So my Ped says that I am overfeeding my baby.

My DS is 6 weeks old & is 11.5 lbs.

During the day (7:30am - 9pm) he eats every 2 - 2.5 hours and has about 4.5 ounces.. I have given him up to 5 on occaion if he was begging for it but not on a daily basis.

During the night (9pm - 7am) he has a 4.5 - 4.75 ounce bottle at 9-9:30 & then sleeps til 3:30-4am & then will have a 4 ounce bottle. Then at 7am will have another 4.5 ounce bottle.

I've tried spacing the day feedings closer to 2.5 hours apart rather than 2 hours but it's hard when he is begging/ screaming for food.

He has been eating like this for over 2 weeks now.

Re: So my Ped says that I am overfeeding my baby.

Do you use a pacifier? Sometimes they just want something to suck on.

I always try the pacifier first before feeding his
m if he starts to give me his "feed me" motions & he usually just spits it out.

I think he likes the bottle nipples b/c they are larger than the pacifier nipples. He could just want to suck but he won't take the pacifier. I should search & see if there are pacifiers with larger nipples.

Is he spitting up? He could be going through a growth spurt. If nothing else comforts him then I would feed him Chat Icon

He is spitting up a little. No projectile vomitting or anything. I know, I feel bad denying him food if he is truly hungry.

I don't agree with your ped and neither did my ped.

Ours confirmed that you can't overfeed a newborn that at that age they eat because they are hungry and not because of taste/etc. Also, if he over eats, the worst that will happen is that he will spit up whereas if you underfeed the results are much worse.

Just my two cents.

Thank you. I felt like I was doing DS harm by the way they acted at the Dr office.

That's what my ped said as well - and he also reinforced that some babies need to eat more than others.

My ped said to feed DD when she wants to eat. She is 4 1/2 weeks old. She said you can't over feed now, that she'll eat when she is hungry. And just to make sure she takes rests in between and to make sure she burps. HTH

I agree with the other posters. I don't think you are overfeeding him. My DD was ALWAYS hungry at the beginning. Now she is a very healthy, normal weight 7 month old.Chat Icon

There are, DD only like the larger nipple pacifier, they're actually called BINKY from playtex, they aren't bent, it's the only ones that DD would take...

DD was eating like that at around 6 weeks, she was a chub, but my ped said that at that point if they're overeating they'll be spitting up, and if she's not she's obviously hungry and can handle it.Chat Icon

your ped shouldnt say such a thing b/c that isn't true. My DS was about that size at that age and our ped was thrilled at his growth. At 9 weeks my DS was 14lbs! He is 11 weeks now.

my son was born big at 9lbs and at his 1month amount was 11lbs something oz. my dr didnt say i was over feeding him. i always feed on cue. my son at 6 months was 21lbs 13oz and 29inches i thought he was too big my dr said he was proportionate and not to worry.

each dr is different ask for a second opinion.

Re: So my Ped says that I am overfeeding my baby.

My son gained 3 pounds per month for the first 3 months!
He was 7 pounds at birth.

My DH was concerned about him eating too much as well, and still to this day (although DS doesn't eat as much) our ped has not once voiced a concern.

He was drinking a ton as an infant and our ped says that they will stop when they are full......it's almost impossible to overfeed an infant....so I went with that!

And I loved my little porker!!!!!! Chubby babies kill me...Chat Icon

I overfed my son in the beginning too. I was misreading his crying for hunger. It was actually sleep he was looking for.

Not sure if this is the same situation but The Baby Whisperer helped me tremendously.

Your ped is a boob. Babies this age cannot overeat. If he's not spiting it up then he wants/needs it. You are doing a great job! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: So my Ped says that I am overfeeding my baby.

I have a few pacis with giant nipples- the brand was nuby. DS didn't like them b/c they were too big. I got them at BBB.
