So i have called EI .........and have a question for those who have had it

and have just received the forms to fill out ....

i am very exceited to start helping my little man learn to communicate with us as we are all at our wits end with sheer frustration

my question is how long is it before someone comes to evaluate my son ?? and is it done here at our home or do we have to go somewhere ???

also they keep asking me if he has any issues with food and eating !!!! which is a huge battle as he eats and then spits most things out again what does this have to do with his speech??
we are also going to get his hearing checked on monday morning ..

Re: So i have called EI .........and have a question for those who have had it

i'm a speech therapist, and did an internship in EI. i can't answer about how long it'll take for somebody to come out... but i can tell you about the food stuff,
eating different textures of food helps mouth muscles develop ( chewy stuff is harder for them to eat, so their muscles have to work harder, same with crunchy stuff). its all coordinating their mouth muscles.
SOO they just want to make sure hes not eating all soft foods that could be slowing down his mouth muscles developing, which could affect how he makes his sounds, etc. also, just generally being able to coordinate all of those muscles to chew and swallow is important for being able to use the muscles to make speech sounds.
same with temperatures- they want to make sure hes not too sensitive to different temperatures of foods with all the nerves and stuff in his mouth....

ETA: the testing is done at your house. they'll come out and basically play wth him, and see the kinds of things hes doing. they'll also ask you a lot of questions to get more info. its really very low key and the kids usually have fun with it.. its like play time for them!

there are many ways to work on feeding issues as well as speech issues (another SLP here). if your DS qualifies an individualized plan will be developed that works for him!

well.. first they'll see if they really think its a major sesnsory issue ( some kids have trouble processing different senssory input, like different temperatures, textures) OR if its just a phase kind of thing.
i work in a school now so i'm trying to remember all the stuff we did in EI.. but i think if they decide that the temperature thing is a real issue, they'll do some things to slowly increase the temperature of foods to get him more used to the warmer/hotter stuff.
ETA: like Sasha said, once they eveluate him, they'll come up with a plan of action that works for him specifically.

I'm not sure what county you are in - and if it's different throughout - but I believe in Nassau they have 45 days from the time you call and make your request. Within that time they sent out our advisor from the county. With her we filled out paperwork only (She didn't even need to see Jack - he was sleeping)

Then about a week later we had the first therapist come for speech. We had the option of having the two therapists come together (they call it an arena) or seperate. I choose seperate so that he wasn't too overwhelmed.

The Speech therapist came on Monday. The second one (general eval) came yesterday. We have a roundtable meeting on the 15th since he did qualify for services. If he didn't qualify we wouldn't need this meeting.

Basically they came with a bag of toys and asked him to do certain things. They also watched how he played with the toys.

They asked us alot of questions and took it from there.

I hope that helps somewhat.

Actually, from the time of the call, a meeting is required to happen in 30 days to discuss the testing results, so everything happens pretty quickly in order to get that meeting to happen in 30 days from the time of your call.

good luck - let me know if you have any questions!!! Chat Icon
