So I took my son to get his blood test done and...
It was not a success. They just couldn't find a strong enough vein. They checked both his arms. At first DS said nothing while they kept tying his poor arms up looking for the veins. Then he started getting annoyed and started crying by the time they got the needle in he was hysterical!!! I couldn't calm him down. The best part is that we got nothing accomplished because the vein was too thin and not enough blood that they needed was coming out. So they said it was up to me if I wanted to try it again, maybe after he calms down. I just said i'd come back tomorrow. I'm sorry but even if he calmed down there is no way he would get over it. He'd flip out the minute we'd walk into the room. So I left and I called the doctor and explained to him what happened and I just flat out told him that I am not going to bring him back today or any other day and put him through that torture again. The doctor suggested that I try it again in a few months when he's 18 months...

Poor little guy. I didn't have any of these blood tests done and don't really see the need to yet.

I'm starting to think of not bringing him back again. Poor thing. It put him in a bad mood the rest of the morning. So we kept him outside and my Dad took him for a ride pushing him in his Buddy Quad and then I heard my son's happy screams so I knew he was fine then.
I felt so bad for him because they kept tying and untying his arms with the rubber thingy and it annoyed him and I don't blame him one bit...

try again at 18 months. his veins will be stronger then and they should be able to get it no problem.

poor matthew & mommy that must have been horrid to go through
My PED did a finger prick test on gianna at her 1 year for blood tests for hemoglobin & lead.
I wonder why they have to get it from the tiny little veins.

Ugggh! I know right! Why couldn't they just do it from his finger. This blood test was for the same thing you mentioned, for hemoglobin & lead.
My heart was breaking for him and I wanted to cry myself...

You should take him to at least have the lead test done, especially with all that talk of the contaminated toys lately!!
OP
My son had to get his blood drawn a lot a couple of years ago. They were testing and re-testing him for Factor VII deficiency (which it turns out he has). Anyway, one day we were just sitting there and he starts whining and saying "Mom, I really want my blood back that they took from me". The poor kid was traumatized from the whole experience.

Re: So I took my son to get his blood test done and...
I don't get why they couldn't get it, my son was getting blood taken from his arm at 3 months old and he was tiny and they never had to prick him more then 1.
I would bring him somewhere else.

Re: So I took my son to get his blood test done and...
I agree with above posters - with all the lead scares lately I would have it done.
I would go somewhere else
When he gets older he is going to be more aware of what is going on and I believe it will be harder to contain him

Andrew had the lead test months before his 1st birthday. It was not part of the routine 1yr tests.

Re: So I took my son to get his blood test done and...
Poor Matthew. I still have problems when I go for myself, so I can't imagine a little baby going through this
Maybe you can suggest they use a vein on the top of his hand? Is that possible? I know that they ALWAYS have a difficult time with me and now I tell them right off the bat to use a vein in my hand. Can they do that with kids? I don't see why not.

Re: So I took my son to get his blood test done and...
My DD had blood drawn from the back of her hands.. she cried very little. Don't think it hurt too much. When they drew blood from her arm.. now that's turned into a full out wailing and screaming session.

I'm gonna call the doctor later and just ask if they can draw the blood from anywhere other than his arm...

Re: So I took my son to get his blood test done and...
you can get it done in the finger. some labs dont do the finger like quest becuse they are trained to do arm. but they can get the same sampling fromthe finger. we were told to give olivia water before we went because it helps to plump up the veins. my girlfriend had problems iwth her sons veins showing so they shut off the light and used a flashlight under the arm. it allowsthe veins toglow. good luck.

Re: So I took my son to get his blood test done and...
Maybe the person drawing the blood was not as skilled. Maybe you should take him to a Phlebotomist to get his blood drawn. I know I cant compare myself to an toddler but I noticed a HUGE difference when my blood was drawn by a nurse or a medical aid then drawn by a Phlebotomist.

Re: So I took my son to get his blood test done and...
we had a very similar experience on Monday. luckily, they found a vein eventually, but it was an awful awful experience. DD didn't even like sitting on Daddy's lap while we held her arms- that sent her screaming!

They're probably programmed to do it from the arm. Here they were tying and untying my son's arm with that rubber thingy. I almost wanted to take it and shove it down their throat.
Just take the freekin' blood from his finger...Geez!

Oh I told my ped that I would go back tomorrow but my senses tell me that it will be the same as today and that I was absolutely not going to put my son through that torture again. So that's when he suggested I wait another few months until he's 18 months and try again...
