So, I just want to point out a BIG thing regarding this measles "outbreak"....
I pulled this article from channel 7 news online. I wrote this on another post as well...everyone jumped to conclusions and started gonig crazy about people not vaccinating their kids without knowing the FULL story. Pls. see the bold text below!!!!
LONG ISLAND -- A developing story on Long Island involving a possible outbreat of measles.
A health alert is being issued to anyone who may have come in contact with a baby, now being treated for measles. Health officials don't want anyone to panic, but they are ready to treat hundreds of people who could've been exposed to measles. An 8-month-old baby traveling with his family from Israel has exposed possible hundreds of people in the Garden City area around April 3rd Officials say it's highly contagious although rare. Measles is a respriatory infection that can affect the brain and cause pneumonia. Symptoms include: Runny nose Cough Fever Watery eyes Red blotchy rash "We are most concerned for infants under the age of one because they are at a higher risk because they have not been immunized and because their immune system is not as strong as older children therefor they are more prone to complications," said Dr. Abby Greenburg with the Center of Health. Officials say the 8-month-old baby is being treated and is fine.

You're right...I probably shouldnt have used that term although it's an expression of mine that I always use...people who dont know me well wouldnt know that. I just think that is an important detail to know regarding this story.

of course you should still be worried...on the other thread, the first thing people said was this is what happens when people delay or dont vaccinate their children. I responded that we dont know the full story, who gave this to this child, etc.
I know the whole vaccination thing is a "hot" topic on here...but I think that people who chose to delay their vaccinations are constantly having to defend their reasoning and it is frustrating which is why I probably sounded defensive in my original post. I dont scold anyone for choosing to follow the recommended vaccination schedule therefore I dont expect someone to scold me or tell me I'm wrong when I chose not to follow the schedule.

I think people should still be concerned about those who choose not to vaccinate their child- because those who are not vaccinated are the ones at the most risk...

Regardless of whether or not this child was from here, Israel or Mars, the fact still remains that if you did not have your child vaccinated against this diseas and you were in the same place as that child was, then you have a reason to be very worried and will need to bring your child in to be checked out.

In this case, to me it really doesnt matter who had the measles and how they got it. All that matters to me is if MY children are protected
I know if I choose to delay the vacinne and then my child caught it from an incident like this I would feel responsible.

I agree. I think that's more the point, that kids whose parents who choose not to vaccinate or to delay them are at risk...and at risk from anyone else who didn't vaccinate, whether they're from the US or not...you don't know who's around you in public places, where they're from or have been, or what they've been exposed to.
I'm not stating my opinion either way here, just saying the way I read the posts.

Right-but if people delay/stop vaccinating, when the disease is introduced from a contaminated area (as in this case) it has more of a chance of thriving. The more people vaccinated, the less likely the disease can grab a hold on our society.
As for the other thread, I think people were more relieved that they had had their child vaccinated as opposed feeling this proves something about vaccinations overall. Most people who get their kid vaccinated do so to protect them from cases just like this. So, when it happens you feel thankful that you did it. We all need to make the best decision we can for our children-it's tough no matter what you do.

Absolutely! My point was that the child is only 8 months old so wouldnt have been vaccinated yet anyway. The child also wasn't from this country...I'm not sure what their vaccination requirements are, there are a few girls on here though that may know.
I should have just posted this on one of the other threads about this...I was just trying to show that the finger can't always immediately be pointed at those that delay vaccinations.

Unfortunately, vaccinated or not....MMR is not on a vaccination schedule until at least 12 months so many children would be suseptible to it anyway. My ped doesn't schedule MMR until 18 months so if we were there my DD would be at high risk.

I know that we all have different parenting practices and our views may differ, but one thing is very clear, we do what we do because we each feel that it is in the best interest of our children. I understand why you posted what you did and I just hope and pray that no one was contaminated (whether it be a child or adult) and if they are, that they may get the help that they need.

Very true. But my DS is 1 and wouldnt have been vaccinated yet anyway being they dont do it until 15 months.
And I say that I delay DS's shots but he has had his 1st round and some 2nds for all the required immunizations (except the rotovirus and chicken pox). Rather than giving DS 3-4 shots at a time, I do 1. So while he is behind, he will eventually catch up.

Why do you assume that the infant and family are from Isreal? Maybe they live in Nassau and were travelling back from a vacation in Israel.

I knew it would turn into this...
I have to agree that while yes the disease is more wide spread due to not getting vaccines.
those same vaccines have a higher chance of giving your child a severe febrile sezuire , a severe reaction, permenant deafness etc then of them ever getting the illness thats being vaccinated against.
So before anyone points fingers, just RELAX and say both are evil and go on with your day.

Eta - for those who want numbers...
The CDC reports last I saw, something like 1 in 3000 kids get a SEVERE reaction with lasting consequences to the MMR..
The chance of getting a disease is much less.
So , I do not feel that kids should NOT get vaccinated, but I weigh the RISKS and become INFORMED before I say or do anything. We all should.

Unfortunately, measles is not something I want to mess with anywhere or at any age- since my grandfather became completely deaf from it at 3 years old.
The scary part is that those who are unvaccinated (whether b.c they are too young, chose to delay or not vaccinate) are all in danger whenever they fly b.c you never know what people are your plane have been exposed to or are carrying.

But the MMR isn't given until 15-18 months, so babies younger than that would be at risk no matter what.
This happened at my day care in the baby room with a baby who went to FL on caught Chicken Pox on the plane and our baby room was infested as a result.

Well according to the CDC the range is 12-15 months - but some people chose to delay it to 15 months - 2 years

Re: So, I just want to point out a BIG thing regarding this measles "outbreak"....
I just wanted to say that my friends all went to a birthday party and one of the kids there came down with measles the following day and NONE of the other kids at the party, including the sibling at the party came down with any measles symptoms or anything.
I don't think its any reason to panic... But thats my opinion.
