They always know....
My MIL was here sometime in January of 07. I forget how far a long I was at the time but we were waiting until 12 weeks. (which I guess she figured) When DH called her after our Ultrascreen to tell her I was pregnant she said "Oh yeah I know...and I guess that means she's due on 9/14" She'd been counting the weeks in between or something and knew that he'd tell her at 12 weeks...

They do always know. At 5 and a half weeks, I took my Mom for a doc appointment and I couldnt stop smiling. Mind you taking Mom to the doc was NEVER joyous. So she looked at me and said "Are you pregnant?" I said "Do I LOOK pregnant?" and then she moved on to the next topic.
We hadn't told her about the miscarriages until after the second one. She was too fragile to worry until we had some sort of idea and game plan so I understand the need for discretion - even with a parent.
