so I supplemented for 1 month then went to just formula.
Next child I will try again and see how long I can make it. You don’t want to regret not trying….but you have to do what is best for you and your baby!

Re: So confused BF vs. Formula
let me tell you - i was still doubting my decision to BF after 3 months! but i am so glad i stuck with it. DS and i have a great rhythm down, i am able to pump whenever i want at work, and yesterday when we went to the ped and i saw that he was 15 lbs 7 oz. i was sooo proud to know that was (mostly) because of me (i supplement a little at night so he sleeps through the night).
you will need lots of support, and i recommend a BFing class, because it's not as "easy" and natural to do as it might seem!
you ALWAYS have the option to go to formula, so if you are on the fence, my best advice is to at least give it a try

This is what I plan to do. I am only going to be out of work for 6-8 weeks, then coming back to proctor finals, etc... so t hey are typically half days.. I plan to pump for when I am not home, and BF possibly for the rest of the summer.. but I plan to turn to formula when I really go back to work in September... I think just the time I can bf because I am home will be beneficial as well..
My take on it is that I am going to take a class, see how it goes... and then make my decision..

Re: So confused BF vs. Formula
as a BTDT mom, my advice would be to do what is BEST for you at ALL TIMES.
if you want to try BFing and it works out well, great! if for some reason you aren't feeling it and think it's best to switch to formula, DO IT.
every single person you ask, before and after you give birth, will have an opinion about this. there can be a lot of pressure to go either way. PLEASE just listen to your heart and do what YOU feel is best at the time.
my experience with this is a little long to write here, but if you want to discuss feel free to FM!

Re: So confused BF vs. Formula
I hate the BF debate - I think every woman has to do what works best for THEM - End of story.
Since you're 'torn' - what about taking a class and getting some more information? After that, I would honestly just take it a day at a time once the baby is born and see how you are feeling, how things are going , and what you are comfortable with -
I do not give a flying f*ck what ANYONE else's opinion is on this subject. As far as I am concerned this is something that affects ME, and ME alone so 'your' opinion of what I should do, or what you did, or what's best for the baby is totally and completely irrelevant. - Technically BM might be the best thing for Baby - but a miserable Mommy is NOT good for baby - KWIM??
You will figure out what works best for you -

Re: So confused BF vs. Formula
I would say breastfeed for the first 3 months and see how it goes. If you feel like you can't handle pumping, you can always switch to formula.
I would make that decision later on -- you can always switch from breastfeeding to formula, but you can't go from exclusively using formula to breastfeeding, so start with breastfeeding.

Re: So confused BF vs. Formula
I was torn with the decision too, but decided that I will try BF because I owe it to myself and my DC. If BF works for us, I plan to do it for 4 months while I am home on mat leave, and stop when I go back to work. If I change my mind and pump at work, we do have a health clinic at work with a designated lactation room with storage.

Re: So confused BF vs. Formula
It really is such a personal decision, and honestly I wouldn't make it until you have your baby and see how it's going - for all you know BFing won't even work, or, for all you know, you'll end up loving it and will want to continue.
I'll tell you from my personal experience - I was a litigation attorney when I went back to work when Alex was 10 weeks old. I too thought I would wean her when I went back to work, but when the time came, I couldn't bear the thought of weaning her, so I went ahead and pumped at work, between client meetings and court hearings/motions. I made it work, and it really wasn't so bad... but again, it's just such a personal decision that depends on SO many factors

Re: So confused BF vs. Formula
My plan is to try it out. If it doesn't work- it doesn't work. I will not beat myself up about it as my heart is not set in either direction.
