Re: So important. Please help. UPDATE ON ORIGINAL POST
I had my Genetic Counseling and my amnio at Madonna and I think is was Dr. Goldstein who did it. I loved him too. I will be going back for a fetal echocardiagram in a few weeks! I hope they continue to make you feel better.

Re: So important. Please help. UPDATE ON ORIGINAL POST

I know I am not a frequent poster, but i do read a lot. And now I need your girls' help. I am currently 20 weeks, 4 days. I had my Level 2 last night and found out that I am carrying a healthy baby girl. Then immediately afterwards I had my appointment with the Doctor. I explained to the doctor a "tightening" feeling that I have been having for a few weeks. (I actually rushed there last week, they brushed me off and gave me antibiotics for a UTI that I found out I never even had). Anyway, so tonight they hooked me up to a monitor and it turns out I was having LOTS of small contractions. Braxton Hicks. She called it an "Irritable Uterus." Anyway, to make a long story short, she was cold and terrified me and DH. She said things like, "Well the baby isn't viable at this point, and the medicine isn't known to help this early so it's sink or swim." I mean, it was awful. She was not comforting at all. So I want to switch doctors. I have not liked her from day 1 but this cemented my decision. She also said I should get a high risk consult, so I think this is my best chance to get better care. So my question is, can anyone recommend a high risk ob that specializes in this type of thing? (I guess pre-term labor or similar problems???) Preferrably one affiliated with North Shore??????
Update: We ended up trying to go to a doctor who was affiliated with North Shore who a friend recommended...Northern OB GYN, and they wouldn't see me today. We were totally freaked, so we made an appointment with the specialist out here in Suffolk that my original dr referred us to---Madonna Perinatal. And I am so glad that we did. We saw Dr. Jonathan Goldstein and he was wonderful. They did a full work-up and he said the most important thing is that the baby looks great, and my cervix looks great. He said if it were him he would treat it aggresively, so we said we wanted to do that. So apparently in 3 weeks (at 23 weeks) they can do a test called Fetal Fibro-Nectin? which is a swab test which tells them pretty definitively if you're going to go into labor in the next 2 weeks. So for the next three weeks (until I can have that test) I will be on modified bed rest, go back for weekly cervical "checks", and take a 3 day course (starting today) of a medication which calms uterine contractions. I loved him (so did DH) and he was comforting that he feels that everything is OK, but that we're being cautious. Thanks for all of the recommendations and thoughts!!!!
can i ask who your orginial dr. was (that told you there was no viable chance) you can FM me if you want...i ws sort of in the same situation my 20 wk was normal...then 2 weeks later i had heavy contraction on friday and the next day lost our baby boy either due to an infection or IC they dr. still get the results...i just wish they was something that htey couldve done...but when i gave birth to our son we had already passed....

I am happy you found someone better. Better now than at 8 months. Hang in there with the bed rest.

I just noticed this post was from a month ago? How have your follow up visits been going? Did you get the FFN test yet? I had an "irritable" uterus during my pregnancy and saw Dr. Goldstein too so feel free to FM!

Re: So important. Please help. UPDATE ON ORIGINAL POST
i started contracting very early in my pregnancy as well. it got really bad and landed me in the hospital at 25w4d, but looking back i was contracting WAY before then, even as early as 16-17 weeks. i was diagnosed with "irritable uterus" and told that it may or may not put me into premature labor.
my cervix never changed and my fetal fibronectin was never positive. i did have to go on modified bed rest from 29-36 weeks as a precaution, and i did get steroids to mature the baby's lungs at 29 weeks. i also took terbutaline and nifedipine for a LONG time. the terb helped quite a bit but the side effects (increased heart rate, shortness of breath) were nasty. nifedipine did absolutely nothing for me.
in the end my contractions ended up being just a nuisance, and that's the case for most women with irritable uterus. i gave birth to a healthy baby boy at 39 weeks 4 days.
fm me if you have any questions or need to talk!

I had a very similar experience to the above poster (although a little later). I, like you, was having contractions for a while and never even knew it. I ended up in the hospital at 35 weeks for 9 days. I had the shots to mature the lungs and some CRAZY Iv meds the whole time I was there (I was still contracting after 6 days of being there). At 36 weeks (they said it would be ok to give birth at that time) they sent me home (I was also 90% effaced and 1 cm dialted). I was on bedrest (although I was kind of bad about it) and gave birth to a healthy boy at 39.5 weeks. I would definately listen to what they say about bedrest!!

I am glad to hear you had a good experience with the referral doctor. It is unconscienable that a doctor cannot offer support (in addition to the obvious cold medical facts). You will be in my thoughts!
