So I am thinking of going now to Croatia with my dad and DH will meet us their so I have some travel qustions
Orignally we were all gonna go, then I got cheap and said no and now I am just gonna suck it up and go because it is only going to get more expensive.
Anyway, I will have DS who is 2 and DD will be 1. I know he will need his own seat, but do I need to bring his carseat on the plane? Should I get DD her own seat and bring the carseat (she will be 13 months) or have her stay on my lap? She hasn't really slept on me in a while but, I guess if I she didn't have a choice she would fall asleep. Now my dad keeps saying they have bassinets on the plane too, how does that work?
Do you think I should ship diapers from here or buy them their? We would be going for about 5 weeks.
I am totally freaking out mentally because I now what a 1 hour car ride does to DS and that is with the DVD player but I am hoping with my dad it will be easier since DS adores him.
Also, any tips that I should know?

How long is the flight? 9+ hours or so? Do you think you will be able to have her on your lap for that long?
I can't imagine taking DS to Europe and holding him by myself without DH to share the load.

Well we would have a lay over in Zurich and I think the flight their is about 9 hours. Then from there to Croatia is I think another 2 hour flight. Yeah, I guess your right. I could always get her own seat on the long flight and she could sit on me on the short one. Since my dad is young I think I will be OK traveling without DH going there. We will be coming back together.

You don't technically need the carseat but it may make it more familiar/comfortable & then you'd have it when you land.
When we flew to Ireland they had bassinetts in the seats in the middle; it sort of reminded me of a changing table type of thing--but the ones I saw were for little babies or seemed that way (maybe I'm wrong or I'm not remembering correctly--this was 2 yrs ago).
Where in Croatia are you going? Could you find out about the diaper situation? We were there too on our hm (Dubrovnik) & we went into the supermarket & they had diapers & such but not American brands.

Yes, that's a good idea. Get her seat for the long trip and save a bit on the short one.
You are going to be pooped with 2 young kids on your own with such a long trip.

Unfortunately the airline decides for you - you can't have a lap child on an international flight so you will need to get seats for both of them. I do believe they will both also need to be in car seats in their own seats but you should check the individual airline's website for more information on that.
Have a great time! We were in Dubrovnik on our honeymoon, it's beautiful!

Well I would be staying for 3 weeks at the island of Krk which is closer to Italy and then a week a few hours away from Dubrovnik. I guess I could always find out from my cousin and see what brands they have. My mom seems to think they have Huggies and pampers.
This is turning into a research project

So I checked on Swiss Air's website to get pricing info and for DS it is a full fare which I expected. DD is about 1/4 the price which I also expected so that means she still gets her own seat even if I am not paying a full fare?

That's not true. We are flying AirItalia in October and DS is going to be a lapchild, but I have to pay the taxes. On a domestic flight a lapchild is totally free.
I'd ship diapers, etc. to make your life easier.
Good luck! My parents are coming with me to Italy too to help me

Maybe it depends on the airline then. I guess I will just call and pick their brains.

Good to know - it must be an airline to airline thing. Or perhaps US airlines v. international. That would be a big money saver, I hope that works out for you!

Re: So I am thinking of going now to Croatia with my dad and DH will meet us their so I have some travel qustions
I have traveled to europe many times and to china and have always seen people on all different airlines with lap children. I will say buy a seat!!!! 9 hours is a long time to hold a 1 year old (it might be another thing if the baby was 1 month old) - and whenever I have seen parents holding their children on flights that long they both look totally miserable - and are fighting to get down and move around. A two hour flight with a 1 year old is very different from a 9 hour or even a 5 hour one.

Yeah I am thinking of going that route too. It's amazing how much your life changes when you have kids. I have traveled plenty of times their, even as a young adult and now that I have a 2 kids everything seems so new to me.

Holding a child on a short flight would be okay but to me a Europe flight is long and uncomfortable without holding a child (I'm tall so my legs don't fit comfortably). If you hold them you would have problems having anything to drink or eat on the flight and 9 hours is a long time. Plus depending on the flight you take you will probably want to sleep for a good portion of it.

I've flown internationally twice with DS and he was a lapchild. For a flight that long I would get DD a seat. I have always brought a carseat to use on the plane incase we got a seat for DS and if not just checked it at the gate. This last time we used this seatbelt thing for DS and it turned out well for us. The only thing I would suggest for this is if you use it also bring one of those neck pillows incase DS falls asleep!

DH mentioned this to me so I am guessing he spoke to either you or your DH about it when you guys were here.
I will show DH and see what he thinks

Honestly, I would bring the car seat for both of them (a flight attendant will help you to schlep everything on the plane but will not set up the seats for you). You will want to sleep as well as stretch your legs. If you are holding either child, you will not be able to get up at all. I think they will also be more comfortable in their "comfort" place, KWIM?

I have never once seen a car seat on an international flight. I would hold the baby in your lap and give Luka the seat. I have always had Noah on my lap until this year, when he will get his own seat. I swapped with my husband and we stood up for a while, its no big deal really.
I know that for an under 2, BA charges 10% of the full fare and taxes, but you won't get your own seat for her. She will be considered a lap child.
eta...I don't think I would use a US car seat in European cars, I know that its illegal in the UK to use a car seat that isn't sold in the UK unless no other car seats are available. They won't fit into the cars the same. Its not illegal in the sense that the police will stop you, but it could cause a problem with your insurance should you have an accident.
And, you can get pampers and lots of the same stuff all over Europe. Its the 21st Century you know!

Good to know about the carseats because I have 2 britaxs and they big and I was worried about that. I guess then I should borrow them .
DD is allergic to the huggies brand and the last time I was there I don't recall them having all the brands but that was 8 years ago.

I don't bring my car seat with me to the states anymore, I bought one and keep it at my parents house, the cars are all different and your seats might not fit too well in them, in Europe we don't have anything like the latch system, so its best to borrow some if you can. I believe that you can buy pampers everywhere. Here is a link to a site that lists what you can buy in what country. list

well you already know my thoughts... i replied to your FM. but you can totally buy everything there. diapers only bring enuff for the flight and and for the first day till you can get to the store. but they carry huggies and pampers (cruisers) but they really have it all. its not like the old days. only take with you what you must like i mentioned the tylenol motrin and pedialyte. oh and since your dd has allergies take the benadryl. Your pediatrician will give you a summer list as well. fm me if you have any other questions.
I cant wait to leave already!! i'm counting down now! less then a month to go and then 7 wks in paradise!

I have no tips, but I am jealous.
My DH is dying to take me and DD to see it. He used to vacation there every summer when he was a kid.
