Yesterday was so far the worst day of being a mom
I guess I will start at the beginning. Thursday night Luka went to bed with a slight fever (100.3) and woke up Friday with 101.2 so I gave him some tylenol but as the day progressed he started to sound more congested in his chest. He wasnt coughing alot, just hear and their and it sounded phelmy. I didn't think it was necessary to take him to the dr. and figured it was his frist real bad cold. Well as the day went on his temp went up to 102.5 that night and he sounded worse to me on Saturday. DH and I decided to take him to the dr. and when we got their his temp was up to 103.5 and was miserable and all he wanted was me. She checked him out and his lungs and ears were fine, his throat was a little red but she said it could have been from him whining. She said that since he has never had a temp that high and is always in good spirits it could be a UTI because their was nothing visial and sometimes boys under 1 develope them especially if they aren't circumcized so she wanted to do a urine culture but the labs were closed and she wanted us to go to LIJ for the test. DH didnt think it was necessary but I felt that the dr. had a point on not giving him meds if it wasnt necessary so off we went. We get to LIJ and he has a temp now of 104 and the take him and check him they also see nothing visialble wrong and his lungs are clear from the x-ray. They said they need to insert a cathierer (spelling) to do the culture. Dh was getting mad because he felt like it wasn't necessary and I was holding Luka down hysertical crying. The resident tired to insert it and he got it in but then DS kicked it out so 15 minutes they said they have to do it again that a bag over his penis might give us a false positive since he isnt circumcized. The second time was torture of me. The nurse was in the old school practice and gentally forced his forskin all the way and then they inserted it again, taped it and kept it in for an hour and half and he didnt produce any urine. Finally another dr. came buy and said to take it out that it is probably viral and she heard him cough and said it might be Croup. I also asked if she thought it was necessary to put him through all this and she said if it was her son she would have stayed home. So now I feel like a terrible mother because I had to put my son through all that discomfort for nothing. DH is so mad at the ped because he feels like this wasn't necessary and today he doesnt have a temp just congested. Last night all I could think about is if he is traumatized and hurt and was wondering were my motherly instincts went. So DH wants to find a new dr. now and I question everything I do for him now. So that was my horrible day.
Would you switch dr.'s?
Forgot to add that this morning his temp went down to 99.2 and just seems congested. He is in better spirts today and is starting to eat more and only woke up 2 times last night. When I spoke to the dr. today she said it is probably a virus and but she still wants to rule out UTI and she will give me a bag but I told her he isnt getting another cathier.

I am so sorry. How horrible for Luka!! You need to feel confident in your Dr., if you don't then you may want to look around. I hope Luka feels better.

Re: Yesterday was so far the worst day of being a mom
oh I'm so sorry his first illness had to be that scary. Makes me feel bad complaining about these few colds Ellie has had this season. Try not to beat yourself up about the trauma. They're too young to remember any of what's done to them. It's definitely harder on you than on him. I can't tell you what to do about the Dr, that depends on how you feel. I don't honestly know what I'd do in that situation. I think we all have at least one instance where we end up questioning something they tell us to do. What did they decide that it is? Was it croup? Did it just get better on its own? s to you and Luka. Hope he's better soon.

Re: Yesterday was so far the worst day of being a mom
I am so soory that happened...you were doing what was advised
My ped also told us that if we don't circumsize and he runs a fever we have to do all different tests..I wou;d have gone along with it too, you just don't know..
for future ref though, did the nurse have to pull him back to get it in?
My DH would be mad as well. But honestly, I would have done what you did.
Is it a practice? can you switch for now to a different one in the practice?

Re: Yesterday was so far the worst day of being a mom
I think the Dr. was just being overly cautious. If you don;t feel comfortable with him you should find a new Dr.
Don't feel like a terrible mother- you did what you felt was right and I PROMISE you did not traumatize him. He will never remember.

Re: Yesterday was so far the worst day of being a mom
I think we've all had our moments of feeling like we have no idea what we're doing and why on earth would God trust us with this angel!!! But....don't be so hard on yourself. If my Ped told me to take my child in to the ER, I would've also. If you hadn't and something had happened, you would've been beating yourself up worse than this.
As far as your cutie being traumatized...I doubt it. I mean no man ever remembers being circumcized and that's surgery! I have zero memories prior to around 3 years old and I had measels and mumps as an infant. I'm sure he won't even remember anything by today.
I don't know if I would change Ped's immediately. maybe call a few and get a second opinion to see what they would've done. I don't know that I would mind them erring on the side of caution. I think I'd rather that than them being aloof about my child. kwim?
i hope this helps and remember....you're doing the best that you can and that's all anyone can expect from you!!!
eta: 's to Luka. Feel better sweetie!!!!

The nurse did pull back his forskin and I always red not to for the first year and when the attending came back to take a look she manually put it back and said not to and told her with the nurse their that I didnt think I was suppose to but the nurse did and she said that I am completely right.
It is a solo practice and she is such a nice woman although sometimes I get a different answer than what she gave my SIL. Her practice wasnt open yesterday and after going to 4 hospitals to do her rounds she opened up for me so I feel like she truely cares but my DH is so particular. This is the second time I switched, the first time DH just didnt like her just because and I didnt feel comfortable. DH holds grudges and I think in his eyes no doctor will ever be good enough
Thank you for all your well wishes, I really appreciated them.

Ok, first of all, no one should EVER retract an intact boy's penis. Even to insert the catheter, they could have put it in without retracting. Has your doctor been retracting at all? If a boy if forcibly retracting it can cause a host of problems, includings UTIs. If you or anyone else has been retracting (any manipulation of the foreskin is retraction), make sure it stops immediately! His foreskin will probably be bright red for a day or so, but it will be ok soon.
Secondly, I agree with your DH. I think your doctor jumped to the UTI way too quick. Uncircumcised boys have only a 1% greater chance of having a UTI during the first year than circumcised boys. If she wasn't crying while urinating I'm not sure why your doctor would jump to that, especially if he sounded phlegmy. After a situation like that, I would feel like switching doctors, because I wouldn't feel like I could trust them again.

So sorry for you sweetie and Luka... Dont question your motherly instincts, they are always correct even if you dont believe it at the time. I would find another Dr only if you are really questioning this one. She may just be overly cautious like someone else said which isnt such a bad thing.. good luck!

I said this in another post, but there is no need at all to retract to insert a cath. They can put it in and fish it around to insert it. Don't let them retract it, and if they tell you they have to its not true.

I actually would have done what you did too.
I actually prefer a doctor who is over cautious then laid back. I switched doctors for that exact reason.
As a child i had symptoms that were brushed off for a year before they found that something was seriously wrong.

You did what you thought was best. Nothing wrong with that. Don't worry Luka will not be tramatized. (My brother had to be circumsised at the age of 2. He had no clue about it until it was brought up MANY years later.)
Here are some hugs for you & Luka!!!

When they went to do it the first time they didnt retract it, when they did it the second time is when they retracted it and I said I wanted a doctor to do it and the residents answer was "I am a doctor" I guess I should have said a doctor who did this before. I dont think he did them before in an uncircumsised boy.
