So, should we start a support group for all those being laid off or what?
More and more I'm hearing this.. this week alone, I 've been alerted to 10 people being laid off.. and one is including myself.

Yes, I know several and several whose jobs are day to day at this point
BTW: None are in finance but all are indirectly affected by the mess that was created

I teach a college Economics class in a high school, the professor I work with said...
"Worst numbers he's seen in his entire career" (over 30 years with a PhD in economics).
His prediction:
Best case scenario: "Will get worse than it is now and then should get better next summer"
Worse case scenario: "Will get worse than it is now and be bad for about three years"
What is happening (when you really sit down and look at the numbers) is truly THE WORST economic mess this country has been in this century... I'm sorry to say it but I am just shocked at the numbers and how this "shell game" that was played really permeated and falsely inflated or held up many sectors of our economy.
Honestly, I was speechless when we went over the figures, graphs, projections.
This country is mortgaged for at least the next three generations

It is sad and it's not over.
I have a friend that works for a very large, popular corporation on LI (and in other locations too) and she was in meetings all day discussing layoffs. They are going to be laying off thousands of people.

Well, technically there is an exact definition of a recession and the numbers have to be there in order to use the term.
That being said, with a lame duck president and the opposing party's nominee in the lead at the polls, the party currently in the White House (with a democratic dominated Congress) REALLY doesn't want the term being used for it fill only further hurt their nominee.
The above is not about either particular candidate per se, just the way politics works.

So what do we do? Those that are being laid off and that have been laid off? Are there even going to be jobs out there that are hiring? It seems like the only field kinda safe is the healthcare field.

So far, every day this week, I have received an e-mail alert from at least one or more major US companies about lay-off. Every one was in the thousands.
I received three today, totaling over 15,000 jobs... again, that's today alone.
I keep warning people, now is NOT the time to ask for anything at work... get there on time, work like a dog, stay a bit late... tow the line.... don't ask for time off... nothing. Employers are looking for reasons to lay off employer A vs. B... don't make the decision easier for them.

Yes, it is.
We meet the criteria on paper but days away from an election the media is under pressure not to say the "R" word.

Re: So, should we start a support group for all those being laid off or what?
DH just had a conversation with his boss today. He was told that in the short term (IE from now until Dec 31) he is safe, but in the long term nobody in the company is.
When DH told me this he followed it up with . . . this is why I should have started looking for a new job 4 months ago.
I still feel now the way I did then . . . when layoffs start if he is with a company for only 4 months instead of 4 years he is more at risk of being let go and that NOW is not the time to give up the job he has.
